My 1999 PowerBook G3 "Lombard" does not start when I press the power button. Is there a way to force it to start without it, or do I need to get a replacement button?
View 9 RepliesI received an old powerbook from a friend today and i plugged it all in and everything and the power adapter in the back and the ring lit up orange but when i went to turn it on nothing happened at all i didnt hear anything inside, it just didnt turn on. i really want to find the problem and/or fix it up.... I dont want to part with it as i need an extra laptop...

I checked Apple's website and found an article called Power Management Unit. It says to hit the reset button, wait 5 seconds and then hit the power button, but it didn't work for any of them. Does anyone have any ideas?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a big problem. For some months now I haven't been able to start up my Mac. It's a Mac PowerBook G4 bought back in 2002. It's a laptop. When I push the start button it shows me the grey screen with an apple. Then the screen turns blue showing the white and square icon with an apple, Mac OSX and the line for loading saying "starting Mac OS X..." When the loading sign is complete or almost complete it stops. Nothing more happens. It just stands there the blue screen with the loading line that looks pretty complete. What can be wrong? Some time ago I was asked the message: if I want to use the new way of starting up my computer, and I clicked YES, because I thought it was the normal software updating. And eversine then it hasn't been able to finish starting up. Can anyone give me suggestions of what to do? Or maybe tell me what is wrong? Maybe it has something to do with the "new starting up" message I said yes to, or maybe not.
I really hope someone out there can give me some advice, because now I haven't been able to use my Mac for months!
i hava an older powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.5.8. there is website [URL] which broadcast news and musics. the station is physically located in NY, and some unknown reasons, i am unable to get any radio SOUND from that site. The website works 100% well, without ANY problems whatsoever on ALL and ANY Windows based PC's, but NOT Mac.

I took it out of the computer and put it back in. (I did note that the plug looks a bit darkened but it does not smell burnt.) I tried it in a different outlet. Same thing. It won't turn on.I can't recall if this iMac is a G3 or G4 and I can't find my documentation to let you know. But I don't know that it matters which G it is. It is the old special edition grey iMac and has been working for us for many years.Is this the end for this iMac? Could it be something that is simple to fix?Â

my brother is having a problem with his unibody MacBook that he bought just a few months ago. It won't start when the power button is pressed, the sleep indicator light turns on and that's all. There's no start up tune, and nothing appears on screen. I had a similar problem with my MacBook Pro. I was told that the logic board needed to be replaced due to too much dust or moisture. Could this be the same problem? and has anyone else here ever had the same problem?

View 6 Replies View RelatedOk. so my MBP was working 2 days ago and I went to Fry's to replace the HD with a 640GB model thinking larger storage - win. Replaced in and the orange ribbon cable got disconnected between the keyboard and the logic board. Went frantic and after a visit to the Apple Genius, they plugged it back and thought i was fine. Nope, and now the unit won't turn on. Plugged it in and got the green light and battery charges, but the MBP won't power on. I made sure the HD was plugged in securely, the orange ribbon connected fine, and the power button cable was secure. The drive worked fine as I did a superduper transfer of the old data to the new drive the night before the crisis and it worked fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter 1.5 years of use, my hard drive suddenly failed. This was later confirmed by Apple Genius Bar. So I purchase a new SSD from OWC which was instructed to be compatible with my laptop model (MBP 13" early 2011). It arrived today and I did the installation carefully and successfully. However, after putting the back panel back in place I was unable to power up my laptop.
It was as if the power button is not working. Then I opened up the back panel one more time to realise that every time I click the power button (turn on), the fan started running, this can only be stopped by pressing the power button and held it (turn off). I tried placing my old hard drive and it doesn't work as well. I tried reset the SMC by holding power-shift-option but same result.

I went to turn on my Powerbook G4 (Aluminum 1.67GHz Low Res) today and when I plugged it in, I noticied a kind of crackling or popping noise. I unplugged the power adapter and tried again. I knew that my battery was dying before this (could only get about 30 min on a charge). But now I cannot start my Powerbook. Whenever I plug in my power adaptor, there is no green/orange light. However, when I take the battery out, I hear the Powerbook trying to start up (hard drive spin). But then there is nothing but my fans on full blast! They will not stop and there is nothing on the screen. I left it there for a good 5 min and nothing changed!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Mac Mini 1.5 solo that work very well for me and my son untill we updated the EFI 1.1 a week ago and never booted back up. I call apple and was told bad hardware maybe caused by update they send me to a Apple store to get it checked but there they said it was the power button not the flash. I had it plug in to the wall the hole time at home but when i took it there it booted as soon as he plug it in so he shut down and it did not boot, he unplug it for a few seconds plug it back no good with button but did boot a few second by itself. I replaced the button my self for a few hunder less then what Apple Was asking for (160.00 less). Still not luck. I feel i got screwed by Apple on this. Has anyone seen this and how it fix.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'
The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.
I was just using my powerbook G4 12" when it "clicked", the screen went black and it will not respond. the power cable light is on, and I've tried another battery, but it does not turn on! the little light on the latch button that glows usually, is not on. What has happened to my Powerbook????! I don't have applecare but I imagine I will be calling Apple this morning unless someone can help here
It made a loud (very loud) beep, while the screen was grey. The power button flashed in yellow, and then became orange, and then chimed like it usually does, and booted normally.
Now she is using it, it's like if nothing happened.

