Occasionally, this iMac starts, and it will say "safe boot" in the login screen, and I have not done anything to make it do that. I do not have a sticky shift key, as far as I can tell.

My computer has a kernel panic problem. And I'd like to fix it by booting as safe boot. I hold the shift key after the tone, and release it when the apple and loading gear appear. But, the bar that indicates that safe mode is loading never appears. It'll just boot on regular boot.

I've been trying to partition my drives and install Windows on my late 2012 imac. I last adjusted my partitions using disk utility and now receive the prohibitory sign on start-up and cannot boot up in safe mode; pram reset; type commands in single user mode. Running on Mavericks OS.

Did a Shift - Command-V and the black screen showing all the startup steps appeared and it all looked good except: AFL Alart Sockwed cant update and INIT Reboot transmit failed. All else looks good. I have tried this 3 times and never go past that point. Then the screen turns off white like it does when it starts normally before the apple appears and the last time the screen went black.
I have tried starting with just the Shift Key and computer starts up but not in safe mode. I have tired starting with the OS X disk and the C key and it will not recognize the disk.I used the #1 disk since the instructions are printed on the disk. Did not work so I tried disk 2 and I get a menu to start the OS or tools. If I click on either one the screen goes white and stays that way.
computer starts fine and provides a login window, and then the desktop screen with screen saver pictures in perfect color. As it goes through starting programs it starts the same programs that is had open when the computer originally crashed. Even when I close them, before it locks up again, and I am forced to restart the same programs open up to the same place. Its like the computer is frozen in one location and will not go beyond that point. Eventually the screen turns white and sometimes black and sometimes gray.
Tech support thought it was the video card, put a new one in but did not fix the problem and then said it was not that but that it was the monitor. I said that did not make sense since the monitor and desktop icons and pictures are beautiful and clear. They then said it was the inverter board on the monitor and Apple only replace the whole thing. I purchased an inverter board and replace it. No change. The tech person said that the computer works find without the monitor connected - I will see if that is correct next. Isn't that a more systimatic testing procedure then trying parts to see if it works? Oh I did do the complete long hardware test. Took about an hour and it passed! Isn't this strange?

My lovely pro has decided that occasionally it doesn't like the idea of starting from sleep and sometimes won't boot up.
The fan runs at full blast (I think it's the CPU fan), a black screen and the power button on the front glows. I don't have any external drives attached, no stat programs running in the background except little snitch. Generally I close all programs before I leave my desk. After I hard reboot, I get a "do you want to send this to apple?" dialogue, with the errors pointing to the nvidia 8800gt. I don't have the full detail of the error box, I'll post it next time it happens.
I've zapped the pram, run the apple diagnostic and unplugged everything to reset the SMC or whatever it is.
About 1/2 of my wakes from sleep, and about 1 in 4 times when starting exhibit this.
I turn the machine on and the apple icon comes up and the thinking gear comes up but It won't go anywhere else I can't even get into safe mode.

I'm getting the gray screen when I startup. I tried using the install disc to repair the utility, but it said it cannot be repaired. I had to use a plug-in mouse instead of my normal wireless mouse to get the startup disc out on a restart. I want to now startup in safe mode, but holding down shift during startup with my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Do I need to have a plug-in type keyboard for this function to work? Can you backup files using safemode?

So as the title says when I boot up my iMac, on occasion, it seems to have the "Updating" Status bar, then the mac boots normally, then the sound is disabled. As I said though this dose not happed all the time but when it dose the only way to fix it is by rebooting the iMac once again. My 2014 21" iMac powers itself down after about 10 seconds while trying to startup in safe boot mode. I'm not even sure why it is trying to start in safe boot mode. I shut it down after a power outage while plugged into an APS UPS. I'm guessing that since I interrupted the auto shutdown it is restarting in safe boot mode. Either way, I get a grey screen with a big apple and a progress bar. The progress bar gets to about a tenth full and the power just shuts off.Â
I've tried starting up while holding the alt key to select the Macintosh HD. The same thing happens.

Been having probs w Mac Pro w Lion seeming to hang on shutdown/restart. I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD. Â
I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".Â
I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.Â

My Imac(Intel) occasionally switches itself off. To bring it back to life I have to unplug it from the mains for a couple of hours. On plugging it back in the fan immediately starts up very noisily but nothing else happens. By holding down the on/off switch I turn the machine off. By pressing the on/off switch in the normal start up manner everything is OK.

After numerous attempts at booting into safe mode while holding shift on start-up, I tried entering sudo nvram boot-args="-x" in terminal to force it manually. Turns out my mac didn't like it that much.
Now whenever it starts up, it hangs on the gray screen for a bit and turns off immediately, never booting.
I have a Imac PPC with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram. I am running leopard 10.5.8. Recently i woke the PC from sleep mode to find a blue screen with only the cursor working. Using the internet, I determined how to get the PC booted in safe mode. I have used all the disk utilities at my disposal along with onyx and cocktail to try and fix what I believe is a startup problem. I hae booted the PC in single user mode and tried the fskc codes, which i believe is just the same as the disk utility. Based on my computer all permissions are correct and there is nothing wrong with the HD. The PC still will not boot normally. I have even done an archive and re-install of Leopard.Â

I'm trying to start up in safe mode, per a recommendation from Objective Development, for a Little Snitch upgrade. I'm following these steps perfectly, and I see no indication that I'm running in safe mode. Of course, I've never seen safe mode, so I'm not sure what it looks like, but I'm guessing I ain't in it because I never see the "Safe boot at the login window".

I have a mac book pro 17. I have 2 logins. on the main one it takes a long time and only the top bar appears. the normal icons dont appear. when i move the mouse i just get the spinning wheel and i stays like that. you can not operate anything. you have to hold power button to turn it off.Â

- if i sign in as another user in safe boot, things seem to work. i suspect something is not sitting right in the main sign in.Â

I woke up this morning and my iMac G5 (w/ Leopard) was frozen. I restarted it manually, but it would freeze on a blue screen without loading the OS. It can start up fine in safe mode, but that's it! I've tried repairing permissions and zapping the PRAM - any other ideas?
What can I do in Safe Mode that might fix my comp? I haven't recently installed any applications, and I have all "open at login" items turned off.
