Mac Pro :: Bottom Riser Red LED Light On - RAM Use To Work Now It Doesn't?

Mar 10, 2008

I just installed 4x1gb OWC ram onto my top riser, adding onto my previous 2x512(dimm 1&2) + 2x1gb setup (which is now on my bottom riser). My previous setup had no problems and OSX detected the ram just fine but now with my previous setup on the bottom riser, OSX only detects the top riser with the new OWC 4x1gb ram. My former setup now displays a red LED light on the bottom riser.

Mac Pro :: Red Light On Riser Card

Jul 25, 2009

Yesterday, I unhooked everything from my MP to install the following: 2nd superdrive, 2GB RAM stick, Intel SSD, stock Nvidia GT120(slot 3). Now, I have since taken out the additional RAM because testing showed faster memory tests with 3x2GB ram sticks vs 4x2GB. I'm assuming because of tri-channel memory. Anyway, now when I cut the computer on I'm getting a brief red light flash on the riser card. I have looked in system profiler and it shows all DIMM slots as "OK" and is showing 6GB of RAM. I have inserted the OSX DVD and ran a short and long hardware test and nothing shows up wrong or problematic.

The computer as you can tell in my other thread about SSD benchmarks is running at great speed! The only true weird thing is when I tried to boot from the OSX DVD to restore from a time machine backup on the Intel SSD, the MP hangs up on the grey screen with the apple logo(spinning wheel is there but freezes eventually) and on my second monitor is shows a box that says "You need to restart your computer". So this is a kernal panic, no? The nearest Apple store is over 2 hours away and the same goes for an authorized shop.

Also, I installed the stock HDD and the factory RAM and the light still remains. The only way I could use my SSD was to use carbon cloner and put the SSD in bay 4 and go that route. Everything worked fine and the SSD is now the boot drive. But, its kinda irritating because if this thing fails I can't boot from the OSX DVD to restore. The only thing I haven't done is remove the Nvidia GT120 but I had to re-install that crappy thing because I am running 3 monitors now. I have my main monitor(dock) hooked to the GTX285 and monitors 2 and 3 running of the GT120.

Software :: Desktop Shows Light From The Bottom?

Jul 7, 2008

I'm not sure if this make sense, but I'll do my best. (I'm a Mac newbie as of four days ago, and generally loving it)

I've somehow set up my display to have an appearance of a folding effect emanating from the bottom of the screen. This effect also shows through any open windows, which is annoying and distracting. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and how to turn it off, I'd appreciate it. I tried taking a screen grab, but the effect doesn't show up on it.

Hardware :: Flickering Light On Right Bottom Of Cinema Display

Nov 26, 2007

Got a bit of a wierd one. Apple 22" cinema display (the old style). Running from a mac pro with a ATI radeon 1900XT graphics card. Have 4 operating systems running, all were working perfectly until last night. Leopard works great - no problems, as does Tiger and Windows XP running boot camp. What does not work is Vista x64. It was not installed with compatible bootcamp because x64 operating systems are not supported yet. It has been running fine for months though? I also run a small dell 17" TFT off the same graphics card and no problems with that. It defaults to the main desktop on starting up vista, but only in vista. And I get this fast flashing light - about 2 every second or so - regularly. No amber lights and no groups of three.

MacBook Pro :: Some Blue / Magenta Light Leaking From Bottom Of Screen - Is It Normal?

May 12, 2010

My 2010 13" Pro seems to have some blue/magenta light leaking from the bottom of the screen. This is only visible with the brightness turned up and against a black background (i.e. when watching a letterbox movie). It's quite different from the "typical" white light leak that I've witnessed on other lcds. Would this be "normal"?

Also - and this may seem like nit-picking - but my caps lock key feels a bit flimsier than the rest of the keys. Again - is this "normal"?

Hardware :: Mighty Mouse Pointer Stopped Responding / Green Light On Bottom Of Mouse Flashing

May 1, 2009

I know that the general consensus here is that the Mighty Mouse is a piece of shit. That notwithstanding, I'd appreciate posters refraining from engaging in further elaborations on that concept when replying to this topic (i.e., no comments like "Buy a new mouse," please).

At any rate, I purchased a wireless Mighty Mouse about a month ago and was very happy with it until the batteries apparently died. One day the pointer simply stopped responding and the green light on the bottom of the mouse was flashing. I replaced the batteries and the mouse resumed normal operation. Then, a few days later it happened again. I have yet to re-replace the batteries and have reverted to using my now eight-year-old Logitech dual-optical mouse (possibly the finest peripheral I have ever owned). Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Is this mouse having internal hardware or software issues or is it normal for it to devour batteries at this rate? System Preferences says that Bluetooth is maintaining the connection properly, so I am ruling that out as an issue. I would just say to hell with it, and use my Logitech mouse full-time, but my wife hates it and I payed seventy goddamn dollars for the Apple product.