So I've got my mothers aluminium 12" Powerbook here because there were some troubles with it, it was freezing, made strange clicking noises on the left side (like 20 times every time she tried to restart) and eventually wouldn't start up anymore. So I guess there must be something wrong with the harddrive .
What is the best strategy to try to save as much data as possible? I have the original OS X 10.3.4 installation disks, I have an external hard drive to write the users data folder to. Do I just slide in the install disk while starting up (I mean I can't slide in the disk while it's off can I?) and will I be able to attach the external drive in order to copy the files?
I just aquired a PowerBook G4 (500Mhz) and it is dead. It will not turn on no matter what I try and when I plug in the power adaptor it glows a bright orange (almost red)...what does that mean?
I have had my mighty mouse for a couple months and it has worked great on my macbook. Just recently the middle button won't open up the dashboard and the two side buttons go through spaces instead of exposing all windows. In system proferences under mouse and spaces both are set for the middle button to open the dashboard and the side buttons to expose all windows but they don't do that. It could be an easy fix but I don't know what else to try?

SOLUTION: Battery had swollen slightly causing pressure on area below touch pad. Got a new battery (under extended warranty) at no cost; problem solved! It took the "Mac Genius" at the Apple store about 2 minutes to diagnose the problem.
I have a Powerbook G4 that I bought used a year ago. It has worked perfectly with no problems at all. Yesterday it started going to sleep randomly during use. It would wake up when the space bar is pressed and be fine for a while. This was happening every 10 - 15 minutes. Since yesterday it has gotten worse and worse, happening more and more often, and now it won't even stay awake long enough to click on something. Any ideas of what could be wrong??? I'm sorry I don't know what operating system or anything, I'm not all that Mac savvy.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a very old PowerBook that did have OSX running on it fine. Recently it has stopped working completely and when you startup it takes you to a blue screen with a question mark and a finder icon flashing on top of a folder. If you give it long enough it will just shut off. I have tried booting from a CD but I can't seem to get that to work. I boot up holding down the option key and it brings me to a window with a picture of my hard drive and a picture of the CD drive but when I click the cd drive and then click the forward button it merely acts like it's refreshing the list and doesn't actually boot from the CD at all. I've also tried holding down C during boot up but it ignores that and just goes to the same old flashing question mark and finder icon screen. The CD I am trying to boot from is the same OSX cd that I originally installed OSX on this computer from so I know it works.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just acquired a 1 GHz 15" Powerbook Ti. It is in good cosmetic condition except for a few dark marks from the keyboard on the screen. I can feel them with a fingernail, so I know they are residue from the keys. Is there any way these can be removed without damaging the screen? I have had very good results using toothpaste and a damp cloth on other surfaces, but I am leery of using even a very mild abrasive on the screen. I have even used newsprint on some sensitive surfaces with good results but if you make an error on the screen, it is either permanent or expensive. I suppose I could try in a corner but I know there are anti-glare coatings on the screens and I could make things worse. This is most noticeable when there is a light-colored area displayed right under the marks.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently inherited a Pismo, 400 mhz and a 6gb hard drive. Other than the tiny hard drive, the computer is in great shape and has a lot of service left in it. I was able to load Tiger on it, and it's working fine. I replaced the hard drive with a 100gb Seagate, but when I tried to format the disk,the new hard drive didn't show up during installation attempts. However, the volume was visible in the system profiler and the disk utility...I reinstalled the original hard drive, and that booted successfully so I guess that means I didn't damage the hard drive cable, which I had feared. Does anyone have an idea about this? So odd that that I could locate the drive in the disk utility but not at the installation screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Titanium powerbook was running when suddenly the screen went crazy, flashing colors and bars, then went blank black. Now can't boot at all, even from external drive. If I hold down the start key I eventually get a faint humming sound and the little "alive" light at the bottom of the display bezel flashes for a short time. If I repeat this it takes at least 15 seconds to happen. I have turned it off for a while and even removed the battery but nothing changes. Can't afford a new one, need help to fix it.
