Intel Mac :: Audio Gets Choppy And Becomes Unusable After A Few Weeks Of Uptime
Jun 21, 2012
I'm running a fully-loaded 2011 iMac (still the latest model as of this writing) and it stays up 24x7 (it's a work machine that is constantly compiling and testing software). I listen to music, mainly using Spotify, during the day. Parallels, VPN Tracker, Skype, and Chrome is always on as well.
After 20-30 days, the audio, across the board, starts to get choppy (music, Skype, even system sounds). After a day or so, it eventually gets to where the choppiness is so bad that audio is completely unusable. The only thing that I've found that fixes it is a reboot. Sigh... I've tried closing every application, plugging and unplugging the speakers, and chanting, and nothing but rebooting helps. As far as I can tell, there is no way to "restart" the audio system specifically.

it basically appeared today, and I haven't changed anything, to my knowledge. Playback is choppy, with some stuttering and static noises...It does this even when playing straight to the computer speakers...I've disconnected my router to make it isn't the culprit (it slows down my internet connection quite a lot).

I have a Mac Mini 2011, I started having audio playback problems with about 90 percent of my purchased Itunes movies. The audio is fine as long as you don't maximize the viewing window, as soon as you do the audio become choppy. I keep all my movies on an external hard drive, 1Terrabyte Western Digital Mybook (the one recommended for macs. I even tried copying a movie onto the computer hard drive with the same result. This all seemed to start after I had my mac mini hard drive replaced.

I have a new 15" MBP attached to a 24" ACD. If any sort of audio is playing through the display's speakers while the display (just the display, not the whole computer) is asleep and I wake it up, the audio gets all choppy/static-y until I pause and restart whatever the audio source is (e.g. iTunes).

I have a 20-inch Mid 2007 iMac with 2.4 intel core duo with 4gb memory running OS lion 10.7.4. I am getting choppy video with play back. I have tried resetting Safari, Uninstalling and reinstalling old and new versions of Adobe Flash. Am I SOL? Is my Processor to old? Can I upgrade it? Or do I need a whole new computer?

My iMac (Intel) is having serious problems playing saved video files, especially from the Elgato EyeTV hybrid (file extension .eyetv). Everything played fine for about 1.5 years, then suddenly the iMac just started pinwheeling intermittently and stopping the video every few seconds. It was like watching Youtube on dial-up. I tried closing programs, stopping Time Machine, restarting, reinstalling EyeTV... but nothing fixed it, it only got worse and actually started freezing the whole machine and causing incredibly slow and scary restarts with lots of blue screens. At this point I actually re-formatted the whole darn computer and the files played OK for maybe a day or two, then just started pinwheeling the .eyetv files again, although movies on my hard drive play ok now as far as I know. Youtube and other streaming has always been fine. Watching live-feed TV on the EyeTV has never been a problem either. Why can't I watch my recorded files?

I have a late 2011 iMac (21.5") that has worked pretty well since purchase in November, 2011. However recently I started to experience severe lagging and even major skipping when viewing Flash video content on a number of different sites. The behavior exists in both Firefox and Safari, and I've tried a clean install of Flash twice now with no improvement. I also upgraded my router to address intermittent wireless outages that I thought were contributing to the video performance issues.
I was previously using an old Airport Express, and purchased a new Airport Extreme. That improved my wireless performance dramatically. Constant signal drops disappeared, and my speedtest.net speed went from all over the map with an average of 5Mbps to a smooth steady 50Mbps almost every time. However the video issues have persisted. Yesterday I downloaded temperature monitor to see if overheating was an issue. Here are my readings after about 40 minutes of running flash content:
I just purchased an APC UPS (something I've been meaning to do anyway) but I'm doubtful power fluctuations are the culprit. I'll try plugging directly into the router of course, to see if somehow flash content is causing some wifi signal variance that speedtest doesn't pick up. But I'm beginning to worry that my GPU is the real issue here.

for a couple of days now my little Mac Mini is crashing/freezing after some hours of uptime.. After a reboot I get this nice "Your computer was shutdown due to a problem"-report and it says Apple is informed, but honestly spoken when looking at the stacktrace there I have no clue why this is happening:

I've had the Rev A 64SSD for about 4-6 weeks (brand new from Apple), and last night when it reached low battery with 18 minutes left I plugged in the charger.
A couple of hours later I unplugged it and it still only had 18 minutes remaining. That was bizarre because it was obviously plugged in and switched on (the screen goes brighter once the charger is plugged in).
I tried again this morning and the same thing It only stays on if it's plugged in!
Do I need to return it? Can I go into the Apple store if I bought it online? If it does have to be sent away, do they provide a replacement?

does anyone know if it's possible to copy an entire week in iCal and paste it onto the next week? I've tried fiddling around with it a little bit, but to no avail. The reason for my inquiry is because I have my college class schedule on iCal, and I want to be able to have every week just show up, instead of re-typing it every week.

I have just erased all of my architecture honours year et all off my computer.
I have two laptops at the moment as one is faulty. Needed to free up some data from time machine as it was nearly full before back up my computer to transfer to the new one. This is going to sound like madness but i deleted all of the time machine backups, because I also have old backups for a previous laptop and there is only enough room for both. Then to free up even more space i downloaded Back-in-Time to remove some rubbish from the old mac back ups, found a file I had been looking for and tried to restore that to the desktop. HOwever i clicked the wrong button and it started restoring my whole computer. It wiped my desktop and everything. I managed to stop it after only 66 KB were written. I have removed the time capsule. Is there any way to get my stuff back ? I really need it because it has all the work from my honours year, and i have deleted all back ups...

