Intel Mac :: Purchase A Powerful Desktop Computer To Run Large Datasets In STATA, SAS, And R?
May 30, 2012
Need to purchase a powerful Desktop computer to run large datasets in STATA, SAS, and R. This would hopefully last me for a few years. I'm considering purchasing the iMac 27 inch model, and upgrading all the RAM and hard drive space to max outthe specifications. Is this a better option than purchasing a lower end Mac Pro?
I sent a jpeg to my dad's computer via his AOL e-mail account. His OS is 10.4.11. When he opened the jpeg, it completely overflowed his screen--he had to scroll horizontally and vertically to be able to see everything. Why is this happening and how can it be fixed so that the jpeg can be viewed in normal size on his screen?
Info: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Memory: 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I am playing around with HD video and have a very large Quicktime File (12.5GB) that froze my computer while rendering. I need to delete it. (CRASH: screen freezes and dark line slowly comes from top to bottom and once entire screen is slightly darker, a post in the middle pops up and tells me to turn off computer by holding power button).
After a lot of trial and error, it seems the problem is that the computer can't handle the massive deletion. Unlike a lot of other similar issues on this forum, this is a single file and not hundreds, so i can't delete portions at a time and be done with it. I have run through all my ideas and need help on how to delete this file from my computer and have come up with two possible ways:
1 - Split this video into smaller files. I dont know how to do this: I have SPLIT-CONCAT but that duplicates (then splits) and does not actually split the original. I tried "replacing" the video with the same-named smaller file and it crashed the computer.
2 - Change preferences on this computer somehow to allow this massive deletion. I tried a force empty through terminal and it did the same crash. I dont know if there is a preference (disk manager) or otherwise to get rid of this file.
I have a 27 inch desktop. Upon turning the computer on within seconds the fan comes on. Then it goes to a high fan. Then it goes to a black screen. Then it shuts off. Then if you click the mouse it will come back on. This cycle repeats itself every 5 seconds. Only one time in the past month did it turn on normally and run for me.
i recently purchased a gift card for the mac app store for $300 to buy Final Cut Pro X. I submitted the card's code, and my computer accepted it, however, when i went to buy the app, it sent me to my billing information. After confirming everything, I clicked "done" and it sent me back to the home screen with a loading wheel and it hasn't stopped since.
When my macbook pro resumes from sleep the desktop opens too large for the screen size. Yes, I'm running LION. Another forum has advised to switch between users which works great for a temporary fix. This issue seems to be on-going.
I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.
I recently bought an iMac and I was wondering why installation disks are not supplied. If a re-install is necessary, how can it be achieved without the original installation disks? or is there a new way of achieving this.
I have set my zoom to default in safari and the font sizes in Preferences should be set to the default. In most websites I visit that have a navigation bar at the top, I can't read even read the word within the button. The font is abnormally large. When I use the zoom font only feature it doesn't change much. When I use the regular zoom commands, all the graphics zoom like normal, but any the font of any of the links remains huge. So large that a lot of websites are unusable b/c all the links run together. This issue is on an 10.7 using safari 5.1.
I have just spent many hours editing and importing songs in a large playlist in iTunes. I want to back those up so I don't have to do it all over again. I talked to tech support. She was nice in directing me to do a 'Time Machine' back up. It died after about 30 minutes.
I restarted everything and tried to remember her directions. Time Machine started and backed up about 66k... yes 'k'.. and it projected it would take about 4000 days to finish backing up my 1.6 or so g.. yes gigs. I don't trust do everything backup processes.
How can I do Time Machine in a reasonable time? How can I back up an iTunes playlist on a jump drive or a usb hard drive? She sent me 3 e-mails that were supposed to tell me just how to do a back up. The e-mails just linked me to the same Apple support pages.
Does anyone know if Apple plans to create a bluetooth version of the larger keyboard? I have the small, bluetooth version - but it's too cramped. I'd much prefer the larger one.
The download desktop icon went up in smoke and I can't get it back...before when I downloaded a file from email I could go on my tool bar and access the downloads...now I can only get them in finder. How can I get the download file icon back?
So the other day I tried to send a large file through the Mail app to a friend. I realized after clikcing send that the file was indeed too large to send since my Mail froze in the attempt of sending it. I used force quit to get out of Mail and opened it again, and then clicked the x button when it started to send again. But then the message was still in my outbox and in my drafts, and Mail would try to update my inbox and drafts but just continue loading. I went to my outbox to delete the message, and when I did a notification popped up that said "The message could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash—On My Mac". The operation couldn't be completed. File exists". Now whenever I open Mail it's the same story, where it attempts to send the message, and then everything's trying to load but never does.(I went to iCloud recently to send a message, and the only remnant of this action was a draft of the message without the file, which I deleted.)
I am looking at the previous gen (2008) mac pros and comparing them to the current gen Xserve, and in terms of CPU and RAM, the xserves don't seem to have any premium in performance...Is that the case ? It would seem that if one were trying to achieve the highest possible CPU speeds and ram configurations, one could just as easily do that with a mac pro vs. an xserve. Is it assumed that the next generation xserves will match the 2009 mac pros and continue this trend ? It would be nice if there were some options on the xserve that were more powerful than the desktop systems...
I do not currently own a mac but am in love with the OS and really want to buy one. Im not really strapped with cash at the moment and I dont want the mini or an imac. I did some searching on ebay and found a mac pro priced at $1100.
I have a Western Digital 2TB USB Hard Drive that Ive been using perfectly for a couple of years on my MacBook Pro. A couple of months ago I bought a 27inch iMac and started using it as my main computer. So I had that hard drive connected to my iMac.
I started to notice that during large transfers (be it many files or 1 big one), usually into the Gigs, I suddenly got a warning message saying that the Hard Drive was inappropriately disconnected. It doesnt appear in Disk Utility so I have to manually connect and disconnect the drive in order for it to show up again on the iMac. I tested it again on my MacBook and the same thing happened.
Another problem:
Sometimes it will dissappear from the iMac without a warning message, it just doesnt show up. (Usually after long periods of inactivity). I then have to manually disconnect and connect for it to show up.
I am getting an imac but am stuck as to which one. I would like to know from users experience if the 3.06 i3 processor is powerful enough and can easily run software such as photoshop and flash. Also i would like to know whether they run games ok and software such as steam, which is quite laggy on pc.
