ICloud :: Why Does It Change The Log-on Photo Of Secondary Users

May 1, 2012

I have a prime iCloud account that I use to maintain a single address book and calendar. That way my wife and myself can both keep our address book and calendar the same and current. The iCloud account is in my name using my Apple ID and my wife's Mac is logged in to this account. Both of our Macs have a photo asssociated with our log on IDs. As long as my wife's Mac is logged in to iCloud (the desired situation) the log on photo that appears on her Mac is my photo not hers. I can succcessfulyl change it back to hers using the "Users and Groups" from the "Systems Preferences", but in no time at all it gets changed to my photo. I have isloated the problem to iCloud by having her Mac not logged in to my iCloud account and her photo remains unchanged, as I would expect.

On her Mac, I have reset the PRAM and executed a safe boot in an attempt to flush any strange data. I have not tried deleting any preferences files as I am not sure which ones to try.

ICloud :: Why Are MobileMe Users Being Forced To Switch

May 29, 2012

Add me to the list of MobileMe subscribers who are not happy about the chance to iCloud.  I was very happy with MobileMe.  I'd much rather pay for a good product vs. being forced to use an inferior free product.  I back up all my work data to MobileMe/iDisk and I am concerned that it will not be transferred and that I may run into problems in the future.  A previous post that I just read said that data will not be transferred.  Is this true??  Also why are photos and videos not being transferred?  Can they at least be manually reloaded?

My family has several macs with different users. We all have the same contacts and calendars so everyon just logs into the same icloud account. But we would like to be able to use the beta messages and for that matter mail without everyone seeing eachothers mail and messages. Is it possible to set that up using iCloud?

Intel Mac :: Why Apple Force Users To Download Lion Before Changing To ICloud

Apr 10, 2012

I resent that Appple forces us to pay for and download Lion in order to switch to iCloud, a system that has many users furious. After downloading Lion, my personal cd archives from iTunes vanished, and several of my friends, on switching to iCloud, lost their mail contacts. YES - they followed the complicated instructions from Apple as to how to save everything, but so much fell apart. I had a chat with an Apple person and even she was mystified. I was going to buy an iPad but now I won't as just having an iMac is enough with so much difficult stuff going on.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Edit Users In Workgroup Manager, New Users Cannot Login

Feb 13, 2012

Today when we started trying to add users to our server (we use it only for afp access at this time), we noticed that new users belonging to a group "storage" were unable to login from client machines via afp (clients both 10.7.2 and 10.6.8).

When we tried editing the users accounts to change which groups they belonged to, it would appear in workgroup (and server preferences) that the changes would take but there was still no access.

As a test case, we modified an existing user who had no issues logging in to belong to a diffenent group and have different sharepoint access. The changes looked good in workgroup and server prefs, but when the user logged in, he was only able to acces his old sharepoint and not the new one (and since his permissions to the old were removed, he shouldn't have access to that sharepoint).

Also, for some reason users cannot be deleted within workgroup manager any more. The login used was the diradmin account.

MacBook Pro :: What Video Format (including Embedded Audio) Can Be Viewed By Both OSX Lion Users And PC Users

Mar 22, 2012

I am currently am MBA student and must create projects using power point/ keynote, very often. Many of the power points/ keynotes created by students are informative but lack the ability to hold an audience’s attention (boring). Since I have this wonderful Macbook pro, I would like to create a dynamic keynote presentation which would include clips of audio and video files (I already know about converting keynote to power point). The only problem is, the videos I want to use in the keynote presentation are not able to be manipulated in iMovie (due to their format), and if they where able to be manipulated in iMovie, I’m not sure that PC users would be able to properly view them.

What video format (including embedded audio) is able to be viewed and heard by both OSX Lion users and Windows users?   If this is possible, can anyone suggest a safe application that I can purchase from the apple app store that will allow me to convert video files (including embedded audio) so that it can be viewed by both Lion and PC users? Preferably one that does not need access to the internet in order to convert the files ( I’m on the go allot and use an air card for internet access), but I will take it if this is the best option.  If the app store does not have this type of application, is there a place that I can download a safe one?

OS X :: Going From 2 Users To 1?

Oct 18, 2009

My wife and I decided that multiple accounts were a pain for various reasons. So, I was going to do a fresh install of SL, and just have one user.

I'm thinking that I cannot do a time-machine backup since it will maintain the current file/permissions structure. Should I just copy my files over to an external hard drive (exporting both of our bookmarks and my mail files) and drag them back? I'll be doing a clean install of SL so I will be re-installing all applications (I don't have many applications).

