Mac Mini :: Fan Speed On 2.4ghz (2010) Never Changes?

Jun 20, 2010

mine is always around 1800 rpm regardless of internal temps. i spiked both cores of the cpu to 100% for 5 minutes (cputest), and the cpu temp got up to 164F (73C) from an idle temp of 100F (38C), but the fan was still 1800 rpm. i played a bunch of 1080p trailers simultaneously to give the gpu and hdd a workout while transferring a few gigabytes via wifi. fan still stayed around 1800 rpm.

during the 2 hours while the migration assistant was doing its thing, the top of the mac mini got fairly hot. not scorching hot, but noticeably warmer than idle, while the fan was still quiet as usual. i could feel really hot air coming out of the rear vent, but the fan wasn't blowing harder than usual. i'm assuming it was running at 1800 rpm even as the hdd was generating some massive heat. this is very troubling to me. has anyone seen the fan increase in speed as temps rise in the latest mac mini (macmini4,1)?

Mac :: Mac Mini 2010 (2.4GHz) 4gigs Or 8gigs Of RAM?

Oct 12, 2010

I just bought my first Mac - Mac mini 2010 (2.4GHz) with 2gigs of RAM and I have to say that it really isn't enough for me and I'd like to ask you, skilled professionals what upgrade should I make, to 4 or 8gigs.

I use Mac mini for normal things - text, email, internet, 1080p movies and sometimes also web delepment (Photoshop + Dreamweaver) and virtual Win7. And those 2gigs are used up really really fast.

What do you think, are 4gigs for those things fine or should I rather buy 8? Problem is that I read a lot of troubles with 8gigs of RAM on new Mac mini (troubles with boot etc.) and since I'm from Czech republic, I don' t have access to Crucial or any other 100% Mac compatible makers, just ADATa, Corsair, Kingston,...

Laptops :: 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro 2010 Does Not Connect To "N" Network?

May 8, 2010

I have a brand new 13.3" 2010 MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz. I also have a 24" iMac and a new Mac Mini. I am using a Buffalo WHR-HP-GN as my router and wireless connection. The iMac and the Mini both connect to the network at "N" speeds while the new MacBook Pro only connects at "G". I have tried everything but it will not connect at "N". It will connect at "N" at the Apple store, so it seems strange that one out of three computers will not connect.

I also have an MSI Netbook with OSX 10.6.3 and it also connects at "N" speed. Does anyone have any ideas? It seems like I am not the only one having this problem as it is mentioned on the Apple forums. Tech support was unable to help, so they escalated my case, what ever that means.

MacBook Pro :: 2009 13" 2.26Ghz Vs. 2010 13" 2.4Ghz?

Jul 15, 2010

Dilemma, which is really the better machine.

I know there isn't a great deal in the benchmarks for the two.

But for the price difference I don't know which to go with is the newer one worth the extra $$ ?

The main thing I am trying to get my head around is the Graphics and Memory difference. Basically the 2009 has the 9400M and 2GB of Ram vs. the 2010 which has the 320m and 4GB of Ram.

Is the difference that great?

Also, in checkout I'm able to upgrade to 4GB of RAM for only $90, is there anywhere cheaper? Or that's about as low as it goes?

How To Speed Up Macbook Air (2010)

Mar 20, 2012

Under Lion my 2010 (HDD) Macbook Air has been intolerably slow. It could take 10 minutes to start a program. When connecting to a projector, it could likewise take 10 minutes for it to resize windows during which it was unresponsive. I have been about to hurl it in the trashcan because this computer was just such an impediment to my work. But now I found the solution: don't run Safari. I had long suspected 2G ram combined with a slow HDD was the culprit. I tried to minimize the number of programs open, but let Safari run permanently. But it turns out Safari uses enormeous amounts of memory, and it has a tendency to just grow and grow its memory grab. Now, I quit Safari when I want to run other programs, and after this the computer is merely slow, not intollerably so.

Hardware :: 56" 1080p Samsung Not Recognizing Mini - DVI To VGA / Black MacBook 2.4GHz

Jul 3, 2009

I bought the correct Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and 3.5mm audio cable for my black macbook 2.4GHz in order to project and watch movies, etc. When I hook everything up, the MacBook display settings recognize another display immediately. However the Samsung doesn't see anything connected into the VGA input. I know its not the Samsung HDTV because I had an '08 HP laptop hooked up just fine a few months ago. Should I try different resolutions? I searched the forums for awhile but nata.

Mac Mini :: Good High Resolution LCD Monitor Compatible With 2010 Mini Server?

Jun 23, 2010

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

Mac Mini :: Installed A Kingston SSD Drive In My 2010 Mac Mini?

Aug 24, 2010

I installed a Kingston SSD drive in my 2010 mac mini. If I put the OSX install DVD (grey disc 1), the SSD is not visible in either the installer or disk utility.

The SSD is a Kingston 64 GB SATA 2.5-inch SSDNow V Series Solid State Drive. Cheap drive.

The funny thing is that before i started all this I restored a SuperDuper image of 10.6.4 from my old mini to the SSD using a usb to SATA adapter. Installed and it worked! The SSD booted OS X but the ethernet jack was not working.

Does anyone know of a workaround for installing OSX onto a drive that is not being recognized in disk utility?

I'd like to find a way to reinstall OSX using the grey DVD without having to remove the SSD drive.

