if anyone knows of a program that allows someone to write a book/novel in what I think of as Book mode.I don't want to have it scroll down to the next page, I want it to show the writing in progress page by page; as though looking at the book while you're writing. I've search and cannot locate one that does this, does it by chance exist or am I stuck using Pages and turning it into a book after?

I'm looking for a good and stable text editor to write a book in!? I don't like Pages that much because it's only a mediocre layout app, but in my opinion a bad text editor. Word on the other hand is better with text, but its interface is cluttered with superfluous menus and items that distract me.

View 20 Replies View RelatedToday I got my Mac mini, and every peripheral worked with it immediately, except my speakers. They are the Creative Inspire T3100 2.1, and they worked earlier today on my windows xp machine, but they just won't show up in the System Preferences->Sound window.
I've searched for drivers, but couldn't find any. Is there something else I can do, or are they just not compatible with the Mac mini?
I've made two coasters today on my iMac 27" core i7.
I am using Verbatim DVD +R DL blanks and utilized Disk Utility to make one coaster (copy to a .CDR and then burned) and then used Toast 10 to write IFO files.
The DVD will "run" but looks and sounds like a satellite tv signal in bad weather - choppy all over the place. This happens on 4 players - two separate laptops, an xbox 360, and even the original iMac 27" I used to write the DVDs.
I have had no problems whatsoever writing single layer DVDs (even using old Comp USA blanks!) and playing them on aforementioned players.
Anybody have any success writing DL DVDs? If so, what brand of disc did you use? Did you reduce speed to 2x writing? Help - I don't want to create any more coasters!
Is it possible to switch off the mains when the Mac Mini is in sleep mode?
I've only had MBPs in the recent years and appreciate their low impact on my electricity bill very much - letting them sleep unplugged does make a difference. Now I'm contemplating a Mac Mini and while I know its power consumption is as low as with the notebooks (if not lower without display), I'm wondering if the Mini needs the current in sleep mode. I assume it does, but I'd rather know than guess.

So this past week when my mini hasn't stayed in sleep mode, it shuts itself down about a minute later after being in sleep mode. I haven't changed any of my settings in a year and a half, normally it would stay in sleep mode until i come back to it and logged on again. When it does shut down i just cannot power back on i have to unplug the adapter then replug it in for it to start up again. I've searched google and on here for possible ideas. I wouldn't think it to be overheating since I'm not running any applications when i put it in sleep. It might be the power supply since i have to do that process to get it to work again. Let me know what could be causing this or ways to troubleshoot this problem.

The Mac maker is constantly evaluating the market segments in which it wishes to participate and those which it does not. It's an application of love-hate methodology that inevitably produces its share of casualties. Take, for instance, the firm's petite line of headless desktop computers known as Mac minis. They retail between $599 and $799, catering to the once critical sub-$800 PC market. Conspicuously, it was that precise market segment in which Apple executives asserted little interest just months before introducing the first Mac mini at the Macworld trade show in January of 2005. Maybe management wasn't fibbing after all.
Since then, the Mac mini has been treated to a rather mundane life-cycle. It has seen just four updates since inception, one of which was so insignificant in Apple's own eyes that the company didn't even bother to draft a press release. Even now, the current minis' 1.66GHz and 1.83GHz Core Duo processors are a far cry from the silicon offered in the rest of Apple's PC offerings. And rightfully so, as the company has seen lower margins from the units, which never gained the sales traction of its more fully equipped iMacs and MacBooks. Some have gone so far as to call the mini Apple's bastard child; the neglected Mac that never was. At the same time, the history behind its creation and the reasons for its seeming abandonment are comparatively fuzzy. There is some speculation that Apple conceived the Mac mini under pressure from shareholders who wanted a sub-$800 Mac, but never really saw much in the design itself. I have succeeded at this in the past but no luck now. My MyBook is attached to my Mac Mini (10.4.11) but it doesn't announce itself on the desktop.FYI, MyBook blue circle is lighted but not swirling.

I recently purchased a mac mini which i use as a HTPC. A lot of the time i use VNC to connect to this machine when i'm not using it as a HTPC. The problem is that it always goes into some sort of sleep mode when i haven't used it for some time. I'm not to familiar with the ways in which a mac can sleep/hybernate but what i'm looking for is a way to let it sleep but still allow me to connect to it through VNC. Alternatively i'd like to be able to remotely wake it up somehow.

But everytime i do so, the resolution for the Recovery mode is to big and i cannot select continue to re-install it because it is not on the screen. I have lost my Os, i have nothing else to do. I tried calling apple and they just gave me options for support, which gives no help for me.

Is there a way to backup to time machine within recovery mode? My machine is really hosed and will not stay up for more then a minute or so before the beach ball of death takes over.
I was going to do a reinstall, but it will not unless I wipe the disk. My existing TM backup is corrupt, so I can't use that after the reinstall.
My (apparent) only option is to backup from within the recovery mode, but it (apparently) only gives the option to restore.

New to the forum and already I need some help. Here's my tale of woe-I purchased a mac mini on eBay and it came with no disks and I don't have the user name or password and apparently now can't get them from the seller. I did a google search and have tried getting into the single user mode (Command + s) and I end up on a page with a black background that runs through prompts and ends with a message that says 'initalization complete.' I have tried typing in the commands suggested in my google search (sh/etc/rc) and it comes back with a 'file unknown' prompt.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I'm sharing a PC keyboard between my mini and my PC, and I have my mini plugged into my TV and a computer display. When I use the display I need to have mirroring turned on and when I'm using the TV I turn it off so it goes back to the TV resolution.
Is there a shortcut or an app that I can use to toggle the modes from the keyboard rather than what I'm doing at the moment, which is jumping on my ipad and VNCing in so I can turn the mirroring on? I'd seen cmd-F1 mentioned, but it doesn't do anything for me.
When I select Sleep mode - nothing happens. Does not go to sleep.Now suddenly, when I select Shut down - the MacMini does not shut down but obviously working in a loop. I have to do a hard power down.

I have a late-2011 mac mini that quit entering sleep mode a few days ago. It won't sleep using the Energy Saver Preference Pane, either with or without the assistance of Please Sleep. It won't sleep using any keyboard command or selecting Sleep from the Apple menu. I've tried turning Bluetooth off, resetting the SMC, and resetting the PRAM all without effect. (Before this, I also tried repairing permissions and running Disk Warrior.)

I just got myself an mac mini and i really love it. Mostly use it for Plex as an media center, but here is the problem.After 1 hour inactivity it's set to go to sleep. and when i wake it up it work fine for about 10 seconds then it goes back to sleep, and i have to wake it up again for it to work.

I have an 2010 Mac Book Pro 15" - I've bought MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapter but when I try to connect it to my screen it does not work.
When I connect the cable to the computer the MacBook internal display do a flicker (turn on and right back on) so it defiantly "fell" something but the external screen does not show anything.
Also in the System Profiler in Graphics/Display both Intel and NVidia video cards show

Just got it today. When I sleep it, a quiet but audible noise kicks off that increases and decreases in intensity with the light on the front of the unit gets brighter and dimmer (so sort of sinusoidal). I've tried restarting it and resetting the SMC. The unit got upgraded to 4Gb ram and a 7200 320gb hard drive today. But I don't believe it's the hard drive - that makes a very low key monotonous whine that stops when I sleep the unit.
