Hardware :: External Blu Ray Writer Plays DVDs And CDs?
Sep 8, 2009
I just bought an external LG blu ray player and am trying to get it to work on my iMac. It only came with windows software, and having installed it on my windows partition, th best it will do is only play audio. I have snow leopard installed and there doesn't seem anything on it to play blu Ray discs. Is it a software or hardware problem? I have a radeon 1600 graphics card, is it too outdated now?
I am trying to restore my MacBook Pro, but when i insert the OS install disc, it just spins and spins and spins, tells me the disc is blank, and ejects it. I tried using other installation discs (MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut),and had the exact same result. My drive will play DVDs without any problems. What do you suppose is wrong? I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC to no avail.
I had been considering getting an external Blu-Ray burner for backing up iPhoto, iTunes etc. - if I found a cheap one. but I cannot find any Blu-Ray writers that specify MAC compatibility. how can I know for sure?
My imac is not recognizing any external dvd writer drive. I have imac with Core i7 and Mac OS 10.6.8. I have tried external dvd writers from Samsung and Amazon Essentials but the computer does not recognize any of them. Which Dvd writer is compatible?
How to find address for external cd/dvd writer in my 2008 iMac? The internal dvd/cd writer stopped working years ago. It was less expensive to buy an external writer than have the internal one fixed. Until now I have had no problems with it.
Now my Toast burner needs the internal address of my external writer and what it is or how to obtain it.
You know one of those long number things like 198.209.3.101 for instance.
My new DVD burner will play CDs and DVDs and burn CDs, but will not burn DVDs through the finder. Will getting TOAST definitely enable me to burn DVDs? I don't really need it otherwise and I would rather not buy it unless it will definitely enable me to burn DVDs.
Recently, my quicktime (with Perian installed) stopped playing AVI files - giving me the whole 'The movie is in a format Quicktime doesn't understand' business. This made no sense to me as AVIs were playing fine previously. Nothing I did could fix the problem. HOWEVER, just today I plugged in an external monitor to test something out; lo and behold, quicktime is playing AVI files just fine again. What's going on?! Has anyone seen this behaviour before?
I just hooked up my macbook pro to an external monitor. Now, when I watch videos and what not, they will ONLY work in full screen. If I want to watch the video in a window, the sound will play but video does not. It may have something to do with Flash?
For the last year I have been searching for a way to play Netflix instant streaming content on my external Cinema Display connected to my iMac. Once a movie was playing full screen on the external display if you clicked on anything on the main display the movie would fall out of full screen and back to window mode. This is highly annoying and I really wanted a solution.
I ran across Plex some months back and they had a Netflix plugin which solved the problem, or so I thought. While Plex could play movies from Netflix full screen on the external display without falling out of full screen, it came with a host of compromises. The first compromise was that in Plex my instant queue never reflected what was actually in my queue. Recently I had 116 movies in my queue and Plex reported only 80 of those. Worse if one of the movies I wanted to watch was missing I would try to use Plex's Netflix search function and Plex would still not find the movie. Some titles simply could not be found through Plex, a problem the author acknowledges and says he is working on with no ETA. The other issue I have with Plex is that the fast forward and rewind functions that work so well in the Netflix browser based player do not work at all in Plex, making navigation in a movie painful within Plex.
So tonight I set out to look for an alternative to Plex, I came up empty handed. Then I had an idea, I searched my Mac for the Silverlight plugin and when I found it was greeted with a window stating that an update was available. This has happened several times before and each time I updated with the hope that Microsoft fixed the external monitor viewing problem, but it always remained. So this time I updated and proceeded to run my usual test which is to put a Firefox browser window on my external display, play a movie, and then click the full screen button. The movie went full screen which it always does, then I clicked in my other Firefox window open on my main display, as always the window on the external monitor fell out of full screen.
Dejected I went on to my second test which is to perform the exact same sequence I just described but using Safari instead of Firefox. Again it went full screen on the external display but this time something was different! The window where I clicked full screen froze and a new window opened behind it in full screen. Now I had two windows open on the external display, the smaller frozen one and a full screen one playing the movie behind it. I minimized the small window which left only the full screen one playing on the external display. Then I clicked on a window on my main display and the movie continued to play full screen on the external monitor! Thinking it was a fluke I closed Safari and tried it again, it worked perfectly!
