Mac Pro :: Can't Reset The SMC
Jun 25, 2012
2008 Mac Pro 2,1 10.7.4 Last week I upgraded my video card to a ATI Radeon 5770 to get better performace in Photoshop. This card was recommended for my machine by OWC. It came in a box with an Apple logo on it When I slid the card in I accidently knocked a heat sink that is right behind where this card goes. It fell off. Took the computer to an Apple center and they told me this was a crucial piece and that I needed to replace my whole logic board. So I got a new logic board. Â
Now the computer works fine, and video works fine, but on booting my HD / Expansion fan runs at about 2700rpm all the time. The Exhaust fan runs at 1500rpm all the time. According to iStat all my internal temps are fine. This fan problem is new. So I try to reset my SMC. The last step says "plug the computer back in, wait 5 seconds and then press the power button." However, as soon as I plug in the power cable my computer starts up, so I'm not sure I'm really completing the SMC reset process.Â
I've tried another power cable with the same results. I've tried plugging the cable into another power strip / outlet with the same result. I've tried booting with the SMC disabled (hold "d" on boot) and the fans run significantly faster than they do now, which leads me to believe that resetting my SMC would be helpful.Â

Recently I bought a new Mac and I'd like to gift my old Macbook Pro (running MacOS 10.7.4) to my wife, so she can renew her old Macbook (white, Core2 Duo generation, running MacOS 10.6.8).Â
The data and apps migration from my old Macbook Pro to the new one was smooth and faultless. But migrating data and apps from my wife's computer to my old Macbook Pro didn't. All the apps were transfered but not the data (no big deal) nor the Mail (the Apple's mail app) account.Â
As I didn't sign out the old Macbook Pro from iCloud or Mail, I guess there was a conflict when receiving the new data from my wife's computer. Obviously, I want to keep the old Macbook Pro along with MacOS 10.7.4, so I would't restore it.Â

everytime i shut down the computer it resets everything. takes off all the music i added in itunes ( still has firefox that i added in the finder though but i had to re-install it). i'm thinking the person who sold it to me did something to clean the machine when it was sold.
this is probably something easy but i'm not too computer savvy.

After having this Mac for a month, I've been surprised for the past few days to find that after an hour to three hours of use, the computer might freeze and then state that it must reset. Is this the result of any certain common activity in Mac OS that I could avoid just by changing my usage habits?

I bought a macbook 3yrs ago and I let my brother use it and he locked it and I dont know what to do.
I tried to put the osx cd in and press c or option on startup and all I get is a lock asking for a password. On normal logon it asks for user name and password. He remembers the user but not the password. Is there any way to reset it completely?
He deleted my user and saved my files on his side.
I want my pictures and things but I dont have to have them

I just recently got an iBook G3. I found it in my towns recycling center and brought it home. The user on it does not have admin privileges. Seeing how it's old and is running 10.2 I was just going to install some sort of Linux on it. I went to go boot into a CD and it came up with a grey screen with a password prompt? I don't have the password. Does the same thing if I try to boot into single user mode.

I was thinking that once I saw a guy who said something about an application that reset the RAM while you are using the computer. That means that you can reset the RAM without restarting your computer.

holding down the command +s key when we hear the tone of imac at the startup and then insert some command line.
The issue with me is that i tried it in mnay ways but i cant get to the terminaleverytime at the startup i use apple+s key ,nothing happens ,it loads normally and gets to the login screen, keys seems to be fine what can be the issue and is it there any way to get to the terminal w/o having cd etc.

My friend bought a 13" MBP (April 2010) from someone at a cheaper price, but that person didn't provide the original installation disks. I have a Snow Leopard Disc which I bought for $50 as an upgrade from Leopard. Any chance that can be used to reset the password?

I am running Mac OS Lion (10.7.3) on a 8-core Mac Pro. As I turned on my mac this morning, I found out that I was unable to use my wireless mouse, and also that I couldn't open my bluetooth settings. Apparently, the entire module disappeared from the System Preferences, and when I went to one of the articles on here, I saw that I'm supposed to reset my PRAM and SMC in order to make my bluetooth work again. The problem is, that I don't know what PRAM or SMC are, nor do I know how to reset them.

When i turned it on the Word was in spanish but everything else in English, and whoever had this laptop before me still has it registered to them (I'm guessing). I need to know how to reset it.
