Somehow my permissions on my home folder are not right. Ever since SL i've had problems with these somehow. I try to change my entire home folder to: my user: read/write everyone: no access. and i apply to all enclosed items, with me as an owner, but still many folders have the permissions: system: read/write system: read/write everyone: no access how do i fix this? i can't go through all the folders manually and switch them all... how did this get screwed up? Why are there two 'system"? repair disk permissions comes up with nothing. Should i reinstall everything from scratch?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just noticed on my main boot drive, in the sharing and permissions section. Their is a user named ''unknown'' This unkown user has read only permissions, and is grayed out. I have tried removing this user by clicking the minus sign. It has no effect. I cant change their privilege level either. I can do this with the other users listed. The ones that aren't grayed out. This (unknown) user is not listed with the rest of the users. Found in the sharing options, under system preferences. In fact all sharing options are turned off. I don't have a wireless network, nor do I run time machine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSometime in the past couple of days I lost write permission to my own home directory (/Users/yalla) - The attributes for my homedirectory are correct, but there are extended attributes as well, and I believe this is where the problem lies.
For Documents, Downloads etc, I am allowed to create/modify/delete files and directories, but under my pure homedirectory ~yalla I am all of a sudden unable to write, meaning I cannot create for instance a new .bashrc (not that I need to since I already have one), or create new catalogues.
I have tried both from Terminal and from Finder, and I am not allowed to create new directories under ny homedir. By going to Finder and going under "Get Info" for my homedir, I have gone to Sharing & Permissions and changed from Read Only to Read & Write which seems to fix it. I have however not been there before and made any changes, and I am therefore worried that by changing this to R&W I am fixing a symptom and not the core problem.

my MacBook Air wouldn't boot up. After booting from the Install DVD and running disk utility, it said that there was a problem with the internal hard disk drive and that it needed to be reformatted and OS X reinstalled. I am now trying to backup some of my files onto a 1TB external hard disk drive using single user mode.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Is it something I should heed and what to do in that case?
Every-time I repair permissions using the disk utility it says that the permissions are repaired, but then I click to verify permissions and it is all as it was before... What can I do?

I've checked the permissions for both the image and the folders, and I appear to have the correct permissions (see screenshot). I also did a permissions reset in disk utility and am still getting the error message. I am not the Admin on this computer.

Im using a Mac Book Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 11D50b) with Microsoft Office 2011.
I make an SMB connection to my Windows 2008 File Server using the "Connect to Server" function in finder. I am then prompted to login to the server and I use my active directory username and password. Once logged in I open a Microsoft Word Doc from the windows server by double clicking on the doc in finder. I edit the doc in Word 2011 for mac and then click save.
Once the doc has been saved, some (not all) of the inherited permissions on the doc have disappeared. This means that other users on my network cannot open the doc as they get a permission denied error.
I have tested this several times and it is very repeatable. Have been working in this environment for several months with no issues to date, this seems to be a new issue.

Software Update says that 10.7.4 is available for download. I attempted to install it and type in all my usual password info, but the system says:'The update Mac OS X Update can't be saved. You don't have permission.'I then downloaded the combo client and attempted to run the package. It stated that 'The installation failed. The Installed can't create the folder "/var/folders/z7 etc.'Not exactly sure what is happening. I've tried repairing permissions, and it did not work. I am the only user on the account.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday when I turned on my iMac, it went to the login screen and then something odd happened. I saw a second account on the login list that i never made. It is called "Other: and has an icon with lines and spheres (like a networking icon). Also when I click on it, it asks for a name and password.I logged into account and went straight to System Preferences ->Accounts and there is no "Other" in the list of accounts there on the left.just my account. Is this a virus or have I been hacked? Or is this is bug?

I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn fact I'm getting a grey screen when I just try to restart. Have run Disk Utility (which always finds Permissions errors - even though it appears to make repairs. Also, after erasing my hard disk and recovering my user data from Time Capsule). When I restart I don't get beyond a grey screen (with moving cursor). I can't install the update as obviously I need to restart in order to start the install process.

I have Macmini 2.1 2007 year
After install 4 GB RAM (work only 3 GB) i install MAC OS X 10.7.3
Now i joined Macmini to Domain Active Directory 2008 R2. Joined via standard tools.
Macmini have a local user.
How i can migrate all settings, all data local user to Domain user?
When i used MAC OS X 10.6.8 i can joined to Domain via Likewise Open, and after i can use Likewise tools for migrate.
But now, in MAC OS X 10.7.3 i can't joined to domain via Likewise... and use migrate tools.
I'm attempting to recover from the popular iCloud mistake "Deleting the wrong calendar". I am able to locate the Folder located in the Library of my Time Machine backup, and when I attempt to "Restore to" "Desktop" I receive the following error:
This particular file name is actually located in one of the folders, in the Calendar Folders, and is just one of the many events I would like to restore to my calendar, and the copy operation aborts when I click OK. Each time I retry this a different .ics file is the issue.
Investigating file permissions reveals nothing pertinent that I can see, because I am not attempting to cross any boundaries e.g. I'm in the user account and searching in the same user account, I wish to import Calendar Folder to.
When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer. I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.
For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password. I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.
I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account. It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.
why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"? The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.
