OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Is Slow / Have Cleanup Program / Do Not Have Many Applications
Aug 21, 2014
having paid for "Clean My Mac" which I run regularly and using tips like cleaning the cache in Terminal view. It is still getting slower. Can I clean off the disk and reinstall from my Time Machine, or will it re load the problem too?

program that deletes configuration files and traces of programs not currently installed. After years of different macs and backups I probably have traces of a lot of junk and don't wish to go through every little folder and delete them manually. Is there a program that scans what you have in your applications folder or otherwise and detects what you have installed, what's not and deletes the orphaned configs and application support files?

I cleaned up all my kext files from Sep 2013 back to address the kernel_task overload, but now itunes won't play (play button works but songs do not move forward), time machine will not restore backup and no audio comes from google chrome. Do I need to reinstall each individual program/application? Will a reinstall of Mavericks work?

I have my iTunes library on an external drive. I'm deleting a bunch of old music that I dont listen to in order to free up some space.
1. For some albums, I deleted them from iTunes, but I did not delete them from the hard drive(I did not get prompted, as iTunes was confused at the time and did not think the external drive was plugged in). Is there a way to figure out what files exist on the hardrive that were deleted in iTunes so that I can clean them up? Some utility maybe....
2. Many of the albums have a separate cover art jpg in the directory that does not get deleted. Is there a utility or easy way to scan the disk and clean these up as well?

My hard-disk is almost full. 25GB of data is located under my account (/users/jovandersteen). When I look in this folder and all its subfolders, I can't find the files which are responsible for 20GB+ of space. Does hidden files exist on a mac or something else which I can't see in finder.

I want to capture selections on my screen and add comments. Is there a program out there that will allow me to do that? I don't like the "grab it" program because it saves the captured file in a Tiff format instead of a Jpeg format.

I am a new Mac user with no prior Mac experience. I recently (1 week ago) purchased a MacBook Pro running Mavericks? (10.9.4). Out of the box the machine was lightening fast with startup and shutdown speeds PC users can only dream of.
I connected the MacBook to a Windows domain and that went well with no problems. I installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac and configured Outlook to connect to Exchange on the SBS 2008 server. Again, all went well and the system performed flawlessly. Then I connected to the server via Go>Connect to Server, so I could access a shared folder on the Windows sbs 2008 and that is when my troubles began.
Ever since I made that connection to the Windows server via Go>Connect to server my Mac has trouble Starting-Up and Shutting-Down. Whereas before I made the connection my Mac would boot in under 10 seconds and Shut-Down in around 2 or 3 seconds, it now takes almost a minute to boot and over a minute to shut down.
The connection to the server was made as follows:
Go>Connect to Server
Server address cifs://MyServerName.MyDomain.local (actual names not used in the example but it is a dot local domain)
It does not matter if I actually access any of the shared files during any given operation of the machine... it now consistently takes several minutes to Power-Up and then Shut-Down.
I have two network connections... one wired and one wireless and it does not matter if I use one or the other (or even both). The problem remains. It also remains if I take the machine off the LAN and travel to another location... the Start-Up and Shut-Down remain painfully slow (for a Mac anyway). PC users will think I'm knit-picking but I didn't buy a Mac to suffer the same boot shut-down times that PC users have grown to accept.
If not for the fact that the Start-Up and Shut-Down were so amazingly fast prior to adding the share capability I might not even ask the question but just watching the blazing Startup speed for the few days before adding the sharing has spoiled me.

My Macbook has been running slow for quite sometime, and regardless of my internet provider, it is deathly slow to load. I have seen individuals post the Etre info, so I thought I would do the same.I understand this computer is quite old, just trying to get it back into fighting shape post college. Whether it is a hardware upgrade (if possible).

