MacBook Pro :: Moving Files To A New Folder?

Feb 5, 2012

I was wondering how come I can't move my videos to a new folder? For example in my 'Downloads' I have a few episodes of The Office and I can't move them altogether into a new folder...?

OS X :: Automatically Moving New Files On Desktop To Folder?

Feb 22, 2010

I've been using Macs for awhile, and am growing to love them for sure. I'm starting to dabble with Applescript, and things like that... just delving into the magic of Apple products, and I'm coming up with a few questions, one of which I'm posting here!

I'm interested in leaving three icons on the desktop at all times. My "Macintosh HD" icon, a "Lost&Found" folder and a alias to a server I use consistently. All other files I want moved into the Lost&Found Folder on a consistent basis, and I want to delete these files weekly, or bi-weekly. I'm unsure as to if I should make an Applescript for this, or if there's a utility out there to do this. I have looked around a bit already, and haven't found much.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Automator - Moving Files To A Newly Created Folder

May 18, 2012

I am trying to set up a folder action to do the following... When a file is added to the "images" folder a new dated subfolder would automatically be created, and the file would be moved to this new dated subfolder.

Here's what I have so far (which I'm sure is way off base)

1) Folder action receives files and folders added to "Images"

2) Filter finder items - Find files where ALL of the following is true: Kind is ANY

3) New Folder - Name is "_" Where: "Images"

4) Add Date or Time to Finder Item Names: Add Date to folder name

5) Move Finder Items: This is the step that I'm stuck on. I don't know how indicate the newly created folder in step 3

Another question I have is how to make automator check to see if there's already a subfolder with the current date and put the file in that subfolder instead of creating a new subfolder with a duplicate name.

MacBook :: Moving Over Old Files?

Feb 1, 2009

I am thinking of buying a new MacBook (Pro). I currently back up using Time Machine and wondered when restoring when I first turn on the Mac, do I have to restore EVERYTHING or can I select what I want? Such as music and photos.

Also, does the 7200RPM hard drive in the pro create lots of noise and heat compared to the 5400RPM version? If I bought a 7200 RPM model and put it in a MacBook (Apple don't let you do this yet) would it be safe? Which models do Apple use?

Is the Pro big when carrying to school? Portability basically?

Some of you might have seen my previous posts, but judging by what I will use the laptop for, do you recommend 2.4, 4GB MacBook or the stock 2.5 Pro with upgraded hard drive?...

1. I use light bits of Photoshop CS3 Extended for school that work well on my original 2.0 Core Duo MacBook.

2. Light video editing, such as iMovie, maybe Final Cut.

3. Most importantly, music creation. I'm only a beginner on all of this, and the laptop should last me about 3 years at the least. Everybody I have spoken to about the missing FireWire on the MacBook - including people at apple - has advised me that the gap between USB and FireWire is pretty half and half. As a beginner, recording voice, guitar, keyboard, maybe drums... will the lack of FireWire be too much of a problem?

Applications :: How Can I Stop Moving Location Of Music Files On Macbook?

Dec 29, 2010

I have a 46 gig itunes music folder that I had moved from my PC to a NAS several months ago. I set up itunes to have the music folder on the Macbook that I use day-to-day point to the songs on the NA. The songs link to the respective folder on /Volume/Music/Artist/Album/song The NAS has been having issues staying connected so I just moved all new songs (I had kept at least 44 gigs on the PC as a backup when I did this 6 months ago) from the NAS to the PC. I finally figured out a way to reliably connect to the PC (running Win7) from the Macbook via SMB. The songs are now located on Volume/iTunes Music/Artist/Album/Song My question is - how do I instruct itunes that the songs are now located on the PC rather than the NAS? Should I just 'delete' all files in iTunes and then add the PC's folder? Is there a better way??

ITunes :: Keeping IOS App Folder Structure When Moving To New Mac?

Jul 2, 2012

I am trying to move my itunes data over to a new mac. So I moved the iTunes media folder to the new mac, but none of the mobile applications are (which are placed in the mobile applications directory in the itunes media directory) are displayed in iTunes on my new mac. I already changed the iTunes media folder in the preferences. What I managed to do is transfer all purchased items from my iPhone in iTunes, but now each iOS app appears 2 times in the mobile application folder. The next problem is that if i now what to sync my iPhone on the new mac iTunes completely messes up my app folder structure on the iPhone but I would like to keep my structure. How can I move copy ALL of my iTunes data from the old to the new mac correctly?? I don't know why apple made it so hard to do such a thing.

I keep my iTunes Music Folder on an external 320gb HD. I'm about to move it to a 500gb HD. Rather than go through the steps of changing library location and then consolidating the library, can I just do this (all w/iTunes turned off):1. Copy entire iTunes folder, incl. Music folder and library.xml, etc. from old to new drive2. Disconnect old drive.3. Rename the new drive the same as the old drive. If the drive name, folder structure and file path are the same, will iTunes notice the difference between the two drives when I launch it? I'm on an MBP and, w/the simple OS X naming system, it seems like it shouldn't be a problem.

Mac Pro :: Moving Apple Mail Folder To Data Volume

Jul 25, 2009

Read the below quote from Mac Performance Guide. Is it a good idea? I know a bit of DOS, so I am used to command line commands but even after after Lloyd Chambers explanation, still not sure what is going to happen? ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
The reason I want to move my Mail folder out of the home directory is because I plan to have a SSD as my boot drive and the home directory is on the boot drive, correct? "Moving the Apple Mail folder to your data volume".

This trick lets you move your Mail folder out of your home directory onto your data volume. I've used this technique for years so that I can forget about having to back up my home directory (default location for Apple Mail) and simply back up my one data volume: Master. The same trick can be used for any similarly irritating program that insists on storing its data in your home directory, rather than giving you a choice (a few programs are too brain-dead for this to work). Programs like iTunes let you choose where to put your music; use that option.

Your Apple Mail folder is in the Library folder of your home directory. The trick requires starting Terminal. If that makes you uncomfortable, stop here! You are going to make a symbolic link.
0. Quit Apple Mail, and make a backup of your mail folder.
1. Copy the Mail folder to the top level of your data drive (or elsewhere, then modify step 3 appropriately).
2. Rename the original mail folder to Mail.old as an additional backup.
3. Start a Terminal window and type:
ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail

This makes a symbolic link to the folder Mail on the volume Master (type the name of your volume, and use quotes around it if the volume name contains a space character). The resulting file Library/Mail is a tiny file that says "look over there on /Volumes/Master/Mail instead". From here on out Apple Mail won't know the difference! Launch Apple Mail and verify that it worked. If you encounter problems, simply copy your backup back into place."