OS X :: Web Hosting For Mac Users?

May 18, 2005

I tried to find the right host for my new business' website, and saw that iPowerWeb were Mac users. I was happy with the prices, etc, but now I can't send email because there is all kinds of spam being reported from my web server's IP address. The company is supposedly trying to 'fix' the problem, but in the meantime, 'spam cop' and AOL and Yahoo are bouncing my emails. Maybe it's a virus on the server, but I thought they used Macs? Anyway, does anyone have recommendations on dealing with this, or finding a better host, or any tales to share?

Software :: Installing For All Users

Dec 26, 2007

I'm a new (one day old) imac user having converted from PCs, so hopefully this question will be a simple one. I purchased some software to use on the mac that I want all users to be able to use. This is a family computer, so that equates out to myself, my wife, and three kids. After I installed the software (I have the administrator account), I logged into the other users area and the software that I installed is not available to them. How do I push the software install out to them?

OS X :: Setting Up Users For First Time?

Nov 6, 2008

I am setting up a new iMac for my parents and since I'm a noob to macs myself (had one for only a few months now) I was wondering what's the best way to set up user accounts. I need to create two accounts so ma/pa can log in and access their own settings, look and feel etc. They are moving from windows XP where they had their own user profiles (dad would leave his desktop littered with icons while mom kept hers nice and clean) so I need to keep two profiles otherwise this would confuse them. I guess my most important questions are:

1. Should I create a separate admin account first when setting up the iMac then create the addition two accounts, or just create two with one of them being an admin. I intend to put something like LogMeIn on there so I can remote in to do any maintenance for them, install apps etc.

2. Dad uses AOL mail and Mom uses Yahoo. I would like to setup Mail so that they can access their emails without using the web mail apps. Question: When the mail accounts are setup are they only seen when logged in under each user profile? In other words, will Dad only see his email in Mail then when Mom logs in she'll see her email etc. or will they both see each other's mail?

Mac Pro :: Multiple Display Users On One?

Mar 23, 2009

Alright so this is what I want to do and I need to know if its possible before I waste some money. I have the 2.8 Octo with 2 24" monitors and 16 gb ram and an 8800gt. Me and my future wife both like to play WoW. I know you can open multiple instances of WoW with separate accounts, but what I need to know is can I set up my dual monitor setup to act as if it is two separate computers with 2 keyboards and 2 mice so we can play together without having to purchase a whole second computer? I'm willing to buy another GFX card if I have to along with the second mouse and keyboard since that would still be cheaper then buying another computer.

OS X :: Installing Multiple Users?

Apr 3, 2009

are Mac and third party apps in general (if its possible to generalise?)

The reason I ask is that on Win XP (my iMac is "in the post" :-) its hit and miss what happens when you install an app. Sometimes they ask if this install is for multiple users, other times they don't (iTunes being one of the worst offenders) and then the first time another user logs on or uses the app they get a very confusing (to them) license acceptance screen.

OS X :: Permissions On Users / Shared?

Jun 14, 2009

How do I make sure that all users (with seperate accounts) on my MacBook OS X have full rights to all folders and files (new and old) for the folder Users/Shared?

We are two persons sharing our MacBook - and we want to share iTunes library, iPhoto-library + a common folder where we store documents like budget planning etc.

We have no problems creating files in the shared folder - but once I have created a file in the shared folder, the other user can only open this in "read-only"-mode. This also happens when I have used the iTunes library or iPhoto-library. After this the other user only has read-only access to the library. It happens with all types of files, e.g. also files created by [URL] pictures created with PaintBrush etc.

OS X :: How To Prevent Users From Running An App

Jul 7, 2009

here at school (where i also work in the IT depo), people have been Playing WoW(even staff members) when they are not supposed to(which is anytime). We have been able to combat it on windows in the form of software restriction polices, but have no solution for the macs.

Is there a way to block wow.app? or better yet also be able to block all .App's from an external drive?

I really dont want to use parental controls and select the dozens of other "ok" apps.

OS X :: How Can We Change Users From Sleep

Aug 15, 2009

I tried searching but this particular problem doesn't seem to be addressed.

OK, when I leave my computer, I either put it to sleep or let it go to sleep on its own.

My sister-in-law is down for an extended visit and I am letting her use my Mac. I, the administrator, made a new user for her. When she wakes the computer, it shows my name. It doesn't show the other users. If she types in her name in place of mine and her password it doesn't work. Just says wrong password or user name. I've triple checked that they are correct and tried to change users myself.

How can we change users from sleep?
