View 2 RepliesI don't play games. Would this card give a noticeable speed improvement vs the slow stock Geforce GT 120?
Apple claims this card is 5 times faster.
I use Photoshop and do a lot of video-editing.
I replaced the stock video card (GeForce GT 120) from my Mac Pro 2009 by the ATI Radeon 5770.
While performance is good, this card is unacceptable noisy. Fan speed, measured by iStat Pro, is between 1700-2100 rpm.
It is the only PCIe-card in my MacPro.
I keep getting this error
"You cannot install Security Update 2009-001 on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
I have a Ubuntu iso cd made and have tried making a dual boot but after rebooting after the install it comes up to a long list of errors and then reboots to the apple log in screen. Has any one on here used Ubuntu in dual boot or on it's own on a mac mini. Just wondering what I may be doing wrong?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAre there any downfalls if I install one 2GB RAM (Crucial) with the one that came with the Mac Mini (early 2009)?
Because I heard that if I use 4GB, I only get like 3.3GB.
So instead of spending $70 for 2/2GB, I should just get a single 2GB and install it with the regular one that the Mini came with.
Any problems with doing this?

My iMac is old. 2003 runs lepoard and 85 gig and I gig memory. Problem is can't find finder ( where's finder) turned off and on to no avail hard drive is 95% full also use Iomega 450 gig portable hd!

I am considering the move from the GTX 285 to the ATI 5770. The reasoning behind this is that I'm wanting to change from a Dell 30" to the new 27" Cinema display. And obviously the 285 won't connect to this monitor. My biggest concern is the potential drop in performance. Having said that the Most intensive graphics application I have is Call of Duty 4: MW. This is at the moment at least. If better game come out that are more graphics hungry things may change, but I can still upgrade down the track. I'm really struggling to find any comparison between these two cards.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSeen this discussion scattered throughout threads but I wanted to ask it directly here. What uses could really take advantage of the 5870? I've seen gaming benchmarks (5870 blows the 5770 away) but not much else. Specifically, I'm primarily using Aperture and some light gaming. But I'd love to hear why many of you are opting for the 5870.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI just installed an ATI 5770 in a 2008 8-core MacPro and was expecting at least some speed improvement over my existing 2600XT. I had read online that Aperture 3 used OpenCL, which is supposed to supported by the 5770. When I didn't see much improvement, I started up atMonitor to see if I can see any GPU% activity. Nothing. Flatline. Does anyone know if atMonitor supports showing GPU activity with this card?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently got Apple's HD5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for my Mac Pro (2008 / 3,1) - I previously used a 8800GT which died. As I also use it for some gaming, I have a HD5970 in there to run DX11 games smoothly on my 30" Cinema Display. However, since I installed the graphics update from software update to give drivers to my HD5770, the machine kernel panics when starting up with the HD5970 installed.
This wasn't an issue previously: the two cards coexisted peacefully (the geforce and the HD5770 without drivers). My guess is that OS X tries to load drivers for the HD5970 and kernel panics on this phase. The HD5970 is installed in slot 1, the HD5770 is installed in slot 2. Any workarounds? Could I perhaps edit the device ID of the HD5970 into a kext to get it ignored by the system? Does the slot layout matter at all?
I have a few question for people who have upgraded to the ATI 5770 form the 8800GT.
It looks looks the install is pretty straight forward. But what type of performance upgrade can I expect? I use manly Photoshop, Lightroom and X-plane. Are there any hidden got-you's?
I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22 monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27 screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.
I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but Ive also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra 120 on it. The 5770 is 80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.
Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?
I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldnt find a lot of info on the subject. Im not really computer literate but Im willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).
I'm upgrading my 2008 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770. I intend to connect it to two 23" LED monitors with DVI interfaces. Can I use one of the DVI ports on the HD 5770 and one of the Mini DisplayPorts with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter or am I better off using both MiniDisplay Ports?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've seen the Apple articles and the forum posts about this, but before I need to check my configuration will work before it has to be used on a show at work (the MP is running screens in a venue). I've seen lots of scenarios with people using all DVI monitors or all VGA, but can't find any examples where they are mixed.
Here is my proposed setup:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - First device (DVI input only)
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device (DVI/VGA input but strongly prefer to use DVI) via Mini Display Port -> DVI adapter (passive?)Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) My worry is that there is only one active adapter in the system? If this won't work, I have two backup plans, which I would also like to know if it will work or not, please. One of the DVI devices has a buffered DVI link out, so I could use that to feed the other DVI device. So Backup plan 1: DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device Mini Display Port 1 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter (active?) MDP 2 not used.
Backup plan 2:
DVI output - 800 x 600 - DVI in of first device
Mini Display Port 1 - also 800 x 600 - Second device, VGA input via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter
Mini Display Port 2 - 1376 x 7?? - Monitor running the UI (VGA input) via Mini Display Port -> VGA adapter