MacBook Air :: More Light On Left Part Of The Screen Than Bottom Right Of Screen

May 30, 2010

Is it just me or the macbook air has a problem with backlight? it's very very bright compare to my mbp 13.3 but it seems like the left part of the screen receive a lot more light than the bottom right of the screen. I notice that on the mbp pro but its worse on the mba. I have a rev2 1.86 with a 9400. In this review (in spanish) they check the brightness levels on the screen, and there is a difference between center and bottom right corner (340cd/m2 vs 215cd/m2)

Last night however i did notice that the light on the magsafe was a light green color, not the normal green/orange it usually is.

Any idea?, its a AluMB from Oct 2008. Could it be my battery or just the charger?. I do have Apple care.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Doesn't Respond - Back Light Still On?

Jan 2, 2011

So a friend spilled some liquids on his new macbook pro 13 5,5.Unibody The keyboard no longer worked, the hd was fried, so he gave it to me and switched to PC's . I replaced the HD, and connected an external keyboard.

Luckily nothing else was effected and it powered up. What I find strange is that the back light still works although NONE of the keys do. The power button and the trackpad still work as well.

I have accepted that I have to purchase a costly top case, but could i not just replace the keys?

Windows On Mac :: Back Light Doesn't Fully Turn Off In XP?

May 3, 2008

This is something that has happened since my initial installation of XP on my bootcamp partition. Whenever the light sensor detects low light, the backlight turns on at full blast. This is normal. However, when I go to turn the backlight off completely (as to save battery or if I'm watching a movie in windows and I don't want to see the keyboard lit up) it turns it down, but not completely off. Even though the backlight indicator claims that it is down the whole way, it never completely turns off. In OSX when I do this, it turns it completely off whenever I set it to the same setting.

has anyone had something similar in their MBP or any ideas of what is wrong? Is it just something with the drivers?

MacBook :: Won't Turn On No White IR Light And The Fan Doesn't Respond?

Mar 6, 2010

So this morning I woke up and went to press the power button of my Macbook, but nothing happened. I noticed that there is no white IR light and the fan doesn't respond. I checked the battery, it was at full. The power cable was also green when i plugged it into the Macbook. However, it still wouldn't turn on.

Just a general comment, I use the Macbook as a printer server and to browse the internet, so nothing intensive is forced onto the Macbook. So then I tried resetting the SMU, didn't work. I tried turning it on with only battery , and then with only power source, both didn't work either.I have never spilled anything on this macbook, never dropped it, smashed it, or abused it in any way. However, it is 2 years old and I never bought Applecare (Usually, if something is defective, it will show within the first 30 days). I assume it's a logic board failure, and it's going to cost around 700 to fix (which i'd rather just get a new macbook).

I was wondering if anybody know of a reason why the logic board broke, or if there is any remedies that i haven't tried yet? Also, I'm thinking of pawning it off on ebay and then save up and wait for the Macbook Pro refresh. Does anyone have an estimate on how much I can get for a broken Macbook (screen is fine, 4gb of ram (i might replace it w/ 2gb instead) 250 gb HD (might replace with 80gb HD instead), 2.0 ghz c2d (prbly useless cuz the logic board is fried)

Mac Pro :: Lost Another Two GB Of RAM On Riser Card?

Jun 18, 2010

I had 8 - 1GB RAM sticks spread out between the two riser cards in my Mac Pro.About six months ago I turned on my Mac Pro the and the power light began blinking white. I narrowed it down to slots 3 and 4 were bad on my lower riser card. That knocked me down to 6GB of RAM. About one week ago I turned my Mac Pro on again and the white light started blinking again!!! Slots 3 and 4 on the upper riser card went bad this time. Now I am down to 4GB of RAM.

My Mac Pro is a 2008 [early] btw unless you saw it in my sig already.I am just curious if this is common for a 2yr old Mac Pro for the riser cards to go bad like this. When I get a spare $200 I plan on replacing both riser cards as I have not found them anywhere online cheaper than about $100.

MacBook Pro :: Safari4.0 Doesn't Work - Shuts Down - Ichat Can't Work

I can't download rapidshare links on iGetter anymore and everything just feels wrong. Countless threads have been opened on this matter with a variety of different problems for different people. Yet I have not read a proper solution. I have seen all kinds of technical solutions being offered but I'm not a computer wiz and I do not know the terms they use. I just want to go back to Safari 3.2 or at least the one before the 4.0 But I read that deleting Safari 4 and reinstalling 3.2 won't work because of a certain webkit that got installed with it, making it impossible to go back.