This is awesome now I can play my Netflix movies on my external display in full screen without any issues and I have all of the features of the Netflix browser based player, in particular fast forward and rewind.
One last thing, prior to this working playback in a browser window was extremely choppy for me. Plex did not play choppy and it was another reason I was using it for playback. Now in full screen with the browser based player through Safari there is absolutely no choppiness.
Just for reference here is everything I am running:
OS X 10.6 Safari 4.0.3 Silverlight plugin 3.0.40723.0 (which interestingly is dated July 23)
Even though my system told me an update was available I am confused by the July 23 date of the plugin. Maybe it wasn't the plugin that solved this but rather my newly installed Snow Leopard in conjunction with Safari 4.0.3? Whatever the case I am thrilled to report that it finally works!
Hope I can ask this here. I installed Snow Leopard and now have copied a cd. I have a LaCie dvd copier with Light Scribe. I used the LS and it ran normal but when finished the disc had nothing on it. I went to the LaCie sight and nothing is mentioned about Snow Leopard.
Looking to buy a 2TB internal drive as well as a blu-ray reader/writer for my new mac pro. Im going to be replacing my factory installed optical drive with the blu ray drive. The two I like are linked below.
1. Does anyone have a bad experience with these?
2. Are there better drives out there for that cost? I saw the WD Green Caviar 2TB drive for only $99, how does that compare to the black caviar? [URL]
Im looking to add an internal Blu-Ray Writer to my 2009 Mac Pro so I can back up my Blu-Ray's and convert them to MKV. I know any SATA drive will work but Im looking for peoples experience of what drive to get. Im looking for the drive with the quickest read speed to make converting Blu-Ray to MKV as quick as possble.
I have an iMac 27" OSX 10.7.4. My DVD Writer Stopped Working. It Can't Read or Write Any DVD or CD. Every Disc Display As a Blank. And on Windows It Doesn't Show Anything After Inserting a DVD or CD. I Tried All Types of CD and DVD like Audio, Video, Originals, Duplicates, HD , Picture, Music, MP3 and All.
Been searching online for an easy way to copy DVDs to the hard drive so they can be watched without the external DVD player needed for the MacBook Air.I've converted the DVD to a .DMG file using the disk utility tool and then mounted it...but cant figure out how to make it actually execute inside of QuickTime...
This is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.
Does anyone have a recommendation of which external drive to purchase for my Macbook air so I can play my DVDs and load Microsoft Office onto my Macbook Air?
I have a .mov file of a 16:9 programme that was in 4:3 full height anamorphic 720 x 576, so i opened it in QT7 pro and changed the frame size to 1024 x 576 so it plays in 16:9. All works well in QT7Pro but if movie is played in QTplayer 10 it plays back in 720 x 576 again. How can i make the movie retain the correct aspect ratio for any QT player?
I installed a dvd into my imac and everytime I want to watch it I have to eject the dvd then reinsert it for it to start to play.Is there a way I can get the dvd to play without ejecting it first.
I have a DVD with a video on it that plays fine on a PC but on my Macbook Pro it says that it's a blank DVD and will not play the video that is on the disc. The video plays on Windows Media Player when I open it on a PC, so I installed the newest version of Flip4Mac thinking this would work, but the disc still shows up as a blank disc and cannot be played. I work in the legal field, so I got the DVD from an attorney, and I frequently tend to have problems opening videos on my macbook pro that come from the legal field.
I have the newest mac ox software and everything is updated from what i can see. but if i try to watch some video i d/l from the web i can't get any sound from then just the video. anyone else having this problem or know what i can do to make it work?
I recorded a single track on GarageBand, and I can only get the audio to come out of the left speaker. There is no sound of any kind coming out of the right speaker. If I pan the track all the way to the right, no sound comes out at all. I've tried duplicating the track and panning one all the way to the left, and then panning another all the way to the right, but I've had no luck with this either.
This just happened today- I have a imac 21.5- and when I put in a DVD the movie worked but the color wheel would NOT go away. I tried everything from pressing ESC to trying to fast forward/rewind- nothing worked. I had to restart the computer by pressing the button on the back. I tried playing the DVD again and the color wheel came up. The DVD plays fine in other players.