MacBook Pro :: 2010 13" Slow FW800 Transfer Speed

Nov 9, 2010

I purchased a FW800 enclosure for my Seagate 500GB 5400rpm HD. I just got a 2010 13" MBP. I was previously using a 2006 MBP with an ExpressCard slot, and had this hard drive connected over eSATA. According to TomsHardware the max sustained write speed of this drive is around 65MB/s, which is what I was getting over eSATA. So I got the FW800 enclosure now that I can't use eSATA with the thought that I'd be getting the same 65MB/s that this drive is capable of. FW800 should be able to handle up to 100MB/s. But I'm only getting around 40MB/s, closer to what I should be getting if I was using FW400.

Mac Mini :: Using SDHC For Booting The 2010 Mini?

Sep 12, 2010

I was toying with this idea mostly for a backup boot drive for my 2010 Mini.

Since SDHC memory cards are so small, that's why they appeal for this use. I have 32GB ones that should work just fine since I'm now using 40GB SSD's for boot drives. My current boot requirement is only around 27GB with OSX, Home, all Applications, etc.

Think what a nice compact size you could have for a boot drive. The question is can you boot to SDHC's. If you can boot to an USB stick, why not an SDHC?

If it routinely works, then I could use both internal drives for lots of data storage. Maybe that could replace SSD's for boot drives. Or maybe the transfer rate is too slow for SDHC's.

Mac Mini :: 2010 Mini Web Browsing Slow?

Jul 4, 2010

I finally took plunge and grabbed a new mini. I have it wired directly to my airport and the web browsing is slow on it. For example I will go to engadget.com and it will only load half way and then just stop. I thought maybe my internet was going crazy but my windows desktop connected "right next to it on airport" loads instantly.

It does this on different web sites. I even did the safari reset but its same issue. Any suggestions on what I can do to trouble shoot? I dont want to take this thing back.

I was also wondering if there was a way to Mirror my display but with two different resolutions? I have googled this and cant find a straight answer at least not from anything posted in last couple years....

I have 1900x1200 on my Pc display and I have an HDMI going under house to My 65" Plasma which is 1900x1080

Any software tweaks I can do? This is a permanent setup with the ipad as the remote....

Mac Mini :: New Mac Mini Mid-2010 Fast Enough ?

Aug 9, 2010

I'm currently thinking about selling my MacBook Pro for a desktop mac as I've got an iPad lately and my mobile needs are well served by that.

So I've already got a 24-inch display and therefore the mac mini is my favourite.

I'm just not sure if the mini will serve my needs. I'm doing raw file editing (EOS 7D raw files in lightroom 3 + photoshop), some video editing/encoding and just the usual stuff like browsing, watching movies, typing and and and.....it would be nice if my new setup would have some performance reserves though....

I'm considering the following mini setup:

-2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo
-320M Graphics
-8 GB RAM (got these already in my mbp)
-500 GB Momentus XT Hybrid

Mac Mini :: MM (Mid-2010) Ram Upgrade?

Oct 1, 2010

I tried searching up this question but could not find any results.

I was watching the youtube video on the ram upgrading and I noticed that the person took out 2x 1GB ram pieces and put in 2x 2GB ram pieces.

The ram I purchased is 1x 4GB piece and I am just wondering if there would be any drawbacks for using 1x 1GB and 1x 4GB in my set-up. I remember that for PC, it's best if the RAM is the same size/speed/manufacturer. My newly purchased ram is from OWC.

Additionally, if I decide to only have 1x 4GB left in there, does it matter which slot I put it in? There are two slots that are empty and I'm not sure if there is a primary slot or secondary slot.

Mar 25, 2012

My Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.1 will not accept the update to 10.7.2 or 10.7.3. I know that there have been some MacBook Pro's that wont accept the install. I have run disk utility and repaired disk permissions and verified the disk. I cant boot off a disk as Lion is a direct download from the App store. I have read that 10.7.2 was very buggy and some people were restorong back to 10.7.1. Can I update to 10.7.3 from 10.7.1. I have also tried the stand alone installers. The same problem the .dmg downloads and opens I run the install package which validates and runs. When I am prompted to restart a message comes up same unexpected error ocurred unable to install and a restart option. Its driving me nuts.

HD Early 2010 Mac Mini Broken Again

Jun 6, 2012

The HD of my early 2010 Mac Mini has broken again. I'm trying to decide whether to get it repaired, replace the Mac Mini or give up on Mac Mini's altogether (it's ruined my confidence in Apple). I have the Mac Mini placed on a shelf above the television and about a centimeter from a reasonably small speaker (the centre speaker in my audio setup). There is a reasonable space for cooling: no shelves above, 20 centimeters from the wall behind but little to no room left and right (never heard any strange noises from the fan though which suggest overheating). Could something around it be causing the HD to break (magnetism)? I don't want to get the HD repaired and have it break again next year. HD's are too expensive for that!

Mac Mini :: (mid 2010) Stopped Booting With 8GB RAM

Jul 4, 2012

I went thru (I think) all related topics, but my issue is little bit different.

Got Mac Mini (mid 2010) in our company for developming.

About two month ago we decided to upgrade RAM, so we ordered this memory kit: Patriot SO-DIMM Signature Line Apple 8GB (kit 2x 4GB) 1333 At first, I had problems to install stick at all, but after a little bit of magic, I made this mac mini fully operational with 2x4GB of RAM.

Today, Mac have to be restarted, after restart only beeping (long single beep).

And I am back in situaion where I was two months ago. It is working with 4+1, 1+4, 4+0, 0+4 or 1+1 sticks combinations, but not in 4+4. Again, it worked normally for more than two months, detected in OS, everywhere. Tried reset PRAM, reset EFI, OSX: Lion 10.7.4
