My old MyBook Home Premium 500GB drive has over 60000 bad blocks (and only 1/3 of the way through the scan) so I need a new drive. What would people recommend for it? I guess a WD Green 1TB would be OK but will that work in the MyBook enclosure? Any experience out there?
View 4 RepliesI am in need of an external hard drive for backups of my new 24" iMac due to arrive on Wednesday March 25. I am moving from the PC works (old Dell) and will need something larger than the old one I have for the long term. I have an old external hard drive case and a 250GB ATA hard drive inside I can use for the time being with the new Mac if I reformat it.
That said, I would like to get a drive that is at least equal to what is in the iMac with is 1 TB. I have read a lot of postings and believe I will get a Western Digital MyBook for Time Machine backups (unless someone has a better alternative). Is there any reason to get the Studio 1 or II (FW 800) over the Essential (USB 2.0) for my purposes - backups only? The price difference is $40-80 for equivalent drive space with connections being the difference.
So I just got this new Mybook 2 TB drive at costco, and it says it needs an update to firmware, but I'm nervous because I have data on it that's not backed up. Does updating the firmware affect the data on the drives?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have my iTunes Library Folder on my external hard drive which is a WD MyBook Live.I did this to save room on my macbook's hard drive. It is great and I successfully moved the folder over and saved tons of space on my hard drive.The problem I'm having is that each time I turn on my computer and open iTunes for the first time it asks me to manually locate the iTunes Library Folder.I have gone in and reset and updated the physical location of the folder to the external hard drive but it still makes me go and manually find it before it will open.Once I do that it works fantastic.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOkay, I've recently re-discovered the 250gb drive that came with my Mac Pro, which I immediately switched out for four 750gb ones. Anyway, I now have need of a new external drive, so my thinking was to simply get a drive-enclosure rather than a whole new external drive. My need isn't urgent, but it's one of those things I really like to have and do find useful from time-to-time, though this may change. My requirements are:Supports 3.5" form-factor, SATA-300 drives, as that's what I've got. Is boot-able, as I'd like to use it as an emergency drive, and possibly install Windows to it, though I may change my mind on that as the procedure looks fairly complicated. I read somewhere that whether a computer can boot from it or not may depend on a chip in the enclosure but I'm unsure how to find out about that. USB 2.0, as while it's not a compact drive I'd like it to be portable. Additionally on this front, being bus-powered would be great, but not an absolute requirement (I'm not incapable of carrying a power-adaptor Just hoping to get any recommendations from people that have bought USB enclosures recently, or otherwise know of some good ones to investigate.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro 15 (2006) 2 ghz core duo, 2 gigs ram, & 100 gig 7200 RPM hard drive. I would like to change the the hard drive out to a larger one, but I'm seeing all kind of reviews & I'm not sure which ones to put more weight on. I have been looking at a 320 Gig or the 500 Gig. Looked at the Seagate, WD, & the Hitachi. I want to stay with the 7200 RPM. I also know there can be an issue with the, shock or drop sensor on the hard drives not being compatible with the laptops shock sensor, as well as heat & noise issues. I will state that this is my first Mac since the late 80s. But that I have a several very good friends that are long time Mac users and that have done this type of switch out, so while I know that the switch out is more complicated than some I have good tech support on that side of this switch out.

I was wondering if anyone had any internal hard drive recommendations for a 2T drive. I have been having some strange problems lately with my imac locking up with only the mouse responding that may or may not be hard drive related. I was using a Seagate drive but I would like to go with someone else.

I bought a couple of WD My Book Studio Edition but have no end of problems on FW800, and looking around here so is everyone else. LaCies seem to have similar problems, plus my own experiences in selling these and seeing FW ports falling off the enclosure's board, etc., puts me off them. Maxtors seem to have different issues and the new brown and orange Seagates are too fugly to even consider. So, anyone recommend a solution (250-500GB) that works fine with FW800 on a dual PMG5??

