Intel Mac :: Maxing Out Ram In Mid 2010 I7?
Apr 10, 2012
just deciding i'd liek to go for the full 16GB of ram in my imac. its a mid 2010 i7 2.8GHz quad core. what i'm wondering about is should i take it in, or is it that big of a deal to just do it myself? i've installed ram in my macbook before, but never not my imac. I have the stand 4GB in right now. and it's not quite as smooth as i'd like it to be.

Currently my Macbook Pro (15") has "2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM" in it. I think it will take a max of 4 gb. What's the best memory I can get(i.e., Kingston, etc)? And should I expect an upgrade to noticeably improve speed, etc.?

Is anyone out there planning on maxing out there 2008 3.06 imacs with 6GB orf 800mhz DDR2 ram, in the same way as another poster uses 6GB in their 2.8. In fact - would it work with the 3.06 machine?

I made a bit of a stuff up and bought the wrong drive for a friends iMac.I incorrectly took his specification down as being a 2011 iMac when it was actually a 2010. This meant I specified a thunderbolt drive (Promise Pegasys R4) thinking the iMac has thunderbolt. I was wrong!! It only has mini display and Firewire 800.I see some thunder bolt to firewire docks are due out soon but is there a product that will allow me to add a thunderbolt interface to the iMac?Something along the lines of a PCI type card or a Firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter?

I have an iPad 32GB WiFi and a MacBook Pro as well so I was trying very hard to justify myself in getting an 11" MBA but ending up talking myself out of it. The 13" MBP is perfect for my uses. It's already lightweight and portable as it is. After playing with the 11" in the Apple store, I was impressed on how light it was. This no doubt blows away any netbook or any notebook in it's weight class in terms of size and performance. However, the MBP's battery life, hard drive space, and processing power OUTWEIGHS the reasons of dumping my 13" MBP for the Air. Also, I have it hooked up to a 21.5 Inch HP monitor at home and it's good enough to use as a main computer at home, and light enough to take on the road.
If I needed to lookup something quickly in bed or around the house, that's where the iPad comes in. If I needed to send a quick e-mail, my HTC Evo is already great at doing that. If I didn't have a 13" MBP or even the iPad, I would have most likely went ahead and purchased the MBA. Just now at this point, spending another $1000+ or getting rid of my MBP doesn't make much sense... yet.

I read a lot about that issue but I found replies about imacs that wont turn on. But my Imac after the problem, turned on one time.
My issue is that my imac was working like a charm. The day before yesterday, at night, i had an automatic update of firefox and after i switched it off normally.
The day after, at morning, I tried to turn it on but it was behaving like it was not attached to the electricity.
I started to read and I found all that solutions so I did the following:
1. Tried other cables (for power supply)
2. Tried other plugs (in different rooms)
3. Put out the ram sticks and cleaned with a blow dryer the sticks and the space inside the imac so the dust goes out.
4. Tried the reset of SMC with no success as it could not be turned on
I tried everything and after I leaved the mac alone, (3-4 hours) and after i just clicked the button and it was on. I left it all night long switched on so that i save my data and I found it on, this morning.
So this morning I did everything to reset the SMC. I put it in sleep mode, restart it, shut it down, put out the cable for 15 sec, put it back, wait 5 sec, but it wont turn on again. I know that there are a lot of responses for the same issue, but I didn't find one that the imac turns on periodically.

I have a 2010 iMac that won't start when I press the power button. No chime, no fan running, nothing. I tried unplugging it and plugging it into a different power source which made no difference. I made sure the power cord connections are good. We recently had an 8 hour power outage at my house and this is the first time I tried to power the iMac up since the power outage (it was working fine prior to the power outage). Of note, my husband's iMac started up fine after the power outage.

I've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?

I've been reading about others attempting and succeeding upgrading their late 2009 model graphics card. I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the iMac Mid 2010, ATI Radeon HD5670 (512MB)? While the current card is not bad itself, it still lags in certain aspects (i.e. gaming).

