Intel Mac :: Spotlight Not Looking Inside .csv File?
Jun 19, 2012
I have a file, myfile.csv, that contains the string qqabc. A (Lion) Spotlight search for the string qqabc fails to return myfile.csv in the results. Turning all checkboxes on in Spotlight preferences didn't help. Reindexing the internal hard drive didn't help either. When I changed the extension to .zzz, the search worked. How can I make Spotlight return myfile.csv in the results? EasyFind works, by the way, but I have a reason for wanting Spotlight to work.

I have a PDF library located inside a bundle. Spotlight does not appear to search inside this bundle even if I trigger the search from inside it. I need it to index the PDFs to allow searching for key words in the text of the PDFs. If I remove the PDFs from the bundle Spotlight works fine, but I then loose some functionality of the software that I am using. how to make spotlight do this? I am running Snow Leopard.

I managed to successfully hide the file: cat picture.jpg hidden.rtf.zip > picture2.jpg
results in a picture (picture2.jpg) that is the size of the sum of picture.jpg and hidden.rtf.zip. I presume this means that I am successfully putting hidden into the picture.I can open picture2.jpg, but I can't figure out a way to access the hidden zip.

How can I make spotlight show the directory location of a found file?Â
Previous Mac search engines would show the directory location of a found file. This feature seems to be missing from spotlight in Lion. Am I using it correctly?

I decided to attempt the same thing on a mac.
I managed to successfully hide the file:
cat picture.jpg hidden.rtf.zip > picture2.jpg
results in a picture (picture2.jpg) that is the size of the sum of picture.jpg and hidden.rtf.zip. I presume this means that I am successfully putting hidden into the picture.

Am I alone in having difficulties with this application? I cannot seem to locate any file when I use it. I type in part of the file name and rarely find what I want. If I try to use some part of a document's text, it is just the same. I am also finding difficulties in compressing files but have put this on another thread to avoid confusion I am using Tiger 10.5.5

I am pretty new with Mac and I am trying out my new macbook pro. I'm trying to get to know it. And a while ago I was trying the Spotlight feature. I have a file under User/Library/Preferences/ that is called [URL] I just thought I'd try to search for it on Spotlight if it can find it. I typed myname123 on spotlight but no results were found. Why? Are there any specific strings that should be entered if the search string is between a filename?

Yes, it finds things, BUT doesn't tell me WHERE on my computer I can find it.
Yes it opens a folder etc, BUY WHERE IS THAT FOLDER? I've wasted more time looking for "the folder" it found than I care to mention.Â

For some reason when I use finder, I see all related files, but it doesn't have a "pop up" where the path to that file is. I have gone into spotlight preferences and can't seem to find a button or setting that allows me to see paths.Â

I have folders of Adobe ActionScript (.as) files, but I've noticed that spotlight/search ignore the contents of these files, even though they are text-based. How do I configure spotlight/search to examine the text within these files?

Every time I do a spotlight search, intending only to get filenames (that's what it says in greyed out lettering in the search field), the Spotlight results show content as well with the result I have sometimes 1000s of items listed when I just want results containing filenames only. The search results are useless? How do I get Spotlight to search for filenames only? This is how Search used to be in Classic and for a while in OSX.Â

This morning I found a file I was looking for then went back to find it again and spotlight will not locate it. I have re-started my computer and get the same results. I am hoping someone knows of some app that will so what spotlight is supposed to do. Another thing that bothers me is that I cannot tell where the file actualy is. If my recollection is correct, in the last OS X version, if you just held the cursor over the spotlight item for a few seconds, the location would be revealed. This no longer works?

I can type a search word into Spotlight. It will show results. I then open let's say an Appleworks text document from that search. Then I close that document and retry the same search: Now that same document will not show up in the search results for that exact word and it WILL NEVER show up again in search results. In other words after a file has been found and opened in search once , it will never appear in search results again for the same word.Â

About every other time I start up my Mac I get a status bar on startupt (before the login). It takes a bit longer than normal to start up but eventually it does. However, on these occasions that my Mac acts like this I also encounter two (at least) other issues. The first is the volume control has a crossed-out symbol, and hence there is no sound whatsoever—internal speakers or external. Further, and perhaps more troubling, is Spotlight does not work; I attempt to search but I only have the option for web results.Â
I also notice some general slow down and it sounds like the Mac is always working on something (fans aren't running full blast though). This led me to open Activity Moniter, which revealed and absurd amount of Wired memory (about 6 GB out of 8). Â
What is going on here? I've tried resetting my PRAM and booting in Safe mode; however, I am having the embaressing problem of not actually accomplishing those tasks (I think). I hold down the correct keys but my bluetooth keyboard doesn't seem to be responsive early enough for the keystrokes to register.Â

I'm getting a new iMac 27" (1TB) this week and was wondering, which 2TB hard drives Apple installs.
I have read that they use WD and Seagate, but which models exactly? (caviar green or black) If you could post the infos of your iMac that would be .
Also, I want to upgrade to a 2TB drive. I know, I have to stick with the brand that comes with my iMac, because of power issues. However, I have also read that Apple uses a special OEM drive and an upgrade won't work (heat problems remain, a special firmware is necessary) Is that true?

How to run the Mac OSX partition as a virtual machine in VMware on bootcamp? There are instances where I sometimes need to fetch a link or something on OSX, and would rather not reboot just to get it. I know for OSX that VMware allows me to run my bootcamp as a virtual machine, which I really like. I'm basically trying to do the opposite of this an run OSX as a virtual machine inside of Windows 7. Does anyone know how to do this? I can't find the option to set this up.

I see a great deal of debate between the quad i5 and i7 but nothing between the two i5's. I'm not super techy so I really can't tell what the benefits or disadvantages there are between the two. In fact, I didn't even notice that there are two different ones until I was poking around on apples site.
Specs:
3.6 i5 with 4mb lvl 3 cache and HT and TB
-or-
2.8 quad core i5 with 8mb of lvl 3 cache with TB but NO HT
*you can build identical iMacs both with the 5750 (5850m) and the 3.6 is only 50 bucs more.
