Apr 21, 2012About every other time I start up my Mac I get a status bar on startupt (before the login). It takes a bit longer than normal to start up but eventually it does. However, on these occasions that my Mac acts like this I also encounter two (at least) other issues. The first is the volume control has a crossed-out symbol, and hence there is no sound whatsoever—internal speakers or external. Further, and perhaps more troubling, is Spotlight does not work; I attempt to search but I only have the option for web results.Â
I also notice some general slow down and it sounds like the Mac is always working on something (fans aren't running full blast though). This led me to open Activity Moniter, which revealed and absurd amount of Wired memory (about 6 GB out of 8). Â
What is going on here? I've tried resetting my PRAM and booting in Safe mode; however, I am having the embaressing problem of not actually accomplishing those tasks (I think). I hold down the correct keys but my bluetooth keyboard doesn't seem to be responsive early enough for the keystrokes to register.Â

MacBook Pro :: Login Start-up Items Don't Start Up
May 6, 2012My computer is a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB memory. Start-up has become somewhat erratic. Consistently, if I close the lid on the computer it won't restart when I reopen it. I'll have to hold the power button down for about 15 seconds, let up and then press it again. Sometimes restarting after a shutdown the computer will go through the long start-up I associate with a crash shutdown. Sometimes login start-up items don't start up. Sometimes I have to click somewhere on the screen to make the menu bar at the top of the screen visible. Overall, unexpected things keep happening. Although I don't think it probably relates, Chrome is my primary browser.

Feb 7, 2009When my Mac boots it opens load of apps in my menu bar (InsomniaX, iAlertU, LogMeIn, EverNote) this is annoying, uses memory (probably) and it makes it look cluttered how do i stop them from loading.
I have checked the preferences in each app and there is nothing there and there is nothing in Login items in accounts in system prefs.
OS X :: System Profiler - Start-up Items Not In List?
May 8, 2009When I log into my System Profiler, I see that I have three items listed to StartUp. These items I do not use.
Now when I go into System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items, these items are not listed.
When I go into my Library, StartupItems is not listed.
I've have run a search for StartupItems on the entire machine but it's not located anywhere. Does anyone have an idea on how I may remove these items from my Start up?

MacBook Air :: Start Up Disk Full - Deleted Items But Keeps Receiving Message
Apr 17, 2012My mackbook air keeps telling me that my start up disk is full. I delete items daily but keep receiving the same message. I have found that the problem may be that items are being saved in multiple areas on my computer. I don't know why this is happening and so I don't really know which copies to delete and which to save. It this point I cant even get software updates or compress files since there is not enough space available at this time.

Apr 10, 2012My iMac does not start up as usual. I now get a ' start up disk is full. You need to make space available on your start up disk by deleting files' message. Â I am able to key my log on password however I just get the purple galaxy screen with no desktop.Â
If I try to use the keyboard I get a tone when pressing the keys. Â

Jan 3, 2011I have a macpro with OSX on one drive and windows 7 on a partition of another drive. Both systems work fine and I boot into windows by holding the option key down. What is odd is if I go to the system preferences startup disk my windows install does not show up. I did move my windows partition a while ago to a new drive. I used bootcamp to create the partition and winclone to move the data. It's not a big deal not having the option in the preference pain but would be nice. If I am in windows and go to the bootcamp control panel both OS X and Windows are there.

I get the message Verify that you have addressed this message correctly. Check your SMTP server settings in Mail preferences and verify any advanced settings with your system administrator. I have checked the settings and the connection doctor and everything is fine.If I need to send email i have to log ito my aol account via safari, but I would much rather use the mail that is set upon my mac.

Safari, iTunes, Mail, and a Finder folder show up automatically when I restart or login to my iMac. I have read some posts on this and I'm also aware that you can right click on the app in the dock and make sure it is unchecked to open at login. This problem seems to have started after I removed programs I did not want to start up in the Login Item menu in System Preferences.

May 29, 2012I cannot delete email the "normal" way. When I set up my POP account, it created a second trash folder with the same name as my mail account. There are thus two folders in my Trash can - "On My Mac" and the one named after my email account. When I try to delete any mail it says that I cannot move anything to the Trash folder for my Mail account. I have to DRAG all email I wish to delete to the "On My Mac" Trash folder? I just want to be able to click delete and have email go away! Why is this not working?

Intel Mac :: Volume Control No Longer Works?
Feb 27, 2012Still using the iMac we purchased about 5 years ago, and it's working fine. About a year ago, the numeric keypad on our wired keyboard stopped working. Anytime one of the keys was pressed on the number pad, the whole computer would freeze completely, and would have to be restarted.
A few weeks ago, we decided to stop tolerating this, and purchased a new wired keyboard with the numeric keypad. The numbers still don't work, and all the F buttons don't either. The volume controls don't work, and I've tried reconfigurating them. But they only end up working in iTunes.
We plugged back in the old keyboard and the same thing happened. Number pad doesn't work and the volume controls, etc. don't work.
Called Apple and they told me to call the store. So I called the Apple store we purchased the keyboard from, and they had no idea. Just told me to return the keyboard...
I don't want to have to try installing programs to get this to work. It really should be simpler than that.