Can someone explain to me what the differences between these two graphics cards are? My main use will be with a 6-core Mac Pro and a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I'd like to watch Netflix/Huly Plus full screen. I will not be doing any video editing. I will be doing some audio editing and the basic Apple iLife applications.
What are the pros/cons of the 5770 vs the 5870? I know the 5870 uses more power and I've also heard it's louder.
I have a GT120 and a GTX285 running one ACD 30" and two ACD 20"... I'm selling my 30" to get the all new ACD 27"... I'm also thinking of selling off the two 20's as well... Does this also mean that I need to sell my GT120 and GTX285 and either get a 5770 or 5870 to make the ACD 27" work?
What are my options? I know the 5870 is not available... I'm not a big gamer or graphics designer, but love the best!
someone might be able to help me, I have a mac pro 2009 with a NV GT120 GFX card. Ive been waiting to upgrade to a 5870 for ages and was hopeing Apple might release the update that has been on the website for ages anytime soon, but ive given up waiting now i have ordered the 5770 for now.anyways, will i need to install anything after i fit the new Ati 5770? like drivers ect, and can anyone point me in the direction of where to download these mac drivers please.
View 20 Replies View RelatedI was already running 10.6.5, so install went without a hitch. Just had to switch my primary display from the TV back to the monitor, so very smooth.I have a 27" Samsung SyncMaster 275T monitor and also a Samsung 32" LCD TV. I connected the 275T to the DVI port on the video card. I bought a MDP-to-HDMI adapter from my local apple store (Moshi brand, about $35Cdn, box says it supports audio output for mid-2010 MB/MBP and 27" iMac), and used this with an HDMI cable to connect my TV to a MDP port on the video card.Ideally I would like to get audio through MDP/HDMI to the TV, so I can watch video without turning on separate speakers/stereo receiver.

I've got a Mac Pro1,1 (Mid 2006) with a 7300GT installed. I want to upgrade the card as cheaply as possible. I've looked on Apple Store and according to reviews/comments the ATI HD 5770 will be compatible, but its 199!? The PC version is only 100.
I know you can flash the ATI 4870, but even this is out dated now? And most of the links on the guides here are dead/the stores don't stock them anymore.
Is it possible to buy a PC version ATI HD 5770 and flash it to work with my Mac Pro?
I'm considering upgrading my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 GHz 8-core computer from an ATI Radeon 2600 XT to an HD 5770. What kind of adapter(s) do I need to connect (2) LG IPS235V monitors to an ATI Radeon HD 5770?

I recently sold my XFX 4870 in anticipation of the new cards that will be coming to the MP's soon. I understand that the question will not be answered until the new MP's come out and someone can extract the BIOS. But I wanted to start a thread of which cards (Brand, Model, Rev #) works with our MP's (looks like 2008 and later).
View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed the Apple 5770 card in my Mac Pro 3,1. Works great with my monitor on the DVI port. However I have a second monitor and it won't work on either of the mini displayports. I've tried the displayport -> DVI adapter, and the displayport -> HDMI adapter. I've also tried putting both monitors on the displayports with adapters. The only configuration that works is 1 monitor on the DVI port.

To see how it looks: [url] I can not find the cause of its pixels that appear on the screen. Only in the viewer. They occur randomly when I add an effect FCPX. (not just a plug-tier) These pixels are found embedded in the video if I made one!It does not appear immediately launching FCP but after 5 minutes after playing withthe settings of my corrections. When they appear in FCP if I run photoshop, I have the same pixels in the window of my image in Photoshop I did not think I shall give my card GT120 But I have an ATI 5770 with an Apple MacPro 4.1 What I tried: reinstall FCP New partition with 10.6.8 and 10.7 fired FCP preferences Reset PRAM + SMC Changed the cables and adapters of my screens Does this card is defective? Why do they not appear in the screen

seeing as there's at least 3 threads on this topic, and I've been posting in all of them, I figured I'd create this thread to help consolidate the info we know so far. Please note, this is for *OFFICIAL* Apple Radeon 5770/5870 cards, NOT flashed cards. I'll also try to keep it updated with more info as it comes in. Also, feel free to chime in if something is wrong.
- 5870 and 5770 work with no some issues in 2009 and 2008 Mac Pro's
- UPDATE: Weepul pointed out that Rob-ART from Barefeats had some trouble with a 30" Cinema Display and a MDP --> dual link DVI adapter on 2008/09/10 models, though he thinks this may be due to a bad adapter
- UPDATE 2: Rob-ART says OWC got a 30" working on MDP of 5870. (post)- UPDATE 3: grey17 says the 5770 works in 2009 Mac Pro (link)- 5870 and 5770 work in SOME 2006 Mac Pro's:
- Rob-ART from Barefeats says it works.
- OWC says the 5770 only works with DVI works flawlessly on 2006/2007 (MDP and DVI) (post) (confirmed by netkas), and the 5870 doesn't work at all. (link).......
