Intel Mac :: Too Much Time Watching Beach-balls, How To Eliminate Them
Apr 18, 2012
This a possible duplicate or similar message posted a few minutes ago. I'm not sure it posted and it's not showing yet. I have an iMac 20 inch Late 2006 MA589WA I'm running OX 10.7.3
It has Intel Core 2 Duo
1 Processore, 2 Core
L2 Cache 4 mb
Memory 2mb
Buss speed 667
The memory seems to be about 80% filled according to a chart I saw earlier. I back up everything to Time Machine and suppose I could clean the disk of all but applications making sure I had properly saved all my records, letters, papers written and songs and see if that does it but I'm much rather find a simpler fix from the community if any of you have similar problems and have solved them.

I upgraded to snow leopard, loving it, got back close to 20 gigs of hard drive space. But when i go and click on items on the desktop, its beach balls for 10 seconds on average, and then continues to operate fine. This is especially noticeable in safari when hitting command-t to open a new tab. I went out and bought a g-drive one terabyte to clean out my hard drive. I would like to do a clean install, but would like some further input as to any new ideas or if it happened to you. I usually have open itunes ical and neo office. I have the 2.4 MBP Feb 09 stock currently.

All I do is to add/remove columns on a spreadsheet using Excel 2011 and I see beach balls every time. I'm using Ultimate 13" Air and only running iCal and Excel concurrently. Activity monitor shows excel using 0.2% of CPU. This puzzles me alot.

as of yesterday evening my Mac is currently unusable so I'm hoping someone out there has a solution for me.
I've been having problems with my iMac 24" 8,1 model (using 4 GB RAM with ca. 87 GB of space available on the HD, Leopard 10.5,8).
During the last few weeks I've been experiencing long delays and lots of spinning beach balls, usually whilst working in Photoshop CS2 (on an admittedly very large file). I assumed it was the file size that was the problem, and that when I was done things would be fine.
However, yesterday on trying to save my work, the computer really struggled and after an age - around 20 minutes - I got a "failed to save" warning for the file, saying there was a problem with the scratch disk (unfortunately, I didn't read this warning very closely).
Just after that I got a warning from Time Machine that latest backup had failed. Then the Mac froze showing beachball, and force quit didn't work so I did a hard reboot and was presented with the dreaded flashing question mark for the first time.
After several restarts it found the startup disk but the problem has now become chronic - Photoshop freezes after opening, Firefox too, even Preview. Beachball each time and impossible to force quit, requiring hard restart and most often getting the flashing question mark...
So far I have tried the following: reselected my HD in Startup Manager, verified the disk and repaired permissions in Disk Utility (everything fine), also Repaired Disk booting from Mac OS X Install disc (again HD fine) and reset the PRAM.
I don't know if it's of importance but I noticed in the Activity window Kernel Task is using 1,7 GB of RAM - is that normal? Also, whilst using Safari I got the beach ball and CPU for the program shot up to 95,5%!!
Short of erasing and reinstalling OS X I don't know what to try!

I have had a few probs lately with some spinning beach balls & a few Kernel Panics. Today, I did a Repair Permissions (as that is what most advise doing first when dealing with most issues) & the RP report found a bunch of errors (all seemed to be Java ones) that it stated as repaired. However, there were three others that are different and the first was: ACL found but not expected on "private/etc/apache2/users". Repaired "private/etc/apache2/users". Is this now OK? The second & third are "Warning" ones which has a novice like me very concerned as I do not know what they mean/are or what risk they pose/damage that they might be doing - they are:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconfig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writeconfig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
can someone tell me what this means, how bad it is & how it can be fixed easily by a novice? I have also run an app called "Clean My Mac".

