Hardware :: Quad Sli Work On Vista?

Apr 1, 2009

I've seen some posts about the possible SLI configuration on Windows. I'd like to buy a mac pro to get a decent gaming capabilities. I'm wondering what is better: 4x GT120 or 1xATI 4870? I think the answer is quite obvious, quadro? Does the quad sli work on Vista? (I don't need it on OS X). I also know the GT120 is a bit crap but still 4x makes it theoretically faster than 4870?

Mac Pro :: Trying To Get Full 5.1 Surround Out Of Quad 2.93 When Playing Games In 64-bit Vista Ultimate?

May 9, 2009

I'm trying to get full 5.1 surround out of my Quad 2.93 when playing games in 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I want to send the multichannel audio from e.g. Left 4 Dead over optical TOSLINK to my Logitech Z-5500 speakers. Currently when I try this the computer only outputs stereo sound. I haven't encountered any definitive answers on how to get real time surround to work, but I have found the following information.

The onboard sound chip is some sort of Realtek HD Audio. I don't know exactly which chipset. The Z-5500 is capable of decoding DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 input streams over the optical cable. This works fine for movies which are already encoded, but apparently to get games to work in surround I need either Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect to encode the audio from the game in real time. However, I haven't seen any way to enable this in the Realtek HD Audio Manager (Boot Camp driver) or the Windows sound control panel. Is the 2009 Mac Pro's motherboard compatible with Dolby Digital Live or DTS connect in Vista x64 on Boot Camp? If so, how do I enable it?If it's not, can I bypass the problem anyway using third party drivers or plugins?

Windows On Mac :: Eject Keys Don't Work In Vista?

Nov 21, 2007

I'm running 10.5.1 and Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on my Mac Pro. I just installed Vista, and then just taking a random guess, I decided to insert my leopard disc into the Windows OS, and sure enough, it showed up as "boot camp" and installed a whole bunch of drivers. Is that how it's supposed to be done? I couldn't find another way to get drivers into Windows.

Anyways, the volume keys work, but the eject key doesn't. Is there any way to make it work?

Windows On Mac :: Won't Work With Unplugged / Vista Shuts Down

Mar 9, 2009

I used Bootcamp to install Vista on my Mac Book Pro 2.4 Ghz (April '08). It has been working very well until Dec 2008. While running a PC game on battery, Vista operating system would just shut down unexpectedly. If the machine is plugged in, it would work fine. Currently the problem is getting worse; when I boot up into Vista on battery, it would shut down in about 2-3 minutes.

Initially I thought it was a battery problem. I booted up into Leopard and checked the battery information in System Profiler. I didn't see any problem. 332 cycles and condition is "Good." In addition, Leopard works just fine on battery.

Hardware :: How To Make Elgato Eyetv Hybrid Work On Windows XP/Vista/7 - 32bit Or 64bit

Jan 26, 2009

I know a lot of us have the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid and would love to use it on our Macs in conjunction with Bootcamp & Windows. Well I finally figured out how to do it! All I had to do is slightly modify some Windows drivers.

The hardware being used is very similar to the Hauppauge USB Sticks.

Elgato made 2 versions of the hybrid; the older version without QAM and the newer version with QAM. (It has been brought to my attention they also have a new version out with radio capabilities).

I have only been able to test this on the hybrid WITH QAM.

I was able to slightly modify the Hauppauge drivers which allowed the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid to work under windows using both the Windows Media Center and the standalone player by Hauppauge.

So here is what you need to do:

Go to Device Manager

Vista users: Right click on Computer > Click Properties > Click Device Manager

Now you should see some devices under "Other devices" with a yellow question mark next to them. Both should be called "EyeTV Hybrid" There are two because the USB stick has both a digital and analog tuner.

Right click on either device > Click Properties > Click Details tab > Where it says Property, scroll down to Hardware IDs

If the bold numbers match, these drivers will work for you. (If they don't match please provide me with your numbers so I can try and make drivers that will work for you.)
USBVID_0FD9&PID_0008&REV_0005&MI_03

Now we can close the EyeTV Hybrid Properties windows which brings us back to Device Manager.

Download both the modified drivers (an attachment below) and the manufacturer software here:

[URL]

Unzip and open the manufacturer software, navigate to the Drivers folder, and replace: HCWemBda.inf and HCWemBda64.inf with the modified drives you downloaded from me. (You also have to unzip and open the folder you downloaded from me).

Now go back to your Device Manager window, Right click on one of the EyeTV Hybrid devices with the yellow question mark next to it and click Update Driver Software...

Click Browse my computer for driver software > Click browse and navigate to the drivers folder from the manufacturer's software > Click Ok.

Do the same for the other device in Device Manager.

Now go to the manufacturer's software you downloaded earlier and double click Setup.

Finish the install and you should be Done

Windows On Mac :: Won't Work With Parallels / Windows Vista 64-bit Boot Camp

Apr 10, 2009

I was able to get Windows Vista 64 running on my 17" MBP, it is pretty slick. I set aside 32 GB for Windows, ran the install, loaded all the appropriate Boot Camp drivers and everything is working perfectly in Windows. I boot back to OS X to attempt to configure Parallels...

So I fired up Parallels and follow the guided instructions. However, when I get to step 2 Im not sure what I should be doing. I already have Windows on its own partition, but Parallels is asking me for a CD/DVD image. Im a little leery of putting the Win disc back in, I dont want Parallels to always want to boot from the disc. how do I tell Parallels to load Windows as a Virtual Machine off of the Boot Camp partition?

