Hardware :: External Hard Drive Setup

Feb 17, 2010

I'm planning on purchasing a new MBP whenever Apple releases the upgraded models. I was also planning on purchasing a 1TB Time Capsule because 1. I need a new wireless router and 2. I wanted to be able to transfer recordings from my DirecTV DVR to the TC for later viewing. In addition to being able to use Time Machine relatively seamlessly, I liked how TC offered both the wireless router and the external hard drive in one solution. But after digging around a bit, I've found that the TCs are somewhat unreliable (overheating, 5Ghz signal issues, etc.) and it won't actually allow for transfers from the DVR. So my question is...what would I need to buy to be able to utilize Time Machine in a manner that is similar to TC allows and also be able to transfer recordings from my DVR? Or even better, is there a way to set up TC to be able to do what I'd like for it to be able to do?

MacBook Pro :: Backup Data On Hard Drive When Time Machine Is Setup On External Drive?

Sep 5, 2014

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

OS X :: Can I Setup The External Hard Drive To Be Partitioned

May 13, 2009

1. Can I setup the external hard drive to be partitioned so I can keep photos on one partition and the backup on another? How?

2. Can I hook an external hard drive up to a wireless router and have wireless backups done. It is a Linksys router and has a USB port on the back. Can I? How?

3. If I were to hook up the external hard drive to the router (if possible), can Windows and Mac both view it and access and write files on there.

PowerPC :: External Hard Drive Setup For Mac Powerbook

Mar 26, 2007

A while back I bought an external hard drive for my PC, but then ditched the PC and decided to hook up the hard drive to my Mac. My External Hard Drive is a: 149.1 GB WDC WD 16 00JB-00GVA0 The problem is, I can access all the information but it will not let me do anything on the external harddrive (Like creating a file, copying and pasting a file on there, etc.) However, I can save Torrent downloads on the harddrive, but they do not show up on the actual external hard drive. But, when I press the "Find/Show directory" button in Bittorrent it does find the files. Is there something I need to do, Or is it just incompatible with my Mac?

I am currently using an external drive for my user storage.  Right now I log in with a separate User account to mount the drive, log off, and then log in with my user.  I am trying to remove the extra steps so I can boot my Mac and log right in.  I have not found any method that pertains specifically to Mavericks, and all of the methods I have tried for older OS versions do not seem to work properly.

Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Setup ?

May 21, 2008

Best way to set up my Mac pro. I have 3 Seagate 1tb drives and the stock 320gb drive installed in my system. I currently have Windows installed on the 320gb drive which I very rarely use. I have 1 1tb drive setup as my boot disk with all of my data on it. Another 1tb drive is currently used as a time machine backup of the boot disk. I just purchased and installed a 3rd 1tb drive but am trying to find out the best possible way to set things up. My intention is to slowly convert my DVDs in to digital format and store them on my mac pro. Aside from a media station I do a bit of gaming and tinker with final cut and photoshop. Any recommendations on the best way to set up these drive? I have read a bit about raid 0 and understand that improves performance and seems like a good option. If so, is it possible to set up raid 0 without redoing everything that I currently have on my first disk?

MacBook Pro :: Regarding Two Hard Drive Setup?

May 7, 2012

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro that I have used with an OWC Data Doubler. I have placed my original Toshiba drive (120gb) in the DataDoubler cage, which is what I am booting from. The new OWC SSD that I installed is a 240gb. I use this machine for video editing (using Premiere Pro CS5) and also would like to dual boot into Windows. I would like some suggestions for setup. A couple questions: Will it perform better if I am booting from my factory HDD slot, or is it okay that my Startup Disk is in the data doubler?Should I set up a raid? Would a striped raid allow me to NOT lose any space; from what I understand if I set up a Striped (Raid 0) array, I would have a total of 360gb of storage. If I set up a Raid 1, it would simply mirror my smallest drive, so I would be losing some space. Am I thinking this through right.Should I just scrap the raid? If so,, I would like to move my Home folder to my other drive, is this possible? Basically I would split my 240gb drive (120gb to Windows and 120gb to OSX). Then I would use the smaller drive (120gb) as my scratch disk.

Hardware :: Wireless Hard Drive Setup For Mac?

May 16, 2010

I am making a laptop switch from PC to Mac (MacBook). In the past my PC would always get bogged down because of too much music, pictures, and movies and I vowed that this would not happen on my new Mac. In addition, I plan on getting the iPad too when the price drops. What I would like to do is have a central, wireless, "server-like" drive that both the MacBook and the iPad could draw from.

My first thought was the TimeCapsule, but the 2 TB model is pretty expensive, and I don't like the idea that if the router or hard-drive fails then I am out of both.

My idea now is to get an airport extreme and hook up an external hard-drive. My quesion is this: can I effectively use an external hard-drive as my main hard drive? It seems that all of these external hard-drives are marketed as "back-up." What external hard-drive should I look at?

PowerPC :: PowerMac G5 New Hard Drive Setup

Oct 16, 2007

Pardon the ignorance here, our mac guys are no longer with the company so I'm doing my best to get stuff working over there... I've got a powermac G5 with no hard drive. It died/used elsewhere/stolen, no idea. I'm assuming the rest of the machine is in working order. We purchased a new 250 Gb Hitachi SATA hard drive. Plugged it in and booted off the OS X install disc. Get the apple wallpaper with the spinning "hourglass". Shortly after I get a message in a few languages telling me I need to restart the computer by holding down the power button. We've tried another install disc, same result. I put the hard drive in another mac and formatted it, OS Extended (journaled). Same result. There was some Kingston ram installed in the machine, I removed those 2 sticks, same result.

Hardware :: Hard Drive / Backup Setup?

