Hardware :: Closing Book On Apple's Mac Mini?

May 24, 2007

Even while at the top of its game, Apple Inc. can seemingly find faults with just about anything, including a bit of itself. The Mac maker is constantly evaluating the market segments in which it wishes to participate and those which it does not. It's an application of love-hate methodology that inevitably produces its share of casualties. Take, for instance, the firm's petite line of headless desktop computers known as Mac minis. They retail between $599 and $799, catering to the once critical sub-$800 PC market. Conspicuously, it was that precise market segment in which Apple executives asserted little interest just months before introducing the first Mac mini at the Macworld trade show in January of 2005. Maybe management wasn't fibbing after all.

Since then, the Mac mini has been treated to a rather mundane life-cycle. It has seen just four updates since inception, one of which was so insignificant in Apple's own eyes that the company didn't even bother to draft a press release. Even now, the current minis' 1.66GHz and 1.83GHz Core Duo processors are a far cry from the silicon offered in the rest of Apple's PC offerings. And rightfully so, as the company has seen lower margins from the units, which never gained the sales traction of its more fully equipped iMacs and MacBooks. Some have gone so far as to call the mini Apple's bastard child; the neglected Mac that never was. At the same time, the history behind its creation and the reasons for its seeming abandonment are comparatively fuzzy. There is some speculation that Apple conceived the Mac mini under pressure from shareholders who wanted a sub-$800 Mac, but never really saw much in the design itself. It's almost as if the mini stood in direct contrast to Apple's fundamentals from the get-go...........

MacBook Pro :: Apple Logo On Display Blinks Randomly After Closing Lid

Sep 5, 2014

My Macbook Pro (early 2013, OSX 10.9.4) does not come to sleep mode – 10 secs after closing the display lid apple logo starts glowing (blinking) on a random intervals.

I have tried the following methods that HAVE NOT solved the issue:

* PRAM reset
* SMC reset
* Power Nap is disabled (with enabled I still get the same issue)
* WiFi is off
* Bluetooth is off
* no external devices connected
* no antiviruses or other programs that I would suspect to cause this
* sudo rm -r -f /Library/Prefrences/SystemConfiguration
* finally reinstalled OS X, and I still got the same issue

Surprisingly, if I enter to sleep mode via menu: Apple>Sleep, there seems to be no issue! I have tried changing pmset -1 lidopen 0 to validate if lid is preventing from going to sleep mode, however it has not fixed the issue.

I see this text in the Syslog:

I currently have data in both Entourage and Apple Address book. I am wanting to migrate over to Entourage and was going to sync the two programs to accomplish this. However before I do that, I need to understand how the data transfers. Does data from Apple Address Book overwrite data in Entourage? Is it added? Does the Entourage data overwrite the Apple Address book data? Does anyone know or know where I can get this information?

Applications :: Apple Address Book Functionality Expansion

Feb 26, 2009

Does anyone know if Apple is working on improving Address Book? It seems that not much has changed in a long time with the Address Book. It is a nice app for keeping up with personal contacts. However, do you think that Apple will develop it further to be more like Outlook, in terms of features that can be applied for business use? Please let me know if this is being worked on or if there are rumors. Outlook 2003 is turning to dust in the wind, and I am not that satisfied with Office 2007. I am hoping to move away from those products, but Apple's offerings pale in comparison to Microsoft's.

Hardware :: Mac Book Pro 15" Mini Display To DVI Adapter To Screen Not Working?

Jan 11, 2011

I have an 2010 Mac Book Pro 15" - I've bought MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapter but when I try to connect it to my screen it does not work.

When I connect the cable to the computer the MacBook internal display do a flicker (turn on and right back on) so it defiantly "fell" something but the external screen does not show anything.

Also in the System Profiler in Graphics/Display both Intel and NVidia video cards show

Display Connector:

Status:No Display Connected

Is it possible that the adapter is simply defected or there is other issues?

OS X Mavericks :: Sync Up Apple Contact Book And Exchange Contacts?

Jun 25, 2014

I have a bunch of contacts in my Apple Contact book but am using Outlook for Mac 2011 for email, contact management, and calendar.  I have read that you have to sync your Apple contact book to your exchange account rather than directly to the Outlook for Mac 2011 programs so you don't create duplicates (contacts coming from the Apple address book AND the Exchange server).  However, I can't find anything that tells me how to sync the Apple Contacts with my Exchange account.  I figure at that point once synced, my exchange account will push the new contacts from the Apple Contact book back into Outlook for Mac 2011 making everything whole.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Apple Mail Sends Out Emails When Turned On Adress Book Creates Groups Of Email Addresses?