My Safari browser has been running slow since upgrading to Mavericks last fall. Some webpages (Facebook, USAA) won't even fully load, while others load fine. I've read a lot of the other posts about slow Safari and I've tried the other tricks that people have posted (Changing DNS to the Google one, using "Reset" on Safari, turning off extensions and plug-ins) I finally downloaded Chrome and it's just as fast as my safari "used" to be. So it can't be the internet connection because both my phone/iPad browsers are super fast and my MacBook Pro's Chrome is super fast. I just want to go back to using Safari!

My question is, is there a way to hook up 2 devices (my computer and HDTV) to my speakers without having to plug and unplug them ever time? and a way to eliminate the wire clutter? Someone recommended a USB sound card?

I'm new to the forums and I think I'm mac proficient but definitely not a pro, so bear with me while I try to be as clear as possible.
After my brother stepped on my 13" black macbook (aka the love of my technological life), I felt compelled to go for the bigger screen and sprung for a used Macbook Pro. Shortly after buying it (from simply mac), I began getting messages that my startup disk is nearly full. I have some music, pics, and tv shows which I would imagine take up a decent amount of space, but I had way, way more on my old macbook, so I was perplexed as to why I was supposedly running out of space. At the advice of some other threads here, I downloaded WhatSize, which is giving me lots of insight into what's taking up space.
My question is this - in WhatSize, under devices, it shows my Macintosh HD which has apparently only 169MB available. Down below in "places", it shows "macbookpro" (with the little house icon next to it) which is apparently 86.2GB, with "Music" taking up 77.4GB. Then, under places again, below it, there's "music," as its own separate "place," taking up 77.4gb. This is probably stupid, but I'm curious as to whether this is just the computer being redundant or whether, somehow, the music is stored in 2 places taking up equal amts of space?

I've installed a program on my 2008 Mac Pro (Mavericks) called CyberViewX, which is an application for a 35mm film scanner I recently purchased, a PrimeFilm XE. The program is actually installed in the TWAIN directory tree on the Mac. (Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources)
When I log on to a "regular" admin level account (that is, the account does have administrative privileges) the program will not run; it thinks for a bit, and then says "please run as administrator"
If I open a terminal window, drill down to the program executable (it's actually buried quite deeply in the application's directory tree, but no matter), and run the program with a sudo command (sudo ./CyberViewX) and enter my admin password when prompted, the program runs fine.
Is there an easier way to do this - that is, to have the program always run with "administrator" privileges, so I don't get the error message. If nothing else, the program is also invoked by other software that came with the scanner; these programs will not work, because they use CyberViewX to actually acquire images, and CyberViewX gives the same "Please run as administrator" error message .

Is there a way to make it so all of the mkv files open in the mkv program without left clicking on each one and setting it to open in the MKV program each time?

I have gotten this message a few times now. in a small pop-up window. I have however lots of free space. Over 1 TB on both my internal drive and on my backup.
Have checked for software updates. I don't have any antivirus programs or other such stuff. It happens when I have Final Cut Pro X open. Also happened when I was using Aperture. In other words no third party programs.

I need to have 2 copies of Mozilla Firefox with abolutely separate settings on my iMac.
On my previous PC I had 2 portable copies of FIrefox from portableapps.com Can something like that be performed on iMac?
Why: sometimes I need to use a US proxy setiings in brouser (to purchase @ US stores that block foreign IPs). On the other hand I have my main everyday Firefox set up for my everyday needs. Switching settings is quite annoying. I just had a separate copy of FF on my PC for use with US proxe settings before i moved to iMac.

About a week ago my preview program has not been working properly. Whenever i try and put text into my pdf documents the preview program shows the ‘spinning wheel of death’ at the point of saving…(I don’t know what else to call that multicoloured candy-looking spinning thing) It does not freeze up with ALL pdf…just some of them. I was thinking about deleting preview and then reinstalling it..but my mac system does not allow me. One perhaps important thing is: when i edit the ‘stubborn’ pdf files, and then press ‘save’ nothing happens. I have to press save twice…then the program becomes inactive.

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.
