I hear that the Apple RAID card is not Boot camp bootable/compatible.
And I know that the Areca hardware RAID cards are OS-X bootable (Leopard).
I like to know if you can boot Boot camp/Windowszz with those card's.
it has been a while since my last post, but i am running into a big issue with my mac pro. I just recently got a areca arc 1210 and i am trying build a bootable RAID 0 through the card. View 24 Replies View RelatedHaving never set up a RAID config I was hoping I could get a little confirmation on setting up. Firstly, all data will be backed up using a NAS (maybe a time capsule), so at the moment I am just looking to mirror the primary drive of a Power Mac G5 incase of hardware faults.
The G5 is acting as a server and I therefore want to arrive at a situation that if a drive fails, the machine will still boot perfectly from one of the redundant disks (and of course notify the user to the failure), i.e. a bootable RAID 1 configurationAs I understand it, I can only achieve this using a dedicated RAID controller (i.e. this can't be done via a software raid)? Is this the case?
I am looking for some kind of external RAID that I can boot from.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI tried to install ubuntu with bootcamp on a different hard drive. Something happened and now when I turn on my computer it says no bootable devices. It doesn't even see my OSX hard drive. I tried booting up my computer and holding down option. It doesn't work. I have a wireless microsoft keyboard. Is it not letting me hold down option because the computer finds the wrieless keyboard to late. Some one said u have to hold down the option key before the mac sounds happens. The keyboard lights don't come on till after that. Should I get a USB keyboard? I have to press the start button on the keyboard to act as the option key when I'm in osx. Would the computer know that the start key is the option key on boot up?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI first installed Windows XP when I got my early 2008 Mac Pro. Boot Camp was probably beta back then, but I cant say my experience has changed much through Vista 32 bit or now Windows 7 64 bit. The way to dual boot, holding ALt during boot, has worked 1/10 times. Literally. The boot symbols are usually delayed, so I know when I choose the win partition, it gives me the "No bootable device" error. Two times have I had heavy OS X crashes after these boot-up "games". This last time I had to completely reinstall OS X (or upgrade to SL). How could this be, im not even booting into OS X when I am trying to boot into win.
I even have a separate hard drive for my Win partition. Not to mention the stream of driver issues you encounter when you finally manage to get inside Windows. I actually had my apple wireless and mouse working in Windows 7, but then I installed Boot Camp drivers of the DVD, and now theyre dead. I know. Its Windows, why would I miss it? Gaming or apps, regardless. Apple shouldnt include a program that functions so poorly, if they insist on higher standards elsewhere. It only reflects badly upon them. I consider myself a decent level mac user, venturing into command line troubleshooting if needed. But BootCamp remains a mystery to me.
I've got a 2.4GHZ white non-aluminum Macbook. I was attempting to install Windows XP through the Bootcamp assistant but ran into some major problems. When XP asked me to format the 150GB partition (even though I only created a 10GB Windows partition in Boot Camp), I clicked yes. (just wasn't paying attention I guess) and now I have a non-bootable, 150GB NTFS drive in my macbook. Attempting to boot just gives me a great picture of a folder with a blinking question mark. I booted off the DVD to wipe and reload, but Disk Utility won't let me erase or repartition the disk. It sees the disk but everything is greyed out.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro from the summer of 2008 that I wish to create a backup for. I partitioned the hard drive to have both an OSX Journaled Partition for 10.5 and an NTFS partition for Windows XP Pro SP3. I wish to create a bootable backup for this computer onto an external USB drive. (e.g. if I remove the internal hard drive, except for the speed difference, I should not notice a difference). How is this done? Most copying programs don't seem to make the NTFS partition bootable, and any mix-and-matching ends up making it go kaput. (I also wish to be able to copy this backup partition back onto an internal SATA drive should the original drive die.) Also, when I press alt at the EFI screen to select boot devices, none of the partitions on my external hard drive appear, even though I made an image of my Windows partition there, which should be bootable.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my HDD, I simply used disk Utility to move data for the OSX HFS partition.
I tried to use Winclone to move but that didn't work too well, plus there is a unnecessary image step, so I ended up moving using disk utility again which again went fine.
The only problem is that rather than creating the partition through bootcamp assistant, I created it straight in diskutility and windows is not bootable.
I tried using fdisk to fix but that didn't work.
The partition table is GUID based and the windows partition is NTFS.
LSI 9240-8i SAS RAID for BootCamp only. Will it be bootable for BootCamp? Anyone using that card? I need to connect 4 SSD drives to work with my Mac Pro for Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