View 14 Replies View RelatedSo the time has come that I bought a 5D Mark II and have begun editing a lot of HD footage, and my Mac Pro's current hard drive setup will not suffice. My current setup: Bay 1 = WD Raptor X 150GB 10,000RPM (OS, Final Cut Studio 2, Adobe CS3, etc) Bay 2 = Apple-supplied WD 320GB 7200RPM (Music/iPhoto libraries, small Windows partition) Bay 3 = Samsung Spinpoint 500GB 7200RPM (Media dump/scratch disk for editing, as well as my spillover Applications folder, etc) Bay 4 = Empty I'm looking to revamp this setup, as I'm struggling in many ways. First off, my main boot drive being the Raptor 10,000RPM was a dumb idea. Yes, it is faster, but I can't install the full OS X, FCS2, CS3 packages and my regular cornucopia of apps without leaving ~1-5GB free. I feel that this kills any speed gain because the drive is full to the brim, and for such a minimal speed increase I'm working with a very very low ceiling of free space. I'm considering ditching this and going with a bigger 7200rpm drive so I don't have to worry about running with a filled up drive again. Here's my idea. I was thinking of getting a 1 or 1.5TB 7200RPM drive to run the OS on and also store my footage, keep all my applications, downloads, etc. Then I could move my 150GB Raptor X out to bay 4 and make that my project scratch disk for video editing(not sure it'd be big enough for larger projects). And then if I had any money left, I would axe the 320 and put another 1TB in its place. Or I could save money and get that new nVidia card for the Mac Pro (I still have the stock HD2600).
I boot windows and play games, but rarely. Would this upgraded video card help with video editing or rendering effects significantly enough to justify the ~$400 pricetag? Or should I save my money and buy camera equipment? More importantly, any recommendations for the quickest/most reliable 1-1.5TB drive out there? or should I avoid them? I don't want to spend a ton of money so I'm not looking to do expensive RAID setups or anything, i'm not editing uncompressed.
Need some recommendations to doing full image backups of my entire hard drive.I currently use Acronis TrueImage 11 for my PC's but since i have a Macbook, i need to be able to backup both my HFSJ partition (OS X) and my NTFS boot camp partition (Vista).Acronis TI does not read HFSJ partitons and will only backup my NTFS partition.Simply put. I want to have backup images of my entire drive in the event my drive takes a dump.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on restoring a Time Machine backup from Leopard to a clean installation of Snow Leopard. The only problem I'm facing is that the Leopard backup is on a case-sensitive drive (and the Snow Leopard drive is set up, by default, as case-ignorant).
I have scoured the Web the last two days and have not found a definitive answer to my question: Is there a way to transfer the data from the Time Machine backup on the case-sensitive drive to the case-ignorant Snow Leopard drive?
Yesterday I ran across a tutorial explaining how this might be accomplished using SuperDuper! but a commenter explained that Disk Utility could be used and was much easier.
I tried the Disk Utility method but it didn't work, and I ran out of time to give the SuperDuper! option a try. Does anyone know if it, or even Carbon Copy Cloner, might solve my problem?
So a friends girlfriend tossed, as in threw, her older ibook g4. You ask why? Well she was mad at it so she punched the screen and it cracked, so she gave it a quick toss because the screen cracked. So I get to be the one to try to salvage the harddrive. I have the ibook torn apart, my macbook, a macmini and an external usb IDE harddrive enclosure at my disposal.
So I tried to target it through my macbook by holding down T and booting up the ibook. Hard drive clicks and spins, but nothing mounts on my macbook. So I bought an external USB for the ibook harddrive. My macbook won't see it when connected. So does this mean a bad drive? Do the older drives have to be connected by firewire?
i can't install program adobe my mac os 10.6.8 when i install mac say ' Installation to case sensitive drive is not supported. choose a different drive location to install' all the time i have one drive! i don't understand. How i can install?

I contacted apple to argue for their original quote which is $1200, the first representative couldn't get it done since he didn't have the authority, but he got me to talk with a senior advisor, after probably 1 hour arguement, she said $900 would be the bottom line. Then I mentioned i had my LB replaced last year for $310 due to the KNOWN video card issue, and most importantly there are no physical damages on on my computer back then, whcih means i'm eligible for the refund policy, also I stated an issue I posted here [URL] then she agreed to reduce the quote to $600, so what do u guys think, is it worth going for it?

I have latest iTunes 10.6.1 and its library located on external drive, connected by FW800.
System properties -> Energy saver -> Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible is On Everything works perfect in case of local access.
Also in case library's drive sleeps, it takes just several seconds more in order to wake drive. But remote access works only in case the drive is waked somehow. I.e. if Home Sharing is enabled and drive sleeps I cannot get access to the content from remote iTunes or Apple TV.
I think it is a bug, remote access shall be not broken in case the drive is sleeping. Also it is known, some forums explain that you shall never put external drives in sleep mode in case this drive used for iTunes Home Sharing [URL]

Tore open my WD MyBook to replace the internal disk, and after piecing it back together, it no longer mounts in Finder. Disk Utility is also blind to it-- in fact the only thing that will see it at all is System Profiler.

Sometimes, after the Mybook is not used for a while, it will shut down, to the point that, only unplugging both the firewire AND power to the Mybook will restart it. How do I get this thing to reboot and show up on my desktop/finder again? It's quite frustrating w/ itunes, as the songs wont play at all if the HD shuts down.
