I have previously saved Photoshop and Freehand files from my old G5 onto an external HDD. When I recently tried to review this data on my Mac pro it is showing up as EXEC files, whichseem to be unreadable? I am a little confused as to why this has happened and would like to know is there a way to retrieve these files so I can attempt to save them in their correct format?

I have saved about 300 photos on CD from a Windows Vista PC in PSD and JPEG formats. When I tried to insert the CD to my Macbook it says that it is not readable. Is there any way I can get the files to work on my Mac Photoshop or any other programme on Mac?

Entire email folders of mine seem to have lost all the content in them - all that remains is the heading detail on the individual emails.
It happens without much consistency -Sometimes I will use the folder, move messages to it and they will be fine, as normal,Then later on I will discover that ALL of the messages in this folder will seemingly have lost their data and gone blank.It makes no difference whether viewing in the mac mail pane or opening the message up directly.It wont happen to all folders or all subfolders
Is there a safe way of getting the messages back and preventing it happening any more?
I say 'safe' as reading through other similar threads years ago I saw suggestions about rebuilding mail boxes which others then mentioned that it completely wiped their entire mail boxes - the thought of that fills me with fear.
Im running an 2.8 Ghz i5 27" Desktop on Yosemite 10.10.1 - but it has been happening since Mountain Lion at least - Ive had this issue a few times but it seemed to be very limited and isolated, but in the last 6 months Ive noticed it happening to entire folders and I cannot let my records just evaporate like this!

The external HDD is a 320GB 2.5" Samsung. Using my MacBook Pro, I formatted it to have a 250GB partition for TimeMachine, with two other partitions for Windows computers as I was traveling without my MacBook and needed to backup photos. I used the HDD successfully for 3 months with no problems. But when I returned and tried to put everything on my Mac, Disk Utility told me I needed to verify and repair the disk. As it wouldn't mount, I performed the tasks that DU suggested, but now I am stuck with four partitions(?) which are not readable. And now DU does not give me any options.

I suspect there were plenty of Windows viruses (as I had to use many PCs over the 3 months), but the last time I used the drive successfully, it was on a PC and I successfully transferred items onto it. Please could you advise on actions or further diagnostics I should do. Luckily I bought a 16GB flash drive to make a 2nd backup of photos, but there still important documents which I need to recover off the HDD.
Is there a way to increase the size of the displayed mail, as you are creating it? I have mine set to 12 point text, but it is still difficult to read. The e-mail when received is fine, it's the creating that's "tiny"?

This is a strange one... I have a Powermac G4 running tiger.. now i needed to make a clean install of tiger and start again, which i did with absolutly no problems. I plugged my NTFS formatted HHD to the mac and it came up strait away. brilliant...Then i went though software update and installed the nessasarys and restarted the machine and this is when the problems started... computer turns on and instantly tells me that the device is not supported.. bugger.. i tryed everything to get it going but nope it wasnt having it. I made another fresh install of tiger, got everything going and the HDD showed up, made the updates and HHD wont read again....

Ok so i been using a pny 4gb thumb drive and i used it earlier htis morning perfectly fine. i gave it to a teacher to upload work. and got it back and now its giving me a disk isnt readable on this computer. i tried goin to disk utility but its all greyed out. and ALOT of my work is on there.

