I have a 1.33Ghz 12' Powerbook with 768mb Ram. I'd like to upgrade this. As I understand it, the max RAM for this machine is 1GB. I'm just wondering if anyone could give me an idea as to how much of a speed boost I could expect from this upgrade? is it worth doing? Will it make a difference? Spoke to Apple technician this morning, and I think he said he would take out the 512mb RAM chip and install a 1Gb one - but wouldn't this give me 1.25GB, approximately? I didn't think this machine could take that. He left me a little confused. Have just found out that I can actually max my machine out to 1.25GB for a fairly cheap price. Seems worth doing then, yes? Anybody made a jump from 768 - 1.25 before? Did it make a big difference?
I got myself a PowerBook G4, trying to weigh my options as far as upgrades go. The airport inside this laptop gives me horrible reception, always has, always will. Would a wireless card give me a significant boost of speed/reception? If you have experience with it, please add your input as I'm trying to justify this purchase if it will have benefits. Example, I'm in my bedroom, 2 floors down is the wireless router (not that far away), and sometimes reception drops to 0...I'd like to have a solid connection.
I just bought my first Mac for use in my personal photo studio, a refurbed 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.5ghz. As I was setting up external drives and putting the mini through its paces, I ran a disk benchmark (BlackMagic Disk Speed Test) and got some pretty poor scores.
My mini's internal drive hits roughly 40MB/s for both sequential read and sequential write. Am I correct in thinking that this is poor performance even for a 5400 rpm drive? The drive is mostly full; there are 50GB free. Would you recommend that I address this with Applecare?

So my BlackBook is horribly slow. I reformatted it, and I swear, it's actually slower now than it was before I reformatted. My RAM is maxed out. I'm not replacing my computer until MacBooks with USB are released. Is there anything else in the interim I could do that would boost my computer's speed? Would upgrading the HDD
I've got a 5400rpm HDD in my MacBook Pro -- see specs below. I really didn't think much of the slower speed compared to a desktop being a big deal back in the day, but now I'm thinking it is. It seems that many things across the board take a little longer to launch or load. I probably ruined my perception of speed by using my dad's brand new iMac, but I don't think my computer should trail his that much on just opening iPhoto or Safari.
The lateral move on storage space -- keeping 320GB but bumping to 7200rpm -- would cost me about $90. I don't think a 500GB 7200rpm drive exists. I also don't want to drop $500+ on a SSD because I really can't and I might as well buy a Mac Mini at that point.
New to the Mac world here,and really diggin my G4,which I got for free.But I need help with a frustrating situation. Here's the specs: Powermac Gigabit Ethernet dual 500 mHz G4,40 GB primary and 160 GB slave HDs,2 GB RAM,and a fresh install of Tiger with almost nothing downloaded,basically,a brand new machine. The issue: both firefox and Safari are sludgy on internet speed--watching Youtube videos,using Facebook,etc. It's not an ish with my router or modem--my older PC's blaze. it's really frustrating,and I've maxed out the RAM,so I want to know if an upgrade to a 1.8 or 2.0 processor will alleviate this problem once and for all,or if I have a boat anchor. Honestly,I don't do hardcore computing,just burn DVDs,a little photoshop,and play on the internet. There's no reason it should be so damn sluggish watchibng streaming video or simply writing on someone's 'wall' on Facebook.
I just replaced a 5400 rpm 320 Gb Western Digital (not the stock drive) with a Momentus XT in my late 2007 MBP, and I couldn't be more impressed. The eternal beach balls are gone. Granted, I've never had an SSD, but the speed boost from this thing is unbelievable. I didn't even do a clean install, just a restore from Time Machine. I didn't do formal benchmarks, but I did time my boot sequence before and after:
Old Drive Chime to Login Screen: 46 seconds Chime to launch Safari and open web page: 2:58
Momentus XT Chime to Login Screen: 22 seconds Chime to launch Safari and open web page: 38 seconds
So, the new drive can boot and open a web page faster than the old drive could get to the login screen. Altogether 2 minutes and 20 seconds faster. Not that I reboot very often, but it gives you some idea of how much faster everything is. I was so fed up with how slow my MBP was that I almost bought a new MBP for $2000, then I almost bought a 200 Gb SSD that wouldn't have had enough space for $340 (would have had to also buy an optibay and worry about losing hibernation or shock protection). So glad I just spent $130 and got a huge performance boost for very little money or hassle.

