Feb 2, 2012

I am in need of some cleaning up of my hard drive. Here is what I have done so far.  I purchase a 2 TB hard drive, I also have a 500 GB, both external. I have created 2, 1TB partitions.  One is for the time machine and the other is for my music, imovies, large artwork files and random documents.  Now that all of that is off of the internal hard drive, I need to clean up the dirve do that when I look at the drive, it doesn't say 2 GB available.

Safari :: Way To Reorganize Bookmarks

Jun 11, 2012

I have way too many Safari bookmarks including many redundancies. I need to do a wholesale reorganization of my Safari bookmarks.

I recently started using Dragon Drop which brilliantly facilitates moving Finder files and folders around tremendously, espcially since I started using a trackpad and find it least useful for any dragging chores. But I just discivered that while Dragon Drop can be used for moving bookmarks, it only moves copies and leaves the original where it started, which is less than helpful in expediting the reorganization task.

But the task facing my Bookmarks reorganization is closest to a reorganization of my finder.

Wait a second! I just found that I can have two bookmarks windows open at the same time on two different Safari screens on my two-screen desktop setup and drag and drop between the two screens as a way to facilitate bookmark reorganizaton.

Applications :: ITunes Music Files Messy - Reorganize Everything All Over Again?

Oct 25, 2009

I am a "sort-of" new iTunes user. I used to use it to play music without care of how to use it properly. Since I did not want to carry many CDs around, I copied all the CDs into the HD of my MBP. For simplicity, let's say I named the folder of the first and second CDs to be CD1, CD2. I don't remember how I stored the files. Either by drag and drop to the list when iTunes is launched or by some kind of import function from iTunes. The files in the iTunes folder do not seem to correspond to those shown on the iTunes list. My music files are all over the places. Some in the library folders and some seem to be in the playlist. Some of them seem to be in the unknown artist folder, etc. It is like a mess. As I just bought the IPT, I want to re-organize the files before syncing the music files from my MBP to the IPT. What is the best way to do in this case?

Applications :: Reorganize Music Folder - Get Library Back Without Redo Manually?

Jan 10, 2011

I need to reorganize my music folder on my laptop and I need to know if when I move all 7,500 songs into proper folders if I'll be able to get my library back to the state it's currently in without having to redo everything manually. I've gone through a great deal of time (2+years) rating my music and making playlists for specific occasions. So it would be a huge pain to have to redo everything. Also, will it effect my iPod classic or iPod touch if I do this?

OS X :: How To System Cleanup

Jan 28, 2010

I'm new to the forums and I think I'm mac proficient but definitely not a pro, so bear with me while I try to be as clear as possible.

After my brother stepped on my 13" black macbook (aka the love of my technological life), I felt compelled to go for the bigger screen and sprung for a used Macbook Pro. Shortly after buying it (from simply mac), I began getting messages that my startup disk is nearly full. I have some music, pics, and tv shows which I would imagine take up a decent amount of space, but I had way, way more on my old macbook, so I was perplexed as to why I was supposedly running out of space. At the advice of some other threads here, I downloaded WhatSize, which is giving me lots of insight into what's taking up space.

My question is this - in WhatSize, under devices, it shows my Macintosh HD which has apparently only 169MB available. Down below in "places", it shows "macbookpro" (with the little house icon next to it) which is apparently 86.2GB, with "Music" taking up 77.4GB. Then, under places again, below it, there's "music," as its own separate "place," taking up 77.4gb. This is probably stupid, but I'm curious as to whether this is just the computer being redundant or whether, somehow, the music is stored in 2 places taking up equal amts of space?

OS X :: Disk Cleanup And Defrag Required Or Not?

Mar 28, 2010

There is so many mixed information all over the internet. I am a little annoyed. So it's either do you need it or not? I am new to Mac. I need to make sure my computer is taken well care of. I don't want it to have files and things all over the place in the next 6 months and something happens. I don't download anything. it's all basic use. Internet, iWorks and iTunes. That's it.

Windows you need it for sure. Used windows for over who knows how many years. BUT with a MAC no one can give a definite answer? Why is that? I getting confused and getting annoyed. First someone said that you don't need it as the computer does it for you 'overnight'. Then, there is some who says to do it every 2 weeks?

OS X :: Folder Auto Arrange And System Cleanup?