May 4, 2012

I have had this issue with my address book for a while in that it creates new entries with just an email address as the actual entry and then hundreds of other email addresses from address book as this entry's additional email addresses.

At the same time I had an issue with Apple Mail that I thought was unrelated but now I am not that sure anymore. When I turn Apple Mail on, it sends out emails that look like an endless chain of responses (spam) to the same email that advertises  all kinds of stuff.

When I first noticed the issue I turned Mail off (a year ago). After updating to Lion I tried to use mail again but had the same issue and have not been using it since. But I appear to still find new entries in my address book all the time.

I ran some software (ClamX) but wasn't able to find any malware so far. I can't imagine someone hacking into my machine and doing all this my hand. For what?

So I am wondering whether anyone has had similar symptoms on their Mac?

Laptops :: Apple Mail System Address Book Vs The Dock Address Bookk

Recently converted IBOOK from just my wifes computer to both of us so it is now dual usuage with both of us signing in to our respective files/e-mail, etc. My side has a problem never experienced before. My apple mail system address book has all the names the dock address book does but is missing almost 2/3rd of the actual e-mail addressess. I have tried to redo the dock address book in hopes it would change the "internal" mail book, but to no avail. It id difficult to add a recipient to an outgoing e-mail via the dock address instead of the apple mail address book.

Mac Mini :: Finding Best Non Apple Brand RAM

Oct 23, 2010

I recently purchased the new mac mini from Best Buy: [URL] Unfortunately they had no option to upgrade the units RAM, so for now I am stuck with the standard 2gb.

My question to you would be my best option out there for cheap RAM. My preference would be either a single 4gb stick or to 4gb sticks to get me to 8gb. In full I am looking to spend no more than $300 dollars, but want to have the best performance possible. Unfortunately the Apple branded RAM is a little too steep for me at this time: [URL](8gb in particular), and I would hate to get two 2gb sticks and have to re-purchase everything again when I decide to go to 8gb in the future.

Mac Mini :: Apple TV When Playing Movies?

Nov 7, 2008

I always read posts of people who ask whether to get an Apple TV or Mac Mini to use as an entertainment hub. I just got a 2 ghz C2D Mini for free. I was excited because now I can put it in my closet and have it on at all times to stream to my Apple TV (Currently stream from iMac). But then I thought about it, what if I just plug the Mac Mini into the TV directly and play my content directly through it? 1. Apple TV has been great, silent, I don't hear any fans, and plays iTunes bought HD content without any problem. Can the Mac Mini handle this in the same way, and as silently? I plan on using a DVI to HDMI cable. 2. If I do use the Mac Mini, I also plan on getting rid of my DVD player, which is also silent when it plays DVDs. How quiet is the Mac Mini when it plays DVD movies? I don't need it to be silent, but I just don't want to hear it when I'm watching a movie. (I know I can try this myself, but I still haven't gotten the required cables and peripherals to try it now) 3. Based on all of the suggestions people here make when comparing Apple TV to Mac Mini is that the Apple TV is half the price. In my case, I was fortunate to have a Mac Mini land in my hands for free and I plan on either using it as a media streaming hub or plug it directly to replace the Apple TV. In this case, since money isn't an issue, which is a better option?

Mac Mini :: Apple Care And RAM Upgrade

May 26, 2009

I upgraded the RAM in my 2006 Mac Mini 1.83 a year or so ago. Thing worked fine until the other day. I purchased Applecare for this Mini in case anything went wrong. Something finally did-system will NOT boot, nor even power on, but the cooling fan runs at high speed continuously when the Mini is plugged in. Took it to a "genius" bar, and the guy was THE BIGGEST ASS ever. He FLIPPED THE HELL OUT when he found out I had opened the case. Took him 20 minutes to hunt it down, but he finally found some terms and conditions that state moding a Mini voids the warranty. I have had many people tell me, including Apple resellers, that adding RAM to a mini does NOT void the warranty. So anyway, I guess I am mostly pissed because the IDIOT DOLT at the "genius" bar knew less about computers than my 11 year old son and was determined to not give me the time of day because I had "sinned" and gone against Almighty Apple's wishes. The JERK had no interest in helping trouble shoot once he found out I opened the box. ALL HE DID was plug the stupind thing in, never even LOOKED inside it. Just put the top back on and plugged it in. I wish I could get the mini fixed, but they wanted nearly $400 for out of warranty service to which I politely declined. It had become a spare computer anyway. I own FIVE minis, TWO Macbooks, TWO iPhones, and at least FOUR iPods. I have spent in excess of $5,000 on Apple stuff in the last 18 months........
