i have a mac mini which up until recently was working fine. now it won't read my external lacie drive, my lacie d2 burner or my m-audio firewire solo. i've tried rebooting, unplugging, replugging, switching cables...all to no avail. i hate to think that i have several hundred dollars worth of paperweights now. the system profiler recognizes that i have a firewire port, only when i plug something in it doesn't read it. are the ports on my peripherals fried?
I notice the security news that FireWire could be used to bypass your login password because it accesses your RAM.
That got me to thinking: Can you use FireWire to read/write the RAM of the 'puter next to you and could you use this "feature" to turn that RAM into a RAM disk for fast access?
across an OS 9 disk and it boots and all on my iBook clamshell. Just when I get to the screen where I choose what HD to install it on, there is 'no peripherals'
I recently bought a used (early 2008) MBPro 15" 2.5 SR to do some video editing. Unfortunately it will not recognize my Sony DV camera, or an external HD connected via FW400 or my 12" PB booted in target disk mode. The camera and the hard drive both mount instantly on my 12" PB and a friends 15" PB. Also, when I check the Firewire status under System Profiler all it says is: Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices (in red). This is regardless of what is connected to the port or if nothing is connected to the port. This is something I've been wondering for a long time. I seem to have a lot of screen-related issues with the Pros that I sit in front of in the main. Brightness controls going haywire displays not turning on, etc. There is also the odd attached USB device lockup, but I'd been putting this down to the devices themselves and the occasional, app-level instability of Leopard. More recently though, I've been seeing a pattern that's leading me to suspect the Pro's more than the peripherals. Is there a documented case of possible USB hub connection issues in (fully patched) 2008 Pros? The most frequent issue is monitors not behaving as expected when the system is booted until the monitors themselves are unplugged from power. There are also less frequent but present problems where iPods lock up, keyboards stop working, etc. I can't really abstract the problem down to an OS issue or a hardware issue, but the need for me to unplug the monitors seems to indicate that there is some sort of USB initialisation issue - as with the other minor problems I experience with other monitor-connected USB peripherals. Since I only use multimonitor environments as far as my Pros are concerned, all USB connections are usually made from the backs of the screens. So the big question is is this a screen USB hub fault, or a main-unit intermittent fault? All of the monitors I'm using have been to Applecare for one reason or another, although I'm not sure if they check everything in these repairs.
Can anyone else shed more light on this issue? It's pretty hard to replicate reliably and it's not been something I can go to Apple with any degree of certainty, yet the little minihoops I have with this problem (and oh so many other Apple issues, but that's by the by) irritate me immensely in comparison to my rock-solid, near-zero-such-issue, non-Apple environments which I also use daily.
can you do this with an airport extreme or time capsule? I assumed that by connecting the USB line of my ScanSnap scanner to these devices, I would be making them wireless (i.e., so I wouldn't have to plug the USB into my actual computer). It doesn't seem to work for some reason. Is it b/c that's not possible, or am I doing something wrong?
I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!
I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?
I googled it and it didn't help out as much. I have this Shure Mic and it has MIDI input and would like to have some kind of adapter to firewire. I know there is an USB adapter, but i would like to use firewire. It can be firewire 400 or 800. I like to record some songs for GarageBand.
I downloaded a photoshop tutorial video and the guy was using what looked like a drawing tablet and a stylus to make selections and even to apply effects and so on. Though he was using a mac system I'm sure i could still get those that work on the pc. Pls could anyone direct me to a site where i can get them
The drive in my G5 tower will read/write commercial or blank CDs and will read/write blank DVDs, however, it will not read most commercial DVDs. When I insert them it tries to read it then after a few seconds it just spits them back out. Occasionally commercial DVDs will read and mount fine, but this seems to be rare.
I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?
When I connect my external hard disk (Maxtor) to my Mac Book Pro, I am not able to copy/transfer files to it, though I can copy from it to my Mac. How do I change the permissions from Read Only to Read and Write?
My mac mini cant read DVD movies but can read Burned CD and Installers. I tried the DVD's with my macbook but works just fine. tried burning some files and it works as well. what do i need to do to fix my problem? do i need to update something or download some programs?
I know this is lame, but I searched and can't find a solution. When I click on a day in ical it says it is a Read-only calendar. I repaired permissions, but it still says read only. The strange part is, in the Get Info screen, it says Read-Write for all the users.
I'm buying an external hard drive to use as a backup for my MacBook but also as a network drive that all the computers connected to my router (Airport Extreme) can use. There are two MacBooks and two PCs that connect to the network. I only need my MacBook to be able to write to the hard drive but I need the two PCs to be able to access and use the files on the hard drive. I was going to get a 1TB external and give it two partitions. The first partition is going to be the Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other will be accessed by all computers on the network. What format will the second partition need to be so that both MacBooks and both PCs can view and use the files? Also what external hard drive would you recommend?
I can not get the read out loud to read the whole document , all is activated and I have checked the 'whole document' is clicked in the view menu The reader , reads only the section within a thin lined box, which i have to continue to manually move onto the next group of words My documents are PDF files and windows for mac?
I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.Â

This is a rather bizarre issue and I will try to explain the best I can. First off, I did a search, and found nothing recent that could help me with this issue.
Here are my specs: Uni-body Macbook Pro (late 2008) 15"-Snow Leopard I have checked for all updates, and am up to date on all things.
there my mac for some time has not been able to play dvds. It will attempt to read them, but then just spit it out after some time, if I try a bunch of times 6-8, I can sometimes get it to work, however, this rarely does.
i just thought it was compatible because it said it was made for the mac and i really wanted to use my surround sound system. So my dilemma is that it came with a firewire 400 cable and I have a firewire 800 port on my mac mini which i bought recently. I've looked for some adapters and I saw one that said it accepts male firewire 400 6 pin and at the other end is a 9 pin firewire 800. it says its designed to connect your firewire 400 cable so it can be used in firewire 800 ports for newer macs. I'm not 100 percent sure what all that means and I didn't want to go buy something without being sure that's what I need.