Feb 5, 2010

1: I can't seem to find a way to disable folders from auto-arranging themselves. I want to organize some of my folders randomly but I can only seem to arrange them by Name, Date, Label, etc. Some direction would be helpful, as I haven't used anything but Windows until now.

2: In Windows I had System Clean-Up and System Defrag to help maintain and keep my system organized/clean. Does OS X have similar programs or is there any other type of program Mac has for users maintain their system?

After years of different macs and backups I probably have traces of a lot of junk and don't wish to go through every little folder and delete them manually. Is there a program that scans what you have in your applications folder or otherwise and detects what you have installed, what's not and deletes the orphaned configs and application support files?

Software :: Remove Internet Cleanup Demo?

Dec 31, 2005

I recently installed, and shortly after, removed a demo for Internet Cleanup. Having done so, however, a popup message appears when I fire up my eMac: "Network SpyAlert Protection Expired! The installed demonstration version of Internet Cleanup has expired. To purchase the demo, run the Internet Cleanup application for details".

It's a minor nuisance, but annoying nonetheless. I've searched for possible suspected plists and logs, but can't seem to find whatever needs to be deleted to rid my Mac of this popup. Anyone have any ideas on how to remove this fragment of the program?

Software :: Smith Micro Internet Cleanup/Alsoft

Jun 6, 2010

1. I received a message from Smith Micro about their Internet Cleanup. (They also have something that seems to cut down on excess files on computer hard drives.) It claims that there is malware directed at Macs, contrary to what has traditionally been said, and that their software can prevent harm. Is this something I really want to have? Has anyone had any experience with it? Just wondering.

2. And OWC keeps featuring various items from Alsoft (is ProSoft the same company?) for disk maintenance and recovery. I have Disk Warrior, but I'm not sure whether there's any special reason to own the others, or if the functions they perform could be done even better by other software. I searched for all those items in the CNET forums, and it's my impression that they can cause as many headaches as cures.

Applications :: ITunes - Deleting Songs - File Cleanup

Jan 10, 2011

I have my iTunes library on an external drive. I'm deleting a bunch of old music that I dont listen to in order to free up some space.

1. For some albums, I deleted them from iTunes, but I did not delete them from the hard drive(I did not get prompted, as iTunes was confused at the time and did not think the external drive was plugged in). Is there a way to figure out what files exist on the hardrive that were deleted in iTunes so that I can clean them up? Some utility maybe....

2. Many of the albums have a separate cover art jpg in the directory that does not get deleted. Is there a utility or easy way to scan the disk and clean these up as well?

OS X :: Error Messages With External Drives While Disc Cleanup/how Do I Make That Space Available?

Feb 12, 2009

so i have been using pc all my life, but now i have a new macbook and ive been downloading a lot of things. the other day an error popped up and said i was running low on disk space... ive been lazy about "reconfiguring my external hard drive for my mac" like the apple employee told me i needed to do, but i decided i should finally do it to free up space on my computer.

i have a seagate external hard drive and i plugged it into my computer and erased everything on it so i could start using it with time machine. after it started backing everything up an error popped up saying that i only have 2.2 MB available.... so on my system preferences i reconfirmed that it says 2.2 MB of 232.9 GB available. this doesnt make any sense because i just wiped my external drive, plus i didnt have much on it to begin with.

so i guess my question is, how do i make that space available?

also, i mainly wanted to back up all of my documents, music, and movies so that i could delete some movies and documents from my computer that i dont need every day and make space for more, but then when i plug my ext hard drive back in to my computer, wont it just mirror my computer with time machine and defeat the purpose of storing things on it because they will just be deleted?

i know im lame, but im really trying to get used to my mac which i know is way easier than im making it out to be.

Intel Mac :: Asking For Password Rather Than Going To Desktop

Jun 7, 2012

My IMac (intel) usually goes straight to my desktop when it is switched on. Normally only asking for a password if it sat idle for some time. Today it has gone straight to a password box, which when I enter my password it doesn't accept it. When it is not accepting the password it goes to a black screen (prior to which it has a very very dark green hue to the screen for a second).

I have tried inserting the Snow Leopard disc, both with and without holding down the command key. I have also tried holding down the command, option and P & R keys. These give the chimes every few seconds. I have done this allowing it to chime up to 10 times, but once I release the keys it still goes back to the password box. Is there an over-riding password I can enter? Or something else I can do to get past this?