Today I get home and she meets me in the driveway telling me that her HD fell of her filing cabinet and the computer won't recognize it. I am hesitant to click the (Initialize) button for fear of an accidental formatting which would subsequently erase our iPhoto library (ALL OF OUR PHOTOS -> 90GB of photos). Because Mac enthusiasts are the ultimate community and are very resourceful on the whole, I felt it would be most prudent to put this query to the monitors of these boards.
So I have several external Harddisk that I formatted with NTFS-3G via the Disk Utility App on my Mac. I worked with the HDDs for weeks on my Mac without a problem. And now I brought the Harddisks to a friend and none of them can be read by Windows XP?!
We tried on several Machines, none seem to be able to read the NTFS-3G formatted HDDs. They're also not broken since they still work the second I plug them back into my MacBook.
So did I do something wrong? I also can't find a NTFS-3G driver for Windows.
It would kinda defeat the purpose that Windows can't read NTFS-3G...
I've suddenly come across a problem, which I'm not sure I understand at all... My Macbook Pro has stopped being able to read PC burnt data CDs. CDs that have previously worked. I get the "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer" error. They work in my old PC laptop, BUT, I booted up in Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro and it only saw the CD as a blank CD, so I'm guessing it's not an OS problem.
Just to make things even more clear, PC burnt audio CDs STILL work, and Mac burnt data/audio CDs still work. So it also doesn't seem to be a problem with the optical drive itself.
I installed a hard drive to a new Mac Pro, the physical install went fine. When I booted the computer, it said the drive was not readable or usable or something along that lines so I went to disk utility and erased the hard drive with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) setting selected. Now the drive seems to work fine but I haven't tested it much. Is everything ok with this drive now? Is Journaled the best setting? Is there a better setting to use for video editing. The drive is: WD Caviar GP 500 GB SATA

When I open disk utility, it looks like the attached. I can't "Repair" it, can't erase it, nothing.
I want to completely reinstall my SL onto my MBP just to have a fresh start and 0 out my hard drive. I've already backed up all my important files and everything I need, but when I put in my SL disc it tries to read it and then just kicks it out of the drive without ever showing up on my laptop. It is not the disc I used when I upgraded my MBP from 10.5 to 10.6 though because I misplaced and cannot find that copy, but I am using a friends copy (I don't think this is the problem). I know my drive should read it because it reads every other CD I put into it and it shows up on my friends MacBook as well.

I have an external drive that will need to be connected at different times to both my Mac (Leopard) and my Windows XP & Vista machines. I had it formatted for Mac OS (Journaled) but it wasn't readable in XP or Windows. So what is the best format so that all can read/write to it normally? NTFS? It needs to be able to handle larger files (4GB and bigger).

I partitioned it to Mac os extended (journaled)- for time machine and FAT for windows and mac file transfer and storage. I used disk utility to partition the drive. These two drives are detected in my mac, however when I plug in the external drive into my windows- no pop up appears telling me to open files. So I go into my computer and click on the (F) drive in my case. Windows vista then proceeds to tell me the drive must be formatted before it can be used. What problem do I have. All I want is 2 partitions one for time machine and another that will allow for data transfer and storage. I have looked but cannot seem to find and answer. I have a 160 gb hard drive, what amount of space do you recommend for the time machine partition.

I'm using Leopard and a 500gb Imac [I don't know if this makes much of a difference? I was using a 4gb Kingston usb stick to move files from my old pc to the new Imac and made the mistake of not ejecting properly since then every time I insert I get "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I've googled and googled trying to find some way to fix it and so far nothing.
It does appear in disk utilities as "generic flash 2.0 media" and i have tried to reformat it, I erased as MS - DOS and then even tried to partition I've tried Master boot record & guid partition table both under MS -DOS [I really need to be able to use on windows as well as mac] underneath it continually says Unformatted beside partition map scheme. I've also tried to reformat using windows in the hope it might bring it back to life, again nothing - so I'm beginning to wonder have I just got a dud memory stick? I have a Kingston 1gb stick and when its inserted it appears as "Kingston" under disk utilities.

I have a Seagate HD attached to my computer that was working fine with my old iMac, but when I just upgraded to a new iMac Version 10.7.4, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, it seems to be doing something srewy. I use that disk for my "Backup" files. Since I have switched it to the new computer, the backups continue to fail. I have a Macbook Pro with an External 2TB My Book for Mac Hard drive. I used it earlier this week, ejected and disconnected it, went to sleep and then tried to use it the next day and the error message: "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." popped up. I have checked partitions, firmware, etc. and all are showing that it is there. It no longer shows up in Finder, though DiskUtility does show it, though it doesn't show any of the partitions, etc. it doesn't even have the name of what I called it.
- I am trying to get access to my files, I NEED them, (don't we all?!?) But seriously, these have hundreds of photos and videos of my college seminary on them and we need them for our 10- year anniversary.
