OS X :: Document Cannot Be Read / Invalid File
Mar 26, 2009I was just finishing writing an assignment for school. I always save while writing. Well after I was finished I saved and wanted to save as .doc. I pressed "save as" and suddenly pages did not respond. I tried to force quit but it wouldn't do that so I restarted. I thought since I already had saved it it would be okay, buy when I try to open it now I get the message "Document cannot be read, invalid file."

Jun 22, 2012I'm having some trouble with my Macbook. It's running on Leopard 10.5.8. I recently tried to partition my hard drive and while doing so it prompted me informing me that there was an 'invalid node structure'. I could then no longer proceed with the partition. I had planned on updating my OS to Snow Leopard. I wanted to partition my internal HD, so I backed up some files on my external HD. I basically wanted my interal HD to run smoothly with a new OS while minimizing the space used. Now I've come across this issue where there is another message being prompted that says, 'invalid sibling links on hard drive'. I found THESE steps on another forum that informed me that this might restore the hard drive back to a readable/functional state but that didn't work either:

Boot off the OS X CD (reboot, hold C while booting).The installer will load up, go to Utilities in the menu and run Terminal.Type df and look for the drive that has your Mac system mounted---you'll have to unmount this. On my MacBook Pro, it was /dev/disk0s2.Type umount /dev/disk0s2, replacing disk0s2 with whatever disk your OS lives on.Type fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2. If you umounted the wrong thing, it will complain that you can't repair a mounted drive. Go back and umount the right thing and repeat this step.
I then stumbled upon a few different forums mentioning something about Disk Warrior. I was wondering if THAT would resolved this issue. Honestly, I don't really want to spend much money on buying this but I WILL buy a new hard drive if I ABSOLUTELY need to. I was just trying to see if I can troubleshoot this before I decide to throw in the towel and buy a new hard drive or attempt to try out this Disk Warrior thing.

Dec 21, 2009I'm trying to install Virtual PC on my G5 powermac running Leopard, but the capture disk doesn't show. I've contacted Microsoft and they said that they cannot help as the last supported version of VPC 7 is when it is installed on Tiger. I then tried to downgrade to Tiger but when I insert the installation disk that is for my G5 I get a prohibitive sign and it won't let me go any further.
Has anyone got any suggestions on what I can do. I just want my Mac to be able to run VPC 7 so that I can run some essential (for my work)PC software.

i have installed virtual PC on my mac powerbook G4 and then tried to install XP Pro into virtual PC, I got to the point of agreeing to the terms, it says to press F8 to agree or ESC to cancel, arrows to page down but for some reason it will not work. so basically none of the entree bottons work. any ideas ???????

Feb 29, 2012This is the setup: I have a MBA (13", 4G, 250GB) runing with Lion (upgraded from snow leopard). I need to install windows XP in VB (yes, it must be XP). I have already installed it in my iMac and had no problem at all. While doing it on my iMac I only had to select my cd/DVD unit to run the installation CD and it all worked fine. As we all know the MBA has no cd unit (and no, I have no Superdrive) so I can't use the same path. I've tried accessing it through the remote disk, but once I get into the pop up window, I can only search for .iso, .cdr or .dmg files. The next step I have taken is to create an image of the original CD. I have done it by: going to Disk utility, "new", chosen the CD, create a DVD/cd master... that created a .cdr document. Then through the Terminal I did convert this .cdr into a .iso using hdiutil. Finally I have run VB and... it keeps on telling me <<Fatal: No bootable medium found! System halted.>>

Apr 13, 2012I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro, just that you guys know. For my programming work with the robot (C/Assembler) I will need either Windows or a Linux OS. This is why I'm asking. I really hate Windows and I don't want to install that and besides, Linux is a much better option for compiling my code, etc..Should I use a virtual machine or should I install Linux (Ubuntu) on another partition of my internal HDD.
I will need to install quite a lot of stuff and I'm not sure whether my 4GB of RAM will be enough to run Ubuntu on top of Snow Leopard using a virtual machine. I will need to use another old computer or my parent's desktop for loading to compiled files onto the robot (my IR Tranceiver has a RS 232 connector). I have another old laptop which we commonly use as a 'tryout' computer, but for the most part I want my MacBook to be the computer I use because I cannot take that old (and really heavy) laptop with barely working batteries and super-laggy Win XP to school, where I will do a great deal of the work. So I definitely want Linux on my mac.The partition can be small, I will only need about 15-20GB of space (including the Linux).

