Hardware :: ATI Radeon 5770 In MacPro 2009 Too Noisy

Nov 24, 2010

I replaced the stock video card (GeForce GT 120) from my Mac Pro 2009 by the ATI Radeon 5770.

While performance is good, this card is unacceptable noisy. Fan speed, measured by iStat Pro, is between 1700-2100 rpm.

It is the only PCIe-card in my MacPro.

Mac Pro :: ATI Radeon 5770 2009 Versus Geforce GT 120

I don't play games. Would this card give a noticeable speed improvement vs the slow stock Geforce GT 120?

Apple claims this card is 5 times faster.

I use Photoshop and do a lot of video-editing.

Mac Pro :: Can You Run A Radeon 5770 And 5870 Together

Dec 29, 2010

I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22 monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27 screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.

I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but Ive also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra 120 on it. The 5770 is 80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.

Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?

I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldnt find a lot of info on the subject. Im not really computer literate but Im willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).

Mac Pro :: ATI Radeon HD 5770 Versus 5870 1GB

Aug 25, 2010

Can someone explain to me what the differences between these two graphics cards are? My main use will be with a 6-core Mac Pro and a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I'd like to watch Netflix/Huly Plus full screen. I will not be doing any video editing. I will be doing some audio editing and the basic Apple iLife applications.

What are the pros/cons of the 5770 vs the 5870? I know the 5870 uses more power and I've also heard it's louder.

Mac Pro :: Radeon HD 5770's Mini Displayports Not Working?

Feb 2, 2012

I installed the Apple 5770 card in my Mac Pro 3,1. Works great with my monitor on the DVI port. However I have a second monitor and it won't work on either of the mini displayports. I've tried the displayport -> DVI adapter, and the displayport -> HDMI adapter. I've also tried putting both monitors on the displayports with adapters. The only configuration that works is 1 monitor on the DVI port.

Mac Pro :: Apple Radeon 5770 / 5870 In Pre 2010 Model?

Aug 27, 2010

seeing as there's at least 3 threads on this topic, and I've been posting in all of them, I figured I'd create this thread to help consolidate the info we know so far. Please note, this is for *OFFICIAL* Apple Radeon 5770/5870 cards, NOT flashed cards. I'll also try to keep it updated with more info as it comes in. Also, feel free to chime in if something is wrong.

- 5870 and 5770 work with no some issues in 2009 and 2008 Mac Pro's

- UPDATE: Weepul pointed out that Rob-ART from Barefeats had some trouble with a 30" Cinema Display and a MDP --> dual link DVI adapter on 2008/09/10 models, though he thinks this may be due to a bad adapter

- UPDATE 2: Rob-ART says OWC got a 30" working on MDP of 5870. (post)- UPDATE 3: grey17 says the 5770 works in 2009 Mac Pro (link)- 5870 and 5770 work in SOME 2006 Mac Pro's:

- Rob-ART from Barefeats says it works.

- OWC says the 5770 only works with DVI works flawlessly on 2006/2007 (MDP and DVI) (post) (confirmed by netkas), and the 5870 doesn't work at all. (link).......

I purchased the ati 5770 video card upgrade in anticipation of moving my household to HD.  Yes, I knw it's been out for awhile, but I had invested in DVR's and so on and wanted to get my money's worth befor addopting new technology. Anyway, poped in the card, booted up, everything is fine. Then today I get an HD video and instead of playing I get a message about my display not being compliant This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). I was all set to purchase the 27" apple display, but if it's not going to play purchased video, what's the point? If I had a mini display port monitor attached would it play?  Or am I going to get the same error message?

Mac Pro :: How Noisy Are MP?

Mar 15, 2010

My university has some Mac Pros (probably bought about 2 or 3 years ago) in the photo studio and to be honest they are really quite loud (especially compared to iMacs and Macbook Pros).

I was wondering if Mac Pros usually are that loud or if it's just a matter of bad maintenance (some of them really sound like the fans are crapping up).

Mac Pro :: How To Know About Noisy ATI 2600?

Oct 16, 2008

I just bought a refurb MP (sig) with the standard ATI card, but it's ... the loudest part of my system (even with 4 HD's).

With nothing going on, the fan spins up, slows down, spins up, slows down, like it's pulsating. Is that normal?

Also, the 2nd Dell 2005FPW that I bought won't work via DVI with it, and I can't tell if it's the card or the monitor.

The monitor works fine with the VGA and the adapter, so I'm leaning more towards the DVI output on the monitor. But with the annoying fan, I'm not so sure.

Mac Pro :: Looking To Downgrade From GTX 285 To ATI 5770

Nov 8, 2010

I am considering the move from the GTX 285 to the ATI 5770. The reasoning behind this is that I'm wanting to change from a Dell 30" to the new 27" Cinema display. And obviously the 285 won't connect to this monitor. My biggest concern is the potential drop in performance. Having said that the Most intensive graphics application I have is Call of Duty 4: MW. This is at the moment at least. If better game come out that are more graphics hungry things may change, but I can still upgrade down the track. I'm really struggling to find any comparison between these two cards.

But I'd love to hear why many of you are opting for the 5870.

Is there a drop in replacement for the big fan that will be less loud, BUT will still move the same amount of air. The last thing I want to do is overheat the machine because I put in a substandard fan.

Mac Pro :: GPU - Interaction Of HD 5770 And 5970

Nov 5, 2010

I've recently got Apple's HD5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for my Mac Pro (2008 / 3,1) - I previously used a 8800GT which died. As I also use it for some gaming, I have a HD5970 in there to run DX11 games smoothly on my 30" Cinema Display. However, since I installed the graphics update from software update to give drivers to my HD5770, the machine kernel panics when starting up with the HD5970 installed.

This wasn't an issue previously: the two cards coexisted peacefully (the geforce and the HD5770 without drivers). My guess is that OS X tries to load drivers for the HD5970 and kernel panics on this phase. The HD5970 is installed in slot 1, the HD5770 is installed in slot 2. Any workarounds? Could I perhaps edit the device ID of the HD5970 into a kext to get it ignored by the system? Does the slot layout matter at all?

Mac Pro :: Mixing VGA And DVI Monitors With 5770?

May 26, 2012

I've seen the Apple articles and the forum posts about this, but before I need to check my configuration will work before it has to be used on a show at work (the MP is running screens in a venue). I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.

Here is my proposed setup:

DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)

Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system? If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device. So Backup plan 1: DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device Mini Display Port 1 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) MDP 2 not used.

Backup plan 2:

DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device

Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device, VGA input via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter

Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter
