Intel Mac :: ATI Radeon 2600 XT Upgrade To New/faster?

Feb 25, 2012

I wish to get a more powerful graphics card for my 2008 24" iMac.  My card is an ATI Radeon 2600 XT.  It is supposedly (according to photos and YouTube videos) a small square chip board, screwed to the underside of the logic board, with a large cooling assembly (fan box with long copper tubing going to the square chip board) which also is screwed onto the GC board, the cooling system being removeable. The chip board is small and surely must carry a 'type' name, as like PCS, etc, but I havent found a name.  Could it be CDB? At any rate, I need a modern card that can run the newest OpenGL systems.  Does anyone make a card that will fit and replace the 2600 XT?  How does one search for a retro fit upgrade card?

IMac :: Won't Upgrade Graphics Card ATI Radeon 2600 Pro To Geforce 8800 GT

Nov 14, 2008

I purchased my Mac a few weeks ago, wanting to both upgrade my computer.......and play Diablo 3. I do always want the best out of my systems and the person who sold me the mac told me it would be fairly easy to upgrade the card...well he was wrong. He also told me a few days later not to worry about upgrading since the system is already great.

I went to a local Mac store and asked about the upgrade and found out it would be close to or above a grand for the part from Apple and the labor.

Heres the breakdown:

$875 - Card
$130 - Labor
$15 - Shipping (from apple)

Are there any other ways to find this part online cheaper and just hopefully pay for the labor?

I just really dont want to pay a grand just to upgrade my damn video card, and I know within the new year Apple will release a much better fast computer and I'll be mad. I really wish it wasn't such a hard upgrade.

Mac Pro :: Won't Work With ATI Radeon 2600 XT Fan Noise

Sep 29, 2008

I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:

Mac OS X Update 10.5.5
Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0
Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2
iTunes 8.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2
QuickTime 7.5.5
Remote Desktop Client Update 3.2.2
Front Row Update

All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until Sunday afternoon. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A reset of the SMC has been done and a diagnostic as been run (no problems found). Is anybody else experiencing this? If it helps anyone, I've also posted my temps below:

Ambient Air 24.0C
CPU A Temperature Diode 34.0C
CPU B Temperature Diode 35.0C
CPU C Temperature Diode 35.0C
CPU D Temperature Diode 35.0C
CPU A Heatsink 32.0C
CPU B Heatsink 32.0C
Hard Drive Bay 1 28.0C
Hard Drive Bay 2 26.0C
Hard Drive Bay 3 27.0C

Memory Bank A Point 2 33.0C
Memory Bank A Point 3 34.0C
Memory Bank B Point 1 35.0C
Memory Bank B Point 2 37.0C
Memory Bank B Point 3 35.0C
Memory Module A1 48.0C
Memory Module B1 48.0C
Northbridge Heat Sink 38.0C
Expansion Slots 35.0C
Power Supply Location 1 46.0C
Power Supply Location 2 40.0C

Also, I did some reading and it seems that this issue has happened to others after they appllied the 2600 XT update from Apple. The update put their firmware at version .252. This is the version that is already installed on my card.

What I don't understand is that why for two days the fan never ran at full speed. It just suddenly started happening Sunday afternoon while I was burning some data to a DVD - the fan hasn't slowed down since.

Mac Pro :: Won't Work With Display 2008 W / Radeon 2600

Jul 10, 2009

I have been having an issue with my display lately and think it might be because of my graphics card. The display shows a "tail" of whatever is on the screen. So if you are looking at an edge of a window, that window edge will trail off to the side, creating a sort of ghost image. So I tried disconnecting the monitor and I plugged it into the other slot. That seemed to fix the the "Tail" temporarily. But, it made certain portions of the screen blurry. There are literally blurry patches. So I tried switching the connection again, and it just moved the blurriness.

Also, this is my second ATI Radeon HD 2600! Could it be a graphics card issue and if so, should I switch to the Nvidia option?

I have been having this reoccurring issue on just one of my screens. My right screen/main screen on my Mac Pro 2.8GHz seems to go dark on me, only in a few programs though. Safari and Lightroom mainly as those are the ones I use mostly on that screen.

It seems to happen once in a while, when it has been running a good bit which is why I thought it was the video card, too hot or something.

Mac Pro :: Won't Make GeForce 8800GT And Radeon HD 2600 XT Coexist In Same Machine

Dec 3, 2008

I've been digging up info and found a few sundry scraps, but any insightful personal experiences would be HIGHLY welcome. I'm getting an 8800GT upgrade for my Mac Pro. Since I'm considering driving more than 2 monitors, I'm considering adding it to the existing HD 2600 XT, instead of replacing the previous graphics card.