I am running a MacPro 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 8 GB RAM and OS 10.6.6 that is connected to an AirPort Extreme connected to a Westell DSL modem. Lately I have been experiencing strange behavior that I can not solve. When I first start up, Safari and Mail generally launch and work properly. But after a while, from 10 minutes to an hour, I get strange behavior. In Safari, pages take a long time to load- with a spinning beach ball for several minutes. Or they don't load at all. In Mail, I can't get new mail- a get a message that I'm not connected to the internet. When I go to System Preferences and check the Network, it says I am connected.
Rebooting usually solves the problem, but I am forced to reboot once an hour or so. Also, other programs show strange behavior- either failing to launch or crashing. This happens frequently with Photoshop Elements 9 and occasionally with Pages. I am also running a PowerPC Dual 2.3 GHz using OS 10.5.8 off the AirPort Extreme that runs fine and experiences none of these problems. Both machines are connected by ethernet cables to the AirPort Extreme.

If I were to connect a Mac Pro to a TV via the DVI output and using a DVI to HDMI cable, could I still work on the computer at the same time while the movie is being played on the TV. I want to rip my whole DVD collection to the HDD.
I know that I could do this with AppleTV but I want to be able to go directly from the Mac to the TV and be able to play movies in 1080 vs. 720.
Also, am I right to assume that the video quality would be the same through the Mac as opposed to a DVD player?

My kids made a video, edited it in iMovie and burned it to a CD. When we put the cd into our macbook pro and play it through QT Player the video pauses and stutters and the audio is not synced up to the lips, and that's if and when the audio does come on. The CD is fine as it does play as it should on the pc desktop that we have. What are we doing wrong?

I get the spinning beach ball (SBBOD) after a few minutes of operation. The hard drive is indexing as well. I tried booting the computer in Safe Mode and I get NO beach ball and the computer seems to be perfectly fine. I recently upgraded my hard drive about 6 months ago. I am not sure if this is a hardware or software problem. I also tried running the hardware test, but I downloaded lion via the App Store and pressing "D" at boot up doesn't do anything. I am about ready to erase my hard drive and try to re-install my info from time machine. Unfortunately, I haven't done a back up in quite a while.

It doesn't matter what application I use, be it Photoshop, Safari, Chrome, InDesign... or whatever... when I go to "Save" or "Open" and get a file browser window, I get the dreaded spinning beachball. It takes at least 60 seconds or more before it stops spinning and I am then able to save, open or choose files (whatever I happen to be doing at the time).
I've checked my Energy Saver prefs. Nothing is set to "sleep". I've already checked disk permissions (OK). I have NO external HDs, only 2 internal factory HDs. 12 GB RAM, 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. One day I just started having this issue and I can't figure this out. It really slows down my work when I have to "wait" a couple mins every time I want to "Open" or "Save" or "Choose" a file from the file browser window. What the heck gives here??? Please, am I missing something? I have no USB Devices attached, but I am on a network in my office.

I am trying to watch videos on youtube with safari. When I play a video, it seems to lock everything up until the video is fully loaded. My internet speed on any other website watching any other videos is perfectly fine. Anyone have any ideas as to why Youtube videos are freezing and not functioning right when everything else is?

I have just bit the bullet and migrated from my slow and clunky PC to a beautiful iMac
But I do have one question that is probably very simple. Previously with Windows I was able to play a series of TV shows in a row continously by selecting the files from the hard drive and selecting play in windows player - this way I could watch from my bed without having to get up at the end of every show to select the next
With Mac is there a way I can do this? As I have tried initially but it just opens all the files in different windows, rather than playing them in the order.

I need to delete all of the "sub-contacts" I have for someone, so that when I start typing in their name in the "to" field, only one name comes up, as opposed to all of this persons different emails.
We have switched from one email to another at my work, and the address that initially pops up is the old one. I tried deleting the contact from address book, but it did not change anything.

OKay so the other day I was on windows live messenger (for mac... on my mac) then I left my computer to go to the bathroom and I still had a convo open, when I came back the person i was talking to said that I had sent her this:
(or something like this....) happynewyearpics. (That's all i remember) The friend I was talking to asked me what it was, I wasn't thinking and I opened it, it led me to some weird website about a quiz to win something.. but then later at 3:30 the other day I wasn't online, or logged in at all but my other friend said that I wasn't even online and that i had sent her this link. I'm pretty sure that I have a virus and I have NO idea how to get rid of it or if I can get virus software.