It doesn't seem to be BootCamp drivers available for the card that Apple sells, so I found this card instead:

It has EFI firmware and is able to boot MacOSX from raid arrays. The only question is if it is able to boot stuff through Bios emulation.
Vista x64 is the primary target here, and SP1 actually has EFI booting support, so it might be possible to use this. However when I tried to install Vista x64 with SP1 integrated on the MacBook Air I wasn't even able to boot installer DVD because of EFI incompatibilities.
Anyone have any experiences with booting BootCamp on a MacPro with a raid card?
I'm planning to setup a RAID on My Mac Pro (2006 2.66 Quad Core). I know Bootcamp not support Hardware Raid Card. Can I use the Hardware Raid Card for boot Mac OS X and storage Data, and use the onboard controller boot the Bootcamp Drive?
View 6 Replies View RelatedAccording to everything I've read, this shouldn't have worked, but it seems that Win7's ability to boot from GPT volumes makes it possible. I just replace the optical drive in my 2.66 MBP with a 2nd Seagate 500g drive and wanted to see what the OSX soft raid could do.
Long story short:
1. Each of the pair of disks contained a member of the larger OSX raid volume, plus a smaller partition intended for Windows.
2. The win-intended partitions stayed independent and formatted as FAT32.
3. Booted off of Win7 media. In setup, selected 1 of the FAT32 partitions and reformatted it NTFS. Installer accepted the partition as valid and installation proceeded normally and completed with Win7 as a valid boot option. OSX still works, of course.
Windows installer wouldn't accept the drives as a raid volume and although Vista is supposed to support GPT for data volumes, it wouldn't accept it as a system vol. Don't bother with Bootcamp Setup Assistant. It simply says there's no valid disk and is of no help at all. This has to be done manually.
I am thinking of using two 80 gig Intel SSD's in my mac pro. I am a bootcamp user...
Should i put win 7 on one ssd and osxsl on another?
Or should I hardware Raid-0 them and partition the raid-0 in half for each os?
I have just installed an ARECA 1210ML external RAID controller in an early 2008 octocore Mac Pro. Everything seems to be working fine.However, when I press the power button to switch on the Mac, there is a immediate loud single beep. I am using refit & the beep happens before the list of OS's appears.There is a system setting in the ARECA config web interface that allows me to
disable the system beeper but it doesn't seem to stop the beep.

I've had a right afternoon of it!After making a clean install of 10.6 i first tried to install as per the instructions on the CD and then their ftp site, but they both threw up errors ("getFileAttributes requires native support" and then "check log"). View 24 Replies View RelatedI created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

I just recently purchased a Macbook, and I created a bootable backup of the system. The macbook boots from the backup, but when I try to boot from the backup on our G5 and also our Powerbook G4 it will not work. The G5 does not even see the bootable partitions I created, and the G4 sees them, but when I select the partition to boot from, the computer just restarts and boots from the Powerbook hardrive. We are having to send the Macbook back for some small power issues, and we need a bootable backup of this sytem that works. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the Macbook is an intel based computer and the Powerbook G4 is not? Also, the macbook is running Snow Leopard, and the Powerbook is on Tiger.

My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?
Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?
I have a new Mac Pro Quad 2.93 with the Mac RAID card installed with four 1TB drives setup in a RAID 5 array. When creating the volumes in the RAID utility, you can not edit them, resize, etc. If one large volume is created in the RAID utility, you can then partition that one volume using the Apple Disk Utility, which then allows you to resize if needed.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am planning on getting a 2010 MP when they come and have a question about it. I am 90% sure that with my budget, I will not be able to after a RAID card. I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. Feel free to list any other pros and cons about either a software RAID or hardware RAID, I wana make sure I have all the details before making a final decision on it.

Can I setup RAID 1 (or call it mirroring) without the RAID card? I have two 1TB internal drives in my Mac Pro and I want to mirror them. I don't want to spend another 700 bucks just to setup a mirror.
Disk Utility shows some RAID options, but I am not sure how to use them, or if they will work at all without the RAID card.
On my 2009 Mac Pro, OS X's disk utility seems to allow the provision of making a mirror RAID or a stripe RAID.
Is it possible to shove in 2 drives, make a RAID 0 for two of them, and then add in 2 more drives to make a RAID 1 out of that RAID 0? (a RAID 0+1?)
