Intel Mac :: Can't Share Files Between It And Win 7
May 27, 2012
In system preferences, I have checked the "smb/windows" sharing option. I have selected all conceivable folders that I'd like to share ” documents, desktop, music, videos, documents. The iMac is visible in the network panel of Windows Explorer in my Win 7 laptop. Still, when I try to access the iMac from the Network panel I am only offered the option of entering the iMac's Public folders, which are empty.
How can I gain access to the files I want to share?

I used Migration Assistant to bring documents from a Windows laptop over to my new iMac. I setup several accounts already on the iMac. I want to be able to view the migrated documents across all of the accounts on my iMac. How do I do that?

I have four user accounts on the same iMac and I'd like to be able to view the files within each account. When I try access one of the other three accounts through Finder, the folders have red minus signs on them. If I try to open one, I get an error message about not have the right authorities. However, I've given all four user accounts administrator access.

My girlfriend just got a new Macbook and we're trying to share files using AFP. In system preferences, I have (temporarily) allowed "everyone" privileges to read and write to my system, and she still can't access anything. It just says "connection failed" at the top of the window, and it doesn't give any other explanation other than that. If I type in my login credentials, it logs in just fine and I am able to read and write without any problems. In another thread, someone suggested repairing my disk permissions, and I get the following error:
Code:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired. In yet another thread, I was told not to worry about SUID Warnings, but... the warnings to ignore listed in the Apple KB i was directed to did not include this specific warning. I suspect this permissions error has something to do with why she is unable to connect as a "guest" and it's driving me nuts.

I am running a MAC pro with OSX 5.8 and I'm trying to read/write files that are on a NTFS windows share point. Th eshare point is on an IBM AS400 machine. My problem is this, I can connect to the share point via the "connect to server" apple-K command and I can see the files and folders on the share point.
Recently another windows user has created a folder on the share point with some excel files in it. From my Mac I can't see this folder, it doesn't appear in the finder. I have Parallels 3 (windows XP) installed on the mac as well and when I connect to the same share point I can see and use the new folder.

I'm trying to share a hardrive from my Macpro to my Imac. I have the sharing preferences turned on and have added the volume I want to share to the "shared folder" list. When I try to access it form my Imac I can see my mac pro but when I connect I can't see any folders.
I tried to share a folder from my Mac Pro boot drive and that worked !!!? I don't know why I can't share files from my other hardrives.
By the way I'm using OS 10.5.8 on both computers.

This proves much harder than I had anticipated. I spent the entire weekend and monday trying to get it to work on my own but now I have to surrender. I have about 20GB of music on my windows 7 box, which I would like to have shared to my new Mac Mini without having them being copied. I turned on File Sharing on my Windows Machine, and use SMB on the Mac to get to the mp3 files, then I can drag the files into Itunes on Mac.
This works okay but I don't know what the limitation is, Itunes freezes when either the library gets too big, or when a single mp3 file exceeds a certain size; I am suspecting it is the stability of the samba protocol. I also tried the Home Sharing feature within Itunes between the PC and Mac, but then I can't seem to be able to sync to Iphone/Ipod from the mac. It has been an extremely frustrating first time experience with a Mac. Please give me some tips on how I can share my music between a PC and a Mac.

I just upgraded to Leopard, and I can't get Windows file sharing to work. I followed the instructions, which seems simple enough, but it just doesn't work.
I went to the Sharing pane, turned File Sharing on, enabled SMB sharing via the Options button, and set up users with read/write access to the desired folders. I also set the firewall to be wide open. From my windows machine I can ping the Mac, but if I enter the IP address or the Mac computer name in the "Map Network Drive" window on the PC, it doesn't find the network path. And if I browse for servers to connect to, the Mac doesn't show up, and there is no WORKGROUP or other entries.

I have an iPad that is synced to my home computer (iMac). I am currently in my second home and wish to move some files back and forth between my second iMac and iPad. I do NOT wish to sync them as this erases all the work I have done on files at my first home. The app I am mostly concerned with is called Songbook. My second iMac does not allow file sharing and I'm guessing because it needs to sync first. Not gonna happen. So am I out of luck or is there some way to move files back and forth? I really would like to do this as the edit function on the iMac is much better than using the Songbook app and keyboard.

New to the Mac World and trying to set things up for all our users. We have 5 (2adults,3kids) and I'm keen to be able to share some files with other members of my family and would like to know the easiest way in doing this.
A couple of things to note;
- The two adults are the admin's
- Would like to share some photos between users (family photos are usually organized by my wife so I don't get to see them)
- I'd like to let my kids view some of my videos that I've downloaded but not all of them.

I recently convinced my Mom to buy a Mac. We got her a new 20" iMac and she loves it. I'm in the process of transferring over all of her files from her PC over a network share, but I'm having trouble viewing those shared files.
I am connecting to the PC through the smb:// protocol and I can see the share... but not the files in it. I've double checked the permissions and everything seems to be in order, but no avail. I even checked the firewall settings on both computers.
I myself have a desktop PC and a MBP setup. I have no problem accessing any shares on my PC from my MBP, and I've done nothing different with my Mom's setup.

i really need to be able to share files quickly and easily around my house, the simplest was would to use and external HD, but i dont have one.
So i was wondering if i could partition some of my iMac's HDD and make it into a local drive, so my iBook and windows computers would literally see it as another HD, is this possible?

I have a centralized network location where I store my "iTunes Music" directory. This location contains all the media (music and video), but no library information. We have 2 computers with separate libraries that use the files on this network drive. Each computer has its own set of playlists, podcast subscriptions, and devices (ipods and iphones) that attach to it. I set it up this way so we would not duplicate files, but so that each computer could be customized to each user.

I just ran the Boot Camp utility and installed Windows 7 on my Mac Mini. Everything seems to work pretty well. From Windows I can see the Mac partition and from Mac I can see the Windows partition. Each OS has it's own Users file structure. Now, I recently converted over to Mac this month and have over a decade worth of files from my PC that I plan to migrate over. Best-case, I would like to be able to easily access those files no matter what OS I am using. Should I create a 3rd partition for just files? Pick either the Mac or Windows partition to be the master for the files? Can each OS easily use a different folder for the Users files (I know I was able to do it with Vista in the past, not sure about SL).
