Hardware :: Wants To Hook External Storage To AEBS Via Internet Cable?
Jul 1, 2009
Does all external network storage have to be hooked to the AEBS via USB or can it go through the Ethernet port?
I am looking for a Raid 1 capable home network storage solution for sharing media, storing home movies and if it'll work, do Time Machine backups. I've read a lot of people hooking up through USB but not much about the Ethernet port.

I'm looking to hook my cable into a tv tuner that I will hook up to a Mac Mini. The Mini will then be hooked up to my flat screen.
I have Tivo now that allows me to remotely schedule recordings and it is a dual tuner allowing me to record to channels at the same time.
1. Can computer tv tuners record 2 channels at the same time?
2. Can I remotely "log in" to the Mini/tuner and schedule recordings?
3. Can I remotely log in and watch my recordings from another location?
4. Can I remotely access my tuner from another location and watch TV (like a Slingbox)?

I brought my router from the city to my cottage and I wanted to get wireless, however, when I hooked it up to my modem, it didn't work. Is it possible to hook up any old router to a non-wireless internet connection?

I followed the guide over in the MBA Forum to forward the right ports in order to access my USB hard disk over the internet. I can access it on LAN just fine, and it all goes swimmingly until I'm asked to enter the "Private IP Address" of the device. The guide states to enter an IP address in the fashion of "192.168....", but as you might be able to tell in the picture, the first three octets of my address field are greyed out and unchangeable, and only let me enter an address in the form of "10.0....". Following the guide to the end is futile, and device connection doesn't work as advertised. Am I missing something? Is my problem clearly with entering the wrong IP, or what.

not sure what the problem is here. I replaced my AEBS with a 500gb time machine, and my internet is SLOW. Not just during backups, but... all the time! I've searched around online and others seem to be having some issues similar to mine. What about you all? has anyone replaced an AEBS with a Time Machine and found network performance to be slow?? And i should re-state. Network throughput is fine. Transferring files between computers is no big deal, but the actual internet surfing is VERY slow.

I'm hooking up an external monitor to my 24" iMac. It's being hooked up DVI, problem is, when it's plugged in, the picture on the Dell monitor I'm trying to use just jutters and shakes. I tried different resolution options and none worked, most just left the Dell monitor black. I calibrated the monitor and that stopped the shaking, but when I look at the monitor everything is too big and there are still tons of "bright" pixels in the background, along with some faint lines..it just isn't right.

I have a Macbook Aluminium late 2008 (first gen), and am looking to buy an external monitor. The ones I have my eyes on right now is the Acer 24", which comes with VGA and HDMI.
- Which cable I need to hook my Macbook up to the external monitor? Should I get a miniDisplayPort to VGA adapter or a miniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter? What is the difference?
- Does audio work if I hook it up? ie. will I get sound if I plug my headphones into my new external display (NOT into my macbook)?
- Do I have to run it as dual displays at all times? or can I close the lid of the macbook, but still have the computer running on my external display?
- If I get the new Macbook Pro (when it comes out), do I need a new cable? I heard that it runs using the thunderbolt connection, does that mean I will need to get a new thunderbolt to HDMI or VGA adapter cable?
- And lastly, do I have to buy the apple branded cable adapters? Or will other (cheaper) ones do?

I'm sure there is a few people on here that have made the swap - is it worth it? Is the difference in speed noticible to warrant an upgrade.
My current setup:
2.4 MBPu
Mac Mini (coming soon)
Dell Inspiron
Canon Printer
Touch
Slingbox (hardwired to AEBS)
AE (old school version)
WD 1TB external (connected to AEBS via usb)
All currently connected to a AEBS wireless.

integrating an external HD with a wireless router. The new TC caught my eye (1TB model), but so did the price... After reading a few threads, it seems many people are creating their own makeshift TC. That is, buying the AEBS and manually connecting an external HD via USB. While I think that's a great idea, I'm a little worried about how everything would work/look. For instance, what kind of enclosure would be best for this setup? Does the external HD require it's own power source? Is there any loss of functionality with this setup as opposed to the TC?

I want to get an external hard drive for my Airport Extreme, in the range 1tb (maybe 1.5tb but likely 1tb). Google reveals some people have had problems with particular drives so I thought I would ask which drives work well so I can just avoid any problems in the first place?

I am a college student and I will be leaving for my first year of college next month. I just got my brand new 17" MacBook Pro and I would like to know if there is a way to hook up my XBox 360 and a television cable to my MacBook so I can use it's screen to play games and watch TV. I honestly don't need a bigger screen to play games or watch TV on as this one is big enough. Perhaps there is some sort of device that will allow me to do this? I don't want to record anything or do any of that stuff I just want to use the screen of my computer. It would be nice if it had a high-def hook up for the X-Box but it's not necessary. I was just wondering if anything like this existed for mac.

I have seen time and time again people suggest hook up the mbp to an external screen when at home.
So how do you "most" of your work at home?
One reason I like macs is because they are simple and easy. I could not imagine going back to a PC desktop with all the wires and space needed. I use a 27 imac at home and a mbp at when i want to be portable.

1. Can I connect an external HD to both my AEBS (via usb) and my Mac Mini via FW800?
2. If I can't do the below - lets say I connect my external HD to my Mac Mini via FW800 - with the drive be accessible on the network if my Mac Mini is sleeping?
I'm just trying to figure out what is the most efficient/produce the best speed - way to connect an external HD to my network.

After debating the need vs. want of the iMac and Mac Pro, I'm going to follow my brain and go with the iMac (27" i7) since I use it for work, though my work is in the business side of the music industry dealing more with email, spreadsheets and some minor music/photo/video editing (which is easily done for me via Apple`s iLife).
My real question is with the 3 external hard drives I want to buy - G Tech 1TB G Drives. I read about daisy chaining the drives, which sounds like a good idea. But am curious about it. Obviously if I have 3 external HDD's and want to use FW800 on all three of them, with only one FW800 on my computer, daisy chaining solves the problem. But in this set-up, what is the potential downside to this? Is there an upside or other reason(s) people daisy chain their drives, too?
I`ll use the iMac's HDD, of course. But I also need one HDD for work (important files, contracts, etc). One for personal (music, photo, video). And lastly, one as a back-up for the other HDD's.
What would my BEST and also cost effective option be? Buy 3 externals and daisy chain them? Use eSata (what would that entail)? Increased speed would be the only major plus I'm looking for with setting these HDD's up. Just not sure all my options...
But keep in mind I don`t need them to mirror each other. HDD 1 (iMac) has my minor importance stuff. HDD 2 has my work files and business stuff. HDD 3 is personal photos, videos and massive iTunes collection (300gb). And HDD 4 is a back-up of all the others. Raid seems to be not exactly what I need - perhaps overkill on cost, too. What do you think? Also, I know everyone has their taste in externals. I actually had great reliability in Western Digitals MyBook Studios, and My Passbooks. But some people I know had good time with the G Tech`s - aside from them looking cool.

Is there a way to hook up a external monitor to the 24" iMac as in the same way you can do with a macbook pro? Reason being is that I want the 24" iMac and I want to do photo editing. I'm getting mixed reviews on it due to the glossy screen. Some say yes and others say no. I have a 21 inch LCD display that I am not using. I was wondering if I can use it when I need to edit photos. I can't afford the macbook pro that I want so my next option is the iMac.