May 28, 2009

I've done a lot of research on backup setups, and here is what I'm leaning towards. I'd love your thoughts. I have a 13" macbook aluminum and 24" LED Cinema Display. I use my computer for both a small business I run and law school. First, I plan on replacing the 160GB internal drive with a 500GB 5400rpm Seagate Momentus. Then I plan on getting an external 1TB external drive (leaning towards the WD Elements or Seagate FreeAgent Desk) that I will leave connected to my Cinema Display and utilize Time Machine. For my second level of backup, I plan on using one of the online/cloud backup services (leaning towards Mozy, Carbonite or Backblaze) and setting it to back up the system on a semi-regular basis (perhaps every six months). Any suggestions on a better setup? This really represents the extent of my budget, so I'd like to not spend much more (unless its really necessary to be safe). Also, any thoughts on what online setup would be best for a backup every six months (I don't ever anticipate having much more than 350GB of data).

Hardware :: Wireless External USB Drive Setup

Jul 30, 2009

I have a question regarding setting up my external drives to be accessed over my wireless home network. We have three usb externals(2 x WD passports and 1 x Lacie 1tb) that, as I've already mentioned, we'd love to be able to access over our network. We have two computers, a Dell(four years old) and a Macbook Pro(one year old). Our wireless modem is a fairly recent Belkin but does not have any usb ports.

So my understanding is that we need to invest in a wireless usb router. I've looked at the Apple Airport Extreme but it only has one usb port. Can a usb hub overcome this? Will the three drives be accessible on both computers? Does the PC/Apple environment make things complex? Is the airport extreme a good choice? Are there other options? Is it fairly common place to do this?

Applications :: Possible To Setup IMovie To Use External Drive?

Apr 26, 2010

After shooting dSLRs for years, I am now thinking of getting my first camcorder. My MBP has about 160GB left after giving 100GB to bootcamp, letting iTunes and iPhoto09 swallow they part and now I worry about storage for editing, processing and exporting video.

I have been thinking of getting one of those Western Digital FireWire800 drives. But is it possible to set up iMovie09 to use the external drive 100%? So in this way I can avoid having temp files and those massive AIC files on my MBP hard drive?

MacBook Pro :: Cloning Entire Hard Drive To An External Hard Drive

Mar 31, 2012

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

IMac PPC :: Make Hard Drive Into An External Hard Drive

Mar 1, 2012

I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.

I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.

What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.

Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?

Hardware :: Q950 Hard Drive & Connect External Drive To IBook Or Dell?

Jan 29, 2008

I have an elderly Q950 with an external hard drive with everything backed up onto it. The external drive is a Micronet ADV1000E, with a sticker on the back saying it's Macintosh or PC compatible. I also have an iBook laptop, & PC Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. As I have the 2 laptops, the Quadra hadn't been switched on for maybe one year. On the weekend I tried to get it to boot up (with & without the external drive switched on), but all it does is display a grey screen with an image of a 3.5" disk with a '?' in the middle. If I start up from a Norton 3.5" disk it still can't find the external or internal drive. If I try booting up with my finger in the shift key it doesn't want to know.

1. Any idea why the Quadra isn't seeing either the external or internal drive & what can I try to do?
2. Is there any way I can connect my external drive to either my iBook or Dell? At the moment I have no cables to connect the old & new - are cables available & if so any idea where from? I've looked high & low but so far no joy.
3. Is it possible to remove the hard drive from the Quadra or the external drive & put in an external drive enclosure, then connect that to either laptop? I see there are drive enclosures available which are Mac & pc compatible. This by the way would be a major undertaking for me. I'm by no means a computer dunce but would be wary of trying it.

Hardware :: Won't Show Up G-Tech G-Drive (500GB) External Hard Drive

Jan 16, 2008

when I went into the "get info" window for the G-Drive and switched the ownership/permissions dropdown from "read/write" to "no access". When I tried to switch it back to read/write, it would say read/write in the dropdown, but then I'd try to access the g-drive and I'd only get to the first set of folders--when I'd click on a folder, there would appear to be nothing in it. (Not sure if this is really related to my current problem.)
I then tried ejecting and remounting the drive, but it didn't show up on my desktop. Stupidly, I assumed my computer didn't recognize it at all and unplugged the firewire without ejecting thru disk utility. When I did this I got the device removal error.
I then plugged the firewire back in and tried repairing the disk in disk utility, but it said it didn't need repair. When I click on the G-Drive in disk utility the info at the bottom says:

Mount Point :/Volumes/G-DRIVECapacity :465.6 GB (499,973,603,328 Bytes)
Format :Mac OS ExtendedAvailable :
Owners Enabled :NoUsed :
Number of Folders :0Number of Files :0

0 Files! I'm worried about losing all my stuff! I then tried DiskWarrior (v4.0). When I first opened it I think the info at the bottom said "This disk is a Mac OS Extended disk. This disk does NOT appear on the desktop." I'm not quite sure about that "not" b/c after rebuilding the directory of the G-DRIVE I know it now says "This disk does appear on the desktop." Anyway, it's definitely not appearing on my desktop. After building the directory it said "All file and folder data was easily located. Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicate that there will be changes to the number, the contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders." And later: "19 files (and 2 folders) had a directory entry w/ an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired." And:

Disk Info:
Files: 51,646
Folders: 18, 493
Free Space: 65.42GB
(etc)

I then clicked "Replace" whereupon it said it was successfully replace. But still it did not appear on the desktop even after ejecting, remounting, rebooting computer, etc.

If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm pretty desperate here! Thanks!

(FYI I already tried going into the Finder permissions and unclicking and reclicking the box for showing disks on the desktop. Also, I plan on getting DataRescueII in case that's necessary, but i hope it isn't)

OS X :: Recover Data Fom Hard Drive / External Drive Stopped Mounting

Sep 4, 2009

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!