The partition Boot Camp created now appears on my Desktop in OS X as Untitled, I can not, for the life of me, figure out how to change that. If I eject that volume will I still be able to Boot to Windows? Will Parallel still work?

according to [URL] it looks like the 2.93 quad has a better overall performance rating but the 2.26 has a better multicore speedup (whatever that is).

PowerPC :: Using Quad G5 Mulitple?

Apr 17, 2009

I just purchased a Quad G5, from the original owner. Original owner, stated, that the machine was in excellent condition, and had not had any problems, nor parts replaced under Apple Care Warranty. Twice today, I had programs crash. 1st crash involved Photoshop CS3 Ext. 2nd Crash, involved FireFox & Photo Mechanic, which then I received a message from within OS X, to restart my tower.

I am quite surprised about the crashes, and do not know what to do, nor expect. Before, I received the G5, the HDD was wiped, with a fresh install of 10.5.6...

I'm also having a Bus Power issue. Before the G5, I had an aluminum keyboard, plugged into my iMac C2D, and I had no problem with Bus power, driving either my Thumb Drive or HDD, but with the Keyboard, hooked to the G5, I'm getting insufficient power warnings
Also, my 23" ACD will not go to sleep. I've got the screen saver set to 3 mins, which does come up, and the time set to 10 mins, for the display to go to sleep. However, when it hits the 10 min threshold, the screen blinks off for a second, then reverts to the active desktop, and the cycle begins again.

Also, with the 23" ACD, I'm seeing, what appears to be a ghosting effect, when I have apps layered on top of each other. It has been occurring with various apps, such as having Photo Mechanic on bottom, then Firefox on top, then Photoshop on top of it.

Mac Pro :: Would An I7 Quad Maxed Out IMac

Oct 28, 2009

I know there had been some discussions here about the new i7 quad, and before I spend my hard earned cash I wanted some last minute opinions.

I post this here in the Mac Pro forums because I figure there might likely be more FCP users...which is what my main use for my new machine will be.

I have been wanting a new unit for several months now, and have been just waiting to pull the trigger on a Mac Pro. In fact, it has gotten to be a running joke around my house with my wife and I...we can be talking about something totally non-related and I will say "I just have one word for you...OCTO!!!" Anyway, I digress.

While I simply cannot justify (or afford really) a maxed out octo, I have been considering a "fairly" maxed out quad MP. But now that the new iMac has appeared, I am having more trouble.

I am not a pro...meaning I am not paying my bills with FCP. I would characterize myself as prosumer...which describing myself really means consumer who likes nicer equipment. I do want a "respectable" machine that will handle FCP with somewhat ease.

My current video set up is an HMC150 mixed with Canon 7D. Converting to ProRes 422 (not the HQ flavor) and using things like Magic Bullet. Not doing much Motion work...mostly because I have not learned that process yet. I am currently doing it on a maxed out 2008 iMac. And so far it has not been all that bad. Ingesting is not taking long enough to bother me really...and editing is nice and smooth. The only really long times are for rendering and encoding to H.264.

So, given these facts, am I way out in left field here considering a maxed out iMac? I am sure that during the process, the render and encode times will be what taxes the machine the most. And I am not even really sure that those times would be much different on a quad MP. Octo, sure. But even then I am not sure what kind of differences we are talking about. I mean would a similarly configured octo have double performance from the quad? Would a 2 hour render or encode on an octo take 4 hours on a quad?

The other thing I am thinking is this...Even if the iMac turns out to be way less than what I would like, I am thinking I can use it for awhile (as long as I can stand it) then maybe down the road look again at the MP...say after the 6 or 12 core thing plays out. I could always use the iMac as the monitor for a MP down the road. The glossy thing is not a factor for me...it doesn't bother me at all.

PowerPC :: Air-cooled My G5 Quad?

Jul 22, 2010

Well I'm kinda basically overhauling my G5 LCS so I figured, why not lets try and put a heatsink from my 1.8ghz G5 onto the quad G5 CPU since I have it out. I only have one CPU in it right now and it's actually doing pretty damn good. I set the Energy prefs to Reduced as a precaution.

If I ditch the LCS and make this a permanent setup, I will have to machine some custom brackets to hold the heatsinks to the logicboard/case. I have the G5 laid on it's side at the moment since there is no way to fasten the 1.8ghz heatsink down.

Below is a screenshot of the temps

This is with a constant 50% load on the CPUs as I just have it folding right now.

Power Mac :: G5 Quad LCS Repair?

Feb 2, 2012

Whilst servicing my LCS I had the misfortune to break the outlet pipe fom processor A's heat transfer block. (For anyone attempting to remove the factory fit tubes DO NOT try pulling them off-cut them above the barbed pipe with snips and then carefully cut them lengthwise with a craft knife and peel them back). I first tried repairing it with super glue  to no avail and then tried araldite rapid which formed a strong bond. I was concerned that any bending moment would break the join so to minimise this I cut a 3mm length of the new clear PVC tube, slid it down to the base of the pipe and liberally coated in more araldite. To further reduce bending I moved it to processor B's slot as the pipe for that is more upright. I filled the system with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. I then spent hours bleeding the system without much success.