Apple replace my 2007 (June) MBP with the version just prior to this last update (June 2009 model) on April 7. Any chance Apple would swap me with the brand new MBP or am I just S.O.L. I have heard here of people purchasing MBP (because they were fed up with waiting) a week or two before the updates became public and Apple happily swapped them with the newest version

Today I was running iTunes, editing play lists, syncing them to one of 4 iPods registered to this iMac/iTunes version. 6 hours later, iMac still in same configuration, I left the desk and my son began using iMac choosing a different song on iTunes, logged on Firefox and connected his iPod (one of the 4 registered). The iTunes application froze. He called me and after seeing it crashed, I right clicked on the iTunes dock icon and force quit the application. I restarted the iMac and after it rebooted I clicked the iTunes icon and iTunes opened without our music libraries, just as it was when I ran iTunes the first time when the iMac was brand new. The top banner says, "iTunes1".

OK, kinda a long story. Pardon the ranting, but if feels like everything is going wrong and I'm getting pretty tired of it.
I was going along nicely with my Mac. Then I had a time-sensitive iMovie project that was going totallly screwy. I ended up buying Lion hoping that would fix the problem. It didn't spent several more hours trolling forums and figured out it was a weird problem with the software.
So... then I was stuck with Lion. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Rosetta Stone, etc. don't work on it. Not cool. Would have been nice if I was warned before doing this. So, I figured I'd go back in my Time Machine backup. However, I was really busy and didn't get to it until a few weeks later. I'd never actually used Time Machine, but when I went into it I was astonished to find that it backed up on the hour, filling up the external hard drive so it only kept backups for a few weeks. And of course, it was too late to backup to my old OS. So not cool. Who in the world needs an hourly backup??? I'd much prefer a weekly backup a little further back. That's just absurd.
So, anyway, I had the old Time Machine backup. I figured if I messed up, I could always restore to the recent Lion backup. So, I restored to Snow Leopard from the disk, wiping the hard drive. Then, I tried to go in and get my files off of the external hard drive/Time Machine backup. It didn't recognize I even had an external hard drive plugged in.
So... I decided to go back to Lion, maybe I needed to be in Lion to access the Lion backup. Spent hours putting Lion back on. And... still doesn't even recognize that there's an external hard drive plugged in. What gives?
I've been trying to think of what all could be the problem here. Did I just think I was backing up to the external hard drive this whole time, when really I was backing up to the computer? No, because it would send me reminders when the external hard drive wasn't plugged in. Is the cord or something broken to the external hard drive? I suppose it's possible, but just a few hours before I saw the Time Machine backups... And there is power to it.

Internet seemed very very sluggish when working at home via a wireless access point...
Tested with ping and found the reason:

Yikes... what's going on... almost every packet being dropped causing essentially unusable websites.

Conclusion 1: It's not the modem or ISP, but the WAP
Test 2: Try wireless with my trusty Linux netbook...
No problems with dropped packets.
Conclusion 2: It is the MBP + wireless that is the problem
Now what can I do about it?
I have googled around and found some older threads about problems with wireless with OS 10.6.3 and various ad hoc solutions, but nothing really current.

I desperately seek help from the community as Apple itself doesn't seem to care much. After updating to 10.7.4 my Imac has become unusable. It goes into a loading state just about every 10 minutes at which i can do little more than move the mouse around. I know it is the new update causing this (and not the hardware) because i also have a Bootcamp partition which works totally fine. Does anyone have any advice or solutions? Unfortunately i am currently not in the position to reinstall my system. I have no more space on my external HD to back up everything and am not in the position to purchase a new hard drive. And in my opinion, i shouldn't have to resort to such drastic measures because Apple released such a terrible update.

About a month back, I purchased a wireless mighty mouse and tried using it with my 2009 Mac Pro. The lag and tracking were terrible, making it unusable. When connected to my MacBook Air (on the same desk) it worked flawlessly. I assumed at the time there was a problem with the bluetooth on my Mac Pro so I've been meaning to get Apple Support on the case but just haven't got around to it (using the old wired mouse as before).
Now, I'm reading some stories on the peripherals forum that owners of Mac Pro's have issues with lag and tracking with the new Magic Mouse, and some are stating that it's a known problem with the Mac Pro chassis that it doesn't enable adequate bluetooth operation due to all the metal. Is this true? What's your experience using a bluetooth mouse with the Mac Pro?

The messages window is all over the place. I click on a message in the left hand side and nothing happens. Double click on another and I get a totally different message. I've odd blank messages... And when I quit and reopen different messages show. Now I reinstalled it a few times now, and nothing has any effect... any ideas while I wait until mountain lion?? But it seems this or hiding it will be the only way to go with the new small air. The thing that I find very badly thought out in apple's implementation is that the furthest left icon on the dock (the finder one) becomes the top on when you put it on the left or right and there's no option to reverse the this. Now when you are switching between windows it takes much more time to travel with your mouth near the top and left or right than it would near the bottom for obvious usability reasons. So you end up having the closest to you those icons (minimized ones, stacks) that you will use less often to switch from one to the other, and the ones you will use more often such as the first few ones the furthest up. I can't see how people can work with this kind of set up and I am always amazed how some people manage to keep their dock on the left or right...