Recently my iMac display goes black in the middle of using it. Initially I thought it froze up and I had to force it to reboot. But after this happned a couple of times I realized that I could stil hear the hard drive working and my peripheral lights (keyboard, etc) were still on. On a hunch I put it to sleep (Option-Cmd-Eject). After it goes silent I can press a key and the display comes back up and everything is normal (for a while).
It's now been doing this regularly for the last 3 weeks. Sometimes three or four times a day this occurs. When the screen goes black nothing seems to work except the sleep-wake thing. I've tried the screen brightness keys too - but that doesn't work either.
My software is up to date (Lion 10.7.4). This is a Mid 2010 iMac 27" with 12GB of RAM and the ATI Radeon HD5750.The regular software that I have running is:
Chrome
Forklift
Light-room 4

I purchased one of these (model MC511LL/A) on Ebay. It has not yet arrived. The seller posted a canned Ebay description of the model touting the 2 Thunderbolt ports, yet Apple's official specs page does not show this model as yet having Thunderbolt, which does not show up in the iMacs until the 2011 models. Is it possible that some of the mid-2010 models shipped with Thunderbolt ports?

I don't really know which one to choose actually. First of all, does my iMac supports SATA III? If not, maybe i'll buy a new iMac.If it supports SATA III then i found the Corsair Force 3 480GB 2.5" SATA III SSD for a reasonable price. Do you recommend that? Does all the SSDs on the market work with mac without problem? I also want to upgrade my 4GB of 1333MHz memory to 8 or 16. There are 2 empty slots right now. Can you please make a recommendation about it too.

It reads commercial CD's fine but any CDR shows up as a blank CD. This happens with multiple brands and the CDR's play in a car stereo and are read by other computers. I can burn blank CDR's just fine. The problem is recognizing the content once they have been burned. I have seen this issue posted as far back as 2008 on some boards but no solutions other than replace the superdrive. I find it hard to believe that I would have a bad drive already given Apple's reputation for great products and the age of my computer especially since the warranty just expired in October.

I use my Mid 2010 iMac for virtualizing routers. I noticed that with the 4gb of RAM that was already installed in the iMac was not enough. So, I did some research and found out that, my iMac can hold up to 16gb of RAM. I did some more research and found out how to replace the memory in my iMac. Then, I went to Micro Center and bought 16gb of RAM and brought it back to my apartment. Now, I powered off my iMac and unplugged the power cord, flipped the iMac upside down and unscrewed the three screws that were holding the memory cover on. After removing the memory cover, and pulling back the memory tabs/flaps, I shined a light down in the memory slots and found one memory slot that looked damaged. I was not completely sure, so I went ahead and removed the old memory by pulling hard on the memory tabs/flaps, and the memory was unseated.
I remove the memory and replace it with four, 4gb sticks of memory. Once I powered on the iMac, a memory beep sounded off. So, I unplugged the power cord from the iMac and removed two of the four memory sticks out of the iMac. The two sticks of memory I removed was out of BANK 0/DIMM0 and BANK 1/DIMM0. BANK 0/DIMM0, is the one that is damaged and my hardware warranty has expired. I bought this iMac damage, and now it won’t support 16gb of memory. What should I do? By the way, the other 8gb of memory in the other two BANKs are working.

My mid 2010 iMac i7 will not boot past the apple logo? I'm running 10.7.3. I have tried restoring from TM backup from recovery mode (worked the last time this happened) however upon completion it returns to the recovery screen? I made a disk of Lion when I downloaded the first time (followed same instructions sourced from numerous websites) which does not seem to work when i set to start up from this disk, just gets to the grey screen and flicks between the apple logo, a folder icon with a question mark and the circle with line through? Now I can't eject the disk either, a message appears that system can't eject and to make sure all applications are closed? Not sure how to go about closing these applications without being able to start the system? When I tried booting from the Macintosh HD I got a message that the boot cache partition was faulty? I have ran disk permissions etc all ok.

My 2010 2.93 12-core system will be here in a few days and I just thought of something important that I haven't had to think of in quite some time.
Surge Protection and Power Conditioning.
So I have a few questions for you guys, i'll let you know what I'm running and you tell me if you think im protected or if I need better protection ( recommendations would be in order )
Mac Pro 2.93 12-core
4 HDD 7200 RPM
ATi HD 5870
30" ACD
2 Powered speakers and a powered sub
All of them plugged into a Furman ML-8 Power Conditioner [URL]
What do you think? Should I get a different protector/conditioner? I've looked around and I saw this issue before on here, but it was antiquated information.