Any caveats I need to be aware of? Can I simply install the 8800GT on the 2nd-bottom slot above the HD 2600 XT? (It'll take up 2 slots, right?) Will this perform alright under Mac OS X and Windows Vista? Any power issues I should be aware of... or is it better to avoid the hassle and remove the HD 2600 XT, replacing it with the 8800GT?

MacBook :: Unrarring - Faster HD - RAM Upgrade ?

May 18, 2009

I have a stock Macbook alu 2.4GHz with 250GB (5400rpm) HD and 2GB RAM. I have absolutely no problem with the machine whatsoever, except for when the machine is busy unpacking large/many (say 1GB or more) files with UnrarX. While UnrarX is performing its job, if I try to use any other applications they usually run quite slow which annoys me slightly.

My knowledge of computers in general is quite limited, so my question to macrumors forums is: is there any way to fix this? Adding more RAM, putting in a faster HD, allocating less resources to UnrarX, or something else?

Software :: Parallels 6 To Run 40% Faster/launch Windows 2x Faster Than Fusion

Sep 8, 2010

Parallels is expected to announce as early as Thursday the sixth major upgrade to its Windows virtualization software for Mac OS X, delivering a significant performance boost over its predecessor, as well as 80 other new features.

The new Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac has been shown on average to run 40 percent faster than last year's edition, according to people familiar with the matter. Those same people said that the upgrade -- expected to retail for the same $79.99 price as its predecessor -- will also feature Windows boot times that are roughly two times faster than version 3.1 of its primary competitor: VMWare Fusion.

VMware and Parallels have gone head to head in the virtualization market since 2008, when the Fusion product was first introduced. Parallels has existed since 2006, and both products retail for an identical prices. In a recent study, Parallels 5 was already found to be 30 percent faster on average than VMware Fusion 3.

Parallels 6 is also expected to showcase tighter integration with its users' natural environment, adopting support for the Mac OS X's keyboard shortcuts, Spotlight search engine, and Expose windows management features. Similarly, the upgrade will offer the option to automatically apply a Mac's parental controls to their corresponding Windows applications, according to those familiar with the product.

Another major focus for Parallels is said to be gaming. Version 6.0 will reportedly deliver up to two-fold performance improvements while adding support for Dolby 5.1 surround sound and better handling of 3G environments.

Parallels 6 will sport compatibility with an enhanced Parallels Mobile application that will offer users the option of remotely accessing their virtual machines on an iPad, as well as an iPhone or iPod touch.

Parallels Transporter, previously a standalone application that allowed users to migrate a virtual PC image to the Mac, will come built into the new release as well.

Earlier this week, Parallels Desktop 6 was spotted on the shelves of a Fry's Electronics store in California. The product has not yet been formally announced.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

Mac Pro :: How To Know About Noisy ATI 2600?

Oct 16, 2008

I just bought a refurb MP (sig) with the standard ATI card, but it's ... the loudest part of my system (even with 4 HD's).

With nothing going on, the fan spins up, slows down, spins up, slows down, like it's pulsating. Is that normal?

Also, the 2nd Dell 2005FPW that I bought won't work via DVI with it, and I can't tell if it's the card or the monitor.

The monitor works fine with the VGA and the adapter, so I'm leaning more towards the DVI output on the monitor. But with the annoying fan, I'm not so sure.

Mac Pro :: 2600 XT Crossfire And Overclocked?

Mar 8, 2008

So because apple has done almost nothing about the 8800 GT being available for 'older' mac pro owners and almost nothing to live up to its claims that mac pros would be easily expandable, ive been thinking about alternatives a graphic card upgrade.

Currently I have 2 Geforce 7300 GTs, bridged with an ASUS Flex bridge, and overclocked. I get about 50-100 fps constantly in Counter Strike Source, and about 120-170 fps in UT 2004, both at resolutions of 1280x1024, 4X FSAA and maximum detail.

I'm becoming very tired of my small 19" LCD as im a graphic designer and am in the process of buying a 24" LCD which woud give me 19200x1200 resolution. This of course, would kill my geforce setup and drop my frame rates significantly.

Now, I've been thinking of upgrading but am not sure which video cards I should get...1900 XT or 2 X 2600 XT and overclocking them. Is the dual 2600 XT even an option? Can they be crossfired? Overclocked?

I've been playing half life 2 and am ready to move to half life 2 episode 2, but im fairly certain my video cards wont handle the game at the same settings i currently have. Of course, there are other games i would want to play but my limitations dont allow it, more importantly, at 1920x1200 resolutions after the monitor upgrade.