May 27, 2012Any ideas on this...my Imac (2.16 Ghz. running system 10.6.8) has bee having difficulty in starting up (lost of hard drive noise and crawling to start up) lately and I have Drive Genius 3 as a diagnostic tool, so I ran "Repair" and "Verify Permissions" and came up with the message" Permissions Error : ARDAgent. app....I gathered some info on these boards to use the app Pacifist (V 3.0.2), to re-install the ARDAgent and it should clear up the problem...followed the plan, ran Verify Permissions in Drive Genius 3, which said it was repaired...I then ran Verify to confirm and came back with Verify Failed, Invalid Directory Count, should be 38 instead of 39, and should be 47 instead of 45...But am getting the same results when I run Drive Genius 3 which is the Volume is repaired, but the Verify has failed.... A real stumper...any ideas? Also just up graded to Firefox 12.0 which is when the slowdown started to appear

Intel Mac :: Unable To Boot - Invalid Node Structure
Apr 10, 2012It is a 2008 intel iMac that had worked fine for the last four years until lion. Everytime there was and update or I rebooted, my Mac would freeze at some point of the login. A permission repair or just repair disk would solve the issue an everyone and a while, a restore from backup. Recently my Mac started to slow down to the point it froze for several hours and force quit would never open. I held the button and since then I have been in trouble. The repair permissions had a ton of errors but successfully repaired. But when I repaired the disk, it's hit a couple of errors but ultimately failed right after "Invalid Node Structure" that error has been consistent every time I have attempted a fix and it failed. I tried restoring from a backup to no avail. Then I wiped the drive and installed Lion (after a convienient 5 hours download) an it booted. I tried using it but it was extremely slow, let it sit over night and came back to it frozen. I had assumed it was slow due to indexing but after 12ish hours this didn't solve the issue. I clicked the apple button and it took a while to finally show up an restarted. Fro
There is wouldn't complete the boot. Froze at the apple logo or white screen with spinning mouse. Left that for several hours and stayed there. Tried repair and same issue. "ivalid node structure" redtating aftet that it just reboots and turns off a little bit after the chime. I have tried everything I could find on different forums without any success. I tried single user mode with the fsck commands and that failed also. I downloaded lion and made a recovery flash drive from another computer. I have since installed several new installations of lion after an erase and repartition. I took it to the apple store and they installed a fresh install of lion and it worked for a day then slowed down and froze. I would like to try everything possible before claiming the hardrive dead. I forgot to mention I have done PRAM resets in between the events I described as well as the SCM i think reset by unplugging. I have left it unplugged for over 12 hours, also have taken out all peripherals minus keyboard and mouse.

May 1, 2012My wife's macbook pro started shutting down by itself randomly, so i performed Disk Utility Verify Disk and found these errors: Invalid volume file count(It should be 800651 instead of 800653)Invalid volume directory count(It should be 191005 instead of 191003)The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed. As i do not have the Mac OS Leopard disks physically with me, I target-disk started her mac on my mac, and use my mac to run Disk Utility on her hard-disk, and repaired the disk without problems.
However, this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. After the 1st time, i figured something is causing it, so i checked this forum, and found that for some, the Blackberry Messenger app causes programs, so i promptly uninstalled it fully (including associated system files) and this problem didnt come back for a while. Or could this be a sign the hard disk is physically failing soon? It is out of warranty now. We have regular Time-machine backups. We are actually kinda waiting out until the new line of macbook pro's come out..

IMac (Intel) :: Hard Drive And Time Machine Invalid Node Error?
Sep 3, 2014I have a late 2006 iMac, which I know must be at the end of its life now, but at the weekend my main internal HD developed an error, and it wouldn't boot, even from the recovery partition.
I managed to find my old Snow Leapard disks and ran Disk Utility on my HD (when it actually saw it) and the error it came back with was "Invalid Node". After trying many things, I had to reformat and reinstall from my Time Machine back up, which went really well.
However, once all restored it tried to do a backup and it failed. I then went into Disk Utility again and it found the same error on the Time Machine drive.
Therefore, my question is, could the back up process have copied an 'error' to my back up? Or is this a fault somewhere else (Disk Management etc) that I need to watch in case it cases errors with my other drives that have important information on?

Sep 1, 2008I've been asked to find a virtual PC solution for some of my users.
I've been looking on the internet and it looks like Microsoft Virtual PC 7 does not support Intel or 10.5.
I'd really rather run a virtual OS than have to reboot all the time as they will need the Mac 95% of the time, so I'm leaning towards Parallels instead of Bootcamp. I'm not aware of any other options - can anyone advise?
Some users currently have PPC G5s, which Parallels does not seem to support, but I'd rather upgrade them than mix and match software.