Ok, so I'm not even sure this would be worth doing but I figure it's easy enough to ask the question.
So I have a 2Ghz Core Duo MacBook and the RAM has been maxed out (2GB) so increasing that for a speed boost isn't an option. I was thinking that maybe upgrading to a HDD/SSD hydrid drive would give me a nice speed boost. I decided against a solely SSD drive simply because of the cost.
Currently I have a Samsung HM320JI in my MacBook (5400rpm, 1.5Gb/s), and was thinking of replacing it with a Seagate ST95005620AS (500gb 7200rpm HD/4gb SSD hydrid drive, 3.0Gb/s). What kind of performance boost would I see with that?
Also, with drives like that, they're meant for you to just install the OS (and maybe a couple important applications) on the SSD, right?

I am currently using MBP 13" Mid 2010, with 4GB RAM 1067Mhz, was thinking to upgrade to 8GB. My question is, instead of upgrading to 8GB with the same bus speed of 1067MHz, is it possible that this MBP supports 8GB 1333MHz? Other words, can this MBP supports bus speed of 1333MHz?

So I got my first laptop and decided to splurge and got a mac. Now it's great, works great, took me a while to get used to the OS but love my mac now. I use it predominantly for surfing and just basic but am also doing filmmaking. My friend has a macbook pro with 4gb ram and better proccessor, and we used that for film editing, but want to make upgrade mine into one as well (filmmaking laptop). I also may want to use it for gaming (starcraft), photoshop and just a whole bunch of apps and programs. Should I upgrade the ram, get it upgraded for me (get someone to put in the ram) should I even buy ram, is there anything I can do to make a faster processor? Also, my internet is kinda slow, anything I can do to speed it up? Finally, my mac sometimes lags when there's a lot off apps open so I was thinking of upgrading it. I don't have much of a budget (probably not even a 100) so I need something cheap, but don't want shotty second hand stuff. How much can I add, and what else can I do? On another note, Ive been using firefox as my default browser and have added a whole bunch off addons, any other programs I should get for firefox OR any programs I should get for my mac?
What is left for me to upgrade that will improve my MacBook's (2007 - Intel) speed the most? I have a 2007 MacBook that has the maximum amount of RAM installed already (2 Gig). I recently picked up a 17" 2009 unibody MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz, 4gb RAM, SuperDrive and a Samsung 1TB hard drive. The system did not come with the original hard drive and I don't have any other hard drives to test and verify that the new larger hard drive is the cause. I have tried a clean install of Snow Leopard, Lion and even Mountain Lion but no matter what my fans always running at max speed (5k+ RPM). I have looked at iStat and the temps of any of the components in the machine never show more than 42*C so the fans should never be running at full blast. Oddly enough smcFanControl shows 0* temp but fan speds for both left and right are always 5.5k+ and very noisy. Using HDD Fan Control I am able to get at least the right fan to run at a controlable speed but its silence is drowned out by the left fan that still runs on full blast. I have already done multiple SMC resets and PRAM resets with no change in the condition. These noisey fans are driving me insane! I have run every available update as well. Is there a chance that the hard drive or something elses temp not being supported or detectable by OSX is causing the fans to default to the fail safe constant high speed?!

