What do you need if you want to program CUDA on a Mac Pro?

Presumably only the Nvidia GPUs are supported?

OS X :: Where To Start With Programming

Aug 14, 2009

I want to learn programming, from scratch, I have no knowledge of programming itself but am very competent with a computer. I have a MacBook running Leopard and boot camp with XP. I can learn fast and eventually want to go on to write apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch platform and maybe even games. What programming language should I learn to start with? Preferably not the one that is the easiest to learn but the one that is the most useful.

Applications :: C++ Programming Using Xcode?

Aug 3, 2004

have knowledge of C and want to start learning C++. Traditionally, I am a Windows Programmer, but want to start coding apps for Mac OS X. What is the best approach to programming using C++ on OS X?From what I gather only carbon can be used with C++ - but carbon is designed for backward compatability with OS 9/8/etc - but I am not interested in this. Cocoa is OS X only (which I like), but requires objective C. However, I would rather learn C++, as this is widely used in the Windows world, so I believe that C++ would be more useful to learn than Obj-C. Would it be possible for anyone to confirm whether it would be possible to program Cocoa using C++?Also, does anyone know of any good Mac Development websites that have good step by step tutorials to programming in C++ using Xcode?

Mac Pro :: Looking To Downgrade From GTX 285 To ATI 5770

Nov 8, 2010

I am considering the move from the GTX 285 to the ATI 5770. The reasoning behind this is that I'm wanting to change from a Dell 30" to the new 27" Cinema display. And obviously the 285 won't connect to this monitor. My biggest concern is the potential drop in performance. Having said that the Most intensive graphics application I have is Call of Duty 4: MW. This is at the moment at least. If better game come out that are more graphics hungry things may change, but I can still upgrade down the track. I'm really struggling to find any comparison between these two cards.

Mac Pro :: ATI 5770 Vs 5870?

Aug 11, 2010

Seen this discussion scattered throughout threads but I wanted to ask it directly here. What uses could really take advantage of the 5870? I've seen gaming benchmarks (5870 blows the 5770 away) but not much else. Specifically, I'm primarily using Aperture and some light gaming. But I'd love to hear why many of you are opting for the 5870.

Mac Pro :: Using AtMonitor For Measuring GPU% On ATI 5770

Oct 14, 2010

I just installed an ATI 5770 in a 2008 8-core MacPro and was expecting at least some speed improvement over my existing 2600XT. I had read online that Aperture 3 used OpenCL, which is supposed to supported by the 5770. When I didn't see much improvement, I started up atMonitor to see if I can see any GPU% activity. Nothing. Flatline. Does anyone know if atMonitor supports showing GPU activity with this card?

Mac Pro :: GPU - Interaction Of HD 5770 And 5970

Nov 5, 2010

I've recently got Apple's HD5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for my Mac Pro (2008 / 3,1) - I previously used a 8800GT which died. As I also use it for some gaming, I have a HD5970 in there to run DX11 games smoothly on my 30" Cinema Display. However, since I installed the graphics update from software update to give drivers to my HD5770, the machine kernel panics when starting up with the HD5970 installed.

This wasn't an issue previously: the two cards coexisted peacefully (the geforce and the HD5770 without drivers). My guess is that OS X tries to load drivers for the HD5970 and kernel panics on this phase. The HD5970 is installed in slot 1, the HD5770 is installed in slot 2. Any workarounds? Could I perhaps edit the device ID of the HD5970 into a kext to get it ignored by the system? Does the slot layout matter at all?

Mac Pro :: Can You Run A Radeon 5770 And 5870 Together

Dec 29, 2010

I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22 monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27 screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.

I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but Ive also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra 120 on it. The 5770 is 80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.

Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?

I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldnt find a lot of info on the subject. Im not really computer literate but Im willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).

Mac Pro :: Mixing VGA And DVI Monitors With 5770?

May 26, 2012

I've seen the Apple articles and the forum posts about this, but before I need to check my configuration will work before it has to be used on a show at work (the MP is running screens in a venue). I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.

Here is my proposed setup:

DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)

Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system? If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device. So Backup plan 1: DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device Mini Display Port 1 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) MDP 2 not used.

Backup plan 2:

DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device

Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device, VGA input via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter

Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter

Mac Pro :: 2008, New 5770, How To Get Audio Over MDP/HDMI

I was already running 10.6.5, so install went without a hitch. Just had to switch my primary display from the TV back to the monitor, so very smooth.I have a 27" Samsung SyncMaster 275T monitor and also a Samsung 32" LCD TV. I connected the 275T to the DVI port on the video card. I bought a MDP-to-HDMI adapter from my local apple store (Moshi brand, about $35Cdn, box says it supports audio output for mid-2010 MB/MBP and 27" iMac), and used this with an HDMI cable to connect my TV to a MDP port on the video card.Ideally I would like to get audio through MDP/HDMI to the TV, so I can watch video without turning on separate speakers/stereo receiver.

Mac Pro :: Using Version ATI HD 5770 And Flash To Work With It

Dec 8, 2010

I've got a Mac Pro1,1 (Mid 2006) with a 7300GT installed. I want to upgrade the card as cheaply as possible. I've looked on Apple Store and according to reviews/comments the ATI HD 5770 will be compatible, but its 199!? The PC version is only 100.

I know you can flash the ATI 4870, but even this is out dated now? And most of the links on the guides here are dead/the stores don't stock them anymore.

Is it possible to buy a PC version ATI HD 5770 and flash it to work with my Mac Pro?

- 5870 and 5770 work with no some issues in 2009 and 2008 Mac Pro's

- UPDATE: Weepul pointed out that Rob-ART from Barefeats had some trouble with a 30" Cinema Display and a MDP --> dual link DVI adapter on 2008/09/10 models, though he thinks this may be due to a bad adapter
