Intel Mac :: 2010 27" Making Chirping Noise During Normal Use And Sleep?
Jun 12, 2012
It happens more frequently when the computer is "thinking" but still chirps somewhat often when it is seemingly idle. Maybe its the processor or HDD?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Last night I was putting my macbook to sleep while I was ni the other room, and came back only to hear the fan or hard drive going 100 miles per hour it seemed, so I opened it to see if anything was active and nothing was it was just making a ton of noise. Any one know what it coulda of been? No software update was taking place?

I've had my Macbook since 2009, and since this morning it's been making a chirping noise, possibly from the optical disk drive, roughly 4 times per second. It stops for about a second every 10 minutes, but other than that it has been repetitively chirping all day. I haven't dropped it or anything like that.

My iMac (27'', mid 2010, Core i7, OSX 10.7.4) recently makes some trouble with its DVD drive: The drive often makes horrible noises like a shredder. In this context the disc sometimes doesn't eject. Only Rebooting works. More and more frequently the drive hangs, the connected application (e.g. iTunes, Auditri or Handbrake) hangs and also Disk Utility. Rebooting doesn't work (white freezing screen), only shutdown and complete startup with clicked Trackpad to remove disc. Is it a hardware or software error? The iMac is still qualified for AppleCare. Should I make a repair request to Apple?

I purchased a 21" iMac a couple of months ago. Today it started making constant buzzing/humming noise. It's not really loud, but it is noticeable and annoying after a while. It stops if I put the computer in sleep mode or turn it off, but it starts back up the moment I turn it back on again. It sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the screen near the speakers. I have tried adjusting the brightness and volume, but to no avail. I also tried lifting the computer off the desk to see if it was just vibration, but that did not make a difference either.

My 20.5 inch 2.7GHz iMac is about a year old and has recently started making a low humming/buzzing noise from the top right corner, near the SuperDrive bay. The top of hte iMac feels quite warm when it makes the noise and usually stops if I hold my hand on top of the computer. Is this something I should be contacting AppleCare about?

My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?

iMac makes normal startup after had been put into sleep..One strange behaviour can be observed with iMac Late 2013.At the end of day the user puts the mac into sleep. On next day pushing the power button is necessary to activate the mac.
The main point is that iMac starts up as it was shut down at the previous day(this is conclusion based on screens shown after mac activation).Â
User expectation is, that on next day when activating it the mac show screens as it was leaving sleep instead of showing screens typical for normal startup (after hard power down).Â

The sound system on my iMac keeps chirping like a cricket. This happens every few minutes and occurs both on internal and external speakers. It started a few weeks ago and I have made no major changes in the meantime. What is this and how do I make it stop?

after months of going back and forth I finally went with an entry level iMac which is perfect in every way. I think... I don't remember the start up time taking almost a minute to cycle from the blank gray screen to gray screen with the Apple on it. Tuesday and yesterday it started up much faster (at least 30 seconds). ere's my some of the hard drive info:
WDC WD5000AAKS-40V6A0:
Capacity:500.11 GB (500,107,862,016 bytes)
Model:WDC WD5000AAKS-40V6A0
Revision:05.01D06
Serial Number: WD-WCAWF5070764
Native Command Queuing:Yes
Queue Depth:32
Removable Media:No
Detachable Drive:No
BSD Name:disk0
Rotational Rate:7200
Medium Type:Rotational
Partition Map Type:GPT (GUID Partition Table)
S.M.A.R.T. status:Verified
The only thing I've done since Tuesday is add two songs in iTunes to test the cd-rom drive. I just ran the extended Apple Hardware Test and everything is fine. Given that my 20" refurb died within 3 months and I returned 2 iMacs prior that one, I'm a little nervous. Is this normal for a Western Digital hard drive to take nearly a minute start up from gray screen to grey screen with the apple?

I wonder if this is normal:
My iMac 27" i7 with a 2TB Hitachi disk seems to vibrate. It is so strong that it also makes my desk vibrate a little. If I hold tight on the desktop, it stops. However, the noise/hum is clearly audible when I put the iMac on the floor, for example.
Apple is happy to replace it, but am I too picky? Anyone else with the same?
(FWIW, I'll describe the noise as if you mount a hard drive in a cabinet, and it isn't really fastened/isolated well enough.)
I tried the smcfancontrol and checked the fans, and its not them, the noise is constant even if I set them to max or min. And it disappears completely when the disk has spun down.
My Macbook Pro, Macbook, or other apple hardware I got with a HDD does not make this kind of noise.
How silent is your iMac compared to your macbook/macbook pro?

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro. For the past 6 months or so, it has been making a whirring, clicking, chirping noise. It does this constantly, no matter what I'm doing. I replaced the hard drive, but that didn't help. The sound appears to be coming from the rear of the computer, near the top. (where the power cord plugs in).

I have had my Macbook Pro for about 3 days now and there is a weird noise coming from the inside. Mainly when I tap on the bottom right of the laptop I can hear a clicking noise. I can also hear it when I tilt it from side to side and it sounds like it is coming from the disc drive I was wondering if this was normal?

Yesterday my PB from 2004 started to make a noise like an angry mosquito. Is it the hard drive dying on me? This is just a take-along-when-I-need-to-be-mobile computer, there's nothing there that needs to be backed up. But I wonder what the noise means.