I'm in the market for a new laptop. I am either looking for the latest Mac book Air or the most recent Mac book pro. I just want something that is reliable and efficient and quick.
I ran disk utility to repair permission, and the last line came up with "ACL found but not expected in Applications" anyone know what it means. If it finds something it did not expect, that I am worried what that is.
I am running ATT DSL Extreme 3.0 and have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I currently only get wireless in approx. half of my house, and the half in which I don't get it, will be needing it. So I am going to need to buy a range extender or wireless access point? I am a college student so I don't have a large budget, but I am looking for advice. Should I stick with Linksys and just buy one of their range extenders, or should I buy an Airport Extreme and hope the N signal is stronger? I am going to be sharing files soon when I get my Mac Mini HTPC setup going on in the living room to this from my other iMac's and MBP.
In summary, I am just not sure if it would be worth the extra $ for the Airport extreme or if I should just stick with the linksys.
I have a 320GB internal hard drive and a 320GB external. Until recently, the "free" space on my external was very similar to the free space on my main drive (about 50% full). But then in the last few weeks, suddenly my external is almost full, yet my internal drive is still around 50%.
All I've done in the last few weeks is add a bunch of music to my iTunes, but that was only 5-10GB of space. I find it strange that Time Machine is using so much more space, even though it does have all the incremental backups.2 questions:
1) Anyone know why it might be using so much more space?
2) Is the 'rule of thumb' that an external drive should be bigger than the internal one, because of all the incremental backups?
The On Line banking website I use, once signed in will not display any account info. It just freezes the screen and I have to exit out - the Bank says it is the latest version of Safari issue but - what could cause this web page freeze?

This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.
In Snow Leopard (and in Leopard before it), when you use the screen capture (to clipboard) key combination: SHIFT+(apple key)+Control+4 to capture part of the screen to the clipboard, it doesn't paste into many applications.
For example, using an OpenOffice document, the Edit...Paste menu is not highlighted (after doing a screen capture to clipboard), yet, I can paste the copied clipboard screen shot to Text Edit.
Since OpenOffice and other programs I've tried (including Thunderbird) do display graphics in their programs, why don't they accept the clipboard contents from the Mac screen capture program?
Thunderbird also will NOT accept a Mac screen shot clipboard "Paste".
What's going on here?
This lack of functionality breaks the idea of "cut and paste", which always works as expected in, gulp, Windows.
Snagit, for Windows, was wonderful, but I can't find anything to even come close for the Mac. (Of course, I'd be happy with just cut and paste working as expected for simple screen shots.)
I've been lurking on these forums for a few weeks now as it's time for me to come back to Mac. I've been a PC gamer for a long time, but used a Mac when I was a journalist. I want to start writing again and was considering a netbook, then realized the Mac is what I want again.
Question: I have researched several forums, rumours and checked the 'don't buy now' page for buying recommendations. However, my real question is regarding typical pricing when the "new hotness" is released. Is it typical for the price of the new models to be higher than the current pricing? If I go out and buy a MacBook Pro next week, I don't mind if it turns out that I could have saved a hundred bucks or two when they start clearing out the "old" models in refurbs, but I don't want it to end up that I could have waited a week and paid the same price for a lot more....................
When using Safari I have begun to notice this box appearing as I try to reach any website: "Safari is no longer responding because of a script on the webpage and then it lists what ever web page I have tried to reach. It then asks me if I want to "stop" the script or allow it to continue. I must "continue" it in order to reach my web page/ If I press "stop" it just keeps coming back and back and I can't continue. What is wrong with my computer or Sarari or both?
My PowerMac G5 fans hardly ever speed up. I mean they certainly never go full speed or ever close how they sometimes behave on start up. I never get the jet speed noise. Even when I am rendering a movie in FCP, I hardly hear the fans. Right now on idle, iStat pro reports CPU A being 58C and CPU B being 56C. Yet, the fans are still only 400RPM both CPUS Intake/Outake.
Does anyone have any tips to speed up an old iMac G4, 1ghz processor, 512mb of Ram and a hell of alot of applications and video files? (Running Tiger)The main problem is when i open video files and i have multiple numbers of programs open at once.
Anyone else notice a 1000rpm CPU fan speed increase on their G5 after the last round of system updates? My CPU's used to idle at ~120*f with a fan speed of 500rpm. After the 10.5.2 update they idle at ~89*f and 1500rpm. There is no perceptible noise change and I didn't even notice the change until I saw the cold CPU temperatures. I'm not worried about it, I'm just wondering if I'm alone or this is one of the system level .2 changes not massively publicized.
