Whenever I shutdown or sleep the computer, the sound does not work when I start it up or wake it up. The startup sound does not play, and the audio controls are not greyed out. Audio does not work through headphones either. Plugging in and unplugging headphones does not solve the problem.Â
Sometimes a PRAM reset will solve the problem, and an SMC reset always brings the audio back, but only until I shut it down or put it to sleep again.Â

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a 2010 Mac Pro with a Bose Companion 5 USB sound system. Everything works great and as expected except when I restart the Mac Pro. The sound settings switch off the Bose speakers and reverts back to the internal speakers of the computer. I have to go in everytime and reset it back to the Bose sound system. I never had this problem using Mavericks.Â

So my mac was acting up, no sound from iChat and Spaces wouldn't function properly.
So i restart, the Mac pro gets o the normal point of turning off the display before the spin up sound, but instead this ticking sound occurred. This had a repetition at about ever 3 seconds.
So i quickly held the power button and shut down the Mac pro. I powered up the system and all seemed fine.
Has anyone ever ran across this before?
I am on Mavericks 10.9.3 (brand new MB Air 13.3). I configured Mail with my IMAP accounts and it is able to send and receive mail. The problem is that the sound stops working after a while. When I sleep and wake the computer, at some point, it no longer makes the whoosh when sending a message. None of the other sounds work either. I have updated everything very recently.

My iMac will not start up when shut down, or awake from sleep. To get it to start i must turn off the power, and turn it back on, then it starts up and runs fine.If i Restart it, it switches off, and will not power back on. The machine still works great but is begining to be a pain in the back-side cycling the power every morning.I have done an SMC Reset, and that did not change it.
I have also added a new user, and when i logged in as the new user, it did restart a couple of times (cannot remember the exact amount) and then when i switched back to my normal account it restarted fine... i assumed it was fixed... but after that it's gone back to it's old painful self..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI verified the hard disc on my mid 2010 3.06 ghz 10.7.3 iMac this morning to be greeted by a box telling me this disc was corrupt and that I needed to restart while holding cmd+r until the apple logo appears then to repair the disc.at this point I would like to say that I am posting this from said iMac and it boots up normally and runs fine.but, when I start it holding cmd and 'r' let go at the apple logo the cog starts turning below the apple for about 10/15 seconds then the apple is replaced with a circle with a line through it (the cog keeps on spinning below it) it seems like it would just sit like this for ever - after about 5 mins I held the power button, turned it off, turned it back on again and just left it to boot up normally - no problems. thought I would try it again - turned it off, held cmd and r exactly the same as before......Â

My iMac 27inch, Mid 2010 2.93 ghz i7 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3, doesn't shut down or restart properly. Once I choose the option in apple menu it goes into white screen with a wheel spinning, it freezes there. The only to proceed is by manually holding the power button. Checked and repaired all disk permissions in standard and recovery mode, reset PRAM and SMC, did couple of cleaning procedures of cache and relative, did a whole virus running procedure. Cant figure out what has happened. It happens after I operate computer after turning it on, but it does shutdown and restart if its done straight away after turning it on without opening anything. I tried to monitor maybe it some software that makes act like that, but didn't find a link.

Just did an Apple update to my iMac. Is it recommended to to a restart after the update has downloaded? By the sounds of the prompt afterwards "The update was done successfully" or something like that, sounds like it is not.

I have a computer on a local network using a manually setup static ip address, but every time I restart the computer it reverts to a different static ip (one that is assigned to another computer) causing a conflict on the network. I have tried trashing the system config files and resetting up the network settings, but the static ip still comes over. I have also tried setting the ip through single user mode using ipconfig, but it still resets every time I restart.

With new HD installed I am having trouble restarting from my external drive to copy data to my iMac.
After selecting external in sys prefs the restart goes only as far as white screen with apple logo.
My new HD is 500 G, OS X 10.7.4. The external is a WD 250 G using SuperDuper, OS X 10.6.8.Â
Basically I bought an iMac last October, 21", 4GB standard manufactured settings ram etc. After a few weeks every time I quit an application and go back on it, it returns to its old settings. Whenever I remove a bookmark from the toolbar on Safari and restart it, it returns to the old settings, when ever I restart the computer the dock and background changes towards its original settings. This is starting to get really annoying, and I don't know what to do and I have installed all available updates.

The Mac doesn't properly restart to install software update (along with other updates), instead it goes directly to the log in for different users.

I've been having this problem for a little over a month now, I've spent countless hours researching, and every possible solution that I've come across hasn't worked for me. I've reset my PRAM, I've repaired my disk and permissions multiple times, even by using the Disk Utility on my Recovery Partition. Â
Basically, about two months ago I (regretfully) changed my account shortname by going to System Preferences>Users & Groups, right clicking on my account and changing the shortname in the advanced options. Everything was fine, but now when I restart my iMac, my desktop wallpaper changes back to what it was on the day I changed my shortname, any apps that I add to my dock are removed after i restart, Safari opens up the guide that I was using to show me how to change the shortname, the "Users & groups" window even appears as soon as I log in to my account. Basically, my iMac seems to be booting back to the day I changed the shortname, now any changes I make aren't saved.Â
Everything keeps restting back to the way it was on the day that I changed my shortname. Since then, I've changed the shortname BACK to what it was the first time, hoping that would fix the issue. Â
Also, I'm not sure if this is normal, but if I go to "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist", and check the permissions, "everyone" is on there twice:
It also does this for every other .plist file in my preferences folder.Â

It doesn't appear to recognize that I'm holding down command-S when it boots. I'm thinking maybe it's because the keyboard isn't wired to the computer. This is a 6-month-old iMac running 10.7.3.Â

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu. The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer. This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure. .
