So I just got this new Mybook 2 TB drive at costco, and it says it needs an update to firmware, but I'm nervous because I have data on it that's not backed up. Does updating the firmware affect the data on the drives?

However, I do not want to lose my data in the process and would like everything to be the same once transferred over.I understand that changing the Hard Drive will void my warranty and I am okay with that. Here are my questions and concerns:My MBP has both OS X and windows (via Boot Camp). I would like to retain the data of both partitions exactly as is on my new hard drive. So to do that, what do I have to do? I imagine that I need a special piece of software for both OS X and Windows to clone my hard drive. What software do I need? Then after cloning the drive, what would I have to do?

I'm having a weird problem with the 1.3 version of EMI Firmware Update.
After I restart my computer after installation, everything seems okay. But a couple of days later, Software Update prompts me that I need to install exactly the same firmware update again, as if I hadn't installed it in the first place.
I have three Airport Express units around my house, and I regularly stream to them from my mauc using airplay. Last week I updated the firmware for the AE's and now none of them show up as remote speakers in itunes. Even the little airplay icon is gone from iTunes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am in need of an external hard drive for backups of my new 24" iMac due to arrive on Wednesday March 25. I am moving from the PC works (old Dell) and will need something larger than the old one I have for the long term. I have an old external hard drive case and a 250GB ATA hard drive inside I can use for the time being with the new Mac if I reformat it.
That said, I would like to get a drive that is at least equal to what is in the iMac with is 1 TB. I have read a lot of postings and believe I will get a Western Digital MyBook for Time Machine backups (unless someone has a better alternative). Is there any reason to get the Studio 1 or II (FW 800) over the Essential (USB 2.0) for my purposes - backups only? The price difference is $40-80 for equivalent drive space with connections being the difference.
Will a strong firmware password protect my data from investigators installing/using forensic tools on my Mac?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have my iTunes Library Folder on my external hard drive which is a WD MyBook Live.I did this to save room on my macbook's hard drive. It is great and I successfully moved the folder over and saved tons of space on my hard drive.The problem I'm having is that each time I turn on my computer and open iTunes for the first time it asks me to manually locate the iTunes Library Folder.I have gone in and reset and updated the physical location of the folder to the external hard drive but it still makes me go and manually find it before it will open.Once I do that it works fantastic.

Where do you sit on the whole Genie Effect vs Scale Effect war that's been raging for the last 8 years? Whilst the Genie wowed me the first time I saw it, I chose Scale Effect pretty much as soon as I got OSX, preferring performance over prettiness. Now, years later, when I occasionally catch it on other peeps machines I think it just looks... tacky. I wonder how many people on here still have it switched on?

I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. I have now lost all my data, photos, files, music etc. NO backups, only simply because i did not know how to do them. Is there any way of getting the files back? Today, I was doing a time machine backup, and the backup failed. Ok, it's normal since the drive started updating the firmware. But after the firmware update failed (updater got stuck), the drive now spins, light on, but the MBP won't see it, and neither will the firmware updater. If so, what was the solution? Just have to go for the warranty?

I have a mechanical fault with my combo drive (cdrw/dvd) in my Powerbook 12" 1.5 GHz running Leopard which makes it noisy even when there is no disk in there. Is it possible to disable the device by removing it from the device tree in Open Firmware before OS X boots? It sounds like the drive is checking for a disk. I am sure there is not a disk in there as it still accepts and ejects other disks. If it were to be removed from the device tree would this likely solve the problem, or would the power cable to the drive have to be physically disconnected?

The drive doesn't even recognize it. I did some research, I came to the conclusion that I have to update the pioneer d112 firmware. Seems simple but the pioneer update is for windows format!

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.
Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I have an '05 mac mini (pre-intel chip) with OS X 10.4 that while trying to transfer a file to an external hard drive gave me a blue screen (that wouldn't go away). After a hard shut down, I get to the apple and spinning wheel but nothing else happens.
My goal is to get to my files on the mini and put them on an external drive (specifically my itunes folder)
Is there some other way to repair this? I have 17 GB left on the main hard drive. Could I partition it and create a new bootable drive without wiping out the data in the original drive?

Tore open my WD MyBook to replace the internal disk, and after piecing it back together, it no longer mounts in Finder. Disk Utility is also blind to it-- in fact the only thing that will see it at all is System Profiler.

Sometimes, after the Mybook is not used for a while, it will shut down, to the point that, only unplugging both the firewire AND power to the Mybook will restart it. How do I get this thing to reboot and show up on my desktop/finder again? It's quite frustrating w/ itunes, as the songs wont play at all if the HD shuts down.
