Hardware :: USB Hub Connecting To An External HDD?
Nov 16, 2010
My WD My Book 3.0 only has one USB 3.0 Micro port. I need two ports. Will a USB hub work with an external hard drive? I already have a USB 2.0 hub, but i need to purchase a USB female to USB 3.0 micro adapter. I wanted to make sure it will work before buying it.
I just got a Samsung 2333sw monitor. When I plug into my 128GB SSD Rev B, it automatically uses the samsung as 2nd monitor. The screen is fully covered.
But when I select mirror (using the samsung as primary screen and turned the brightness of my MBA to the lowest), the samsung LCD picture is not clear and the screen is like 4:3.
Does this means that MBA can't support ext LCD as primary screen at 1080 resolution?
How about for those who has the new Apple 24" Cinema display? Can you use that as primary screen?
I've recently bought my first MBP and since I also have a Dell 27' monitor, I'd like to hook the MBP up to the big screen for movies and photo processings.
So given that mini displayport is the only video-out option on MBP and my Dell monitor only has a soundbar speaker (powered by the monitor but not built in), even if I got a mini displayport to HDMI cable (with audio capability) I would still need to connect that soundbar speaker to my MBP via the audio cable to get the sound right?
I've had a 500GB WD My Passport for about 2 months now. It was working perfectly, until last week when it didn't want to connect properly (i.e. I would connect it 10 times, and about 6 of the times it would work). Now, it doesn't seem to connect at all. I can feel the HDD vibrating inside, so it is getting power, but it's not showing at all. What's very weird is that it doesn't even show on Disk Utility. I'm completely lost as to what I should do. I need to either get it to work again or reformat it somehow, because I'm going on a trip next week and need the space on it.
I bought a MBP and now want to create a office setup where I could use larger monitor, an external keyboard, and mouse for using the same MBP.
1. How to do this setup ? Is hooking an external monitor to DVI port to MBP good enough ? Can I use usb keyboard and mouse to connect to MBP ? Anything else ?
Can you please share your setup and anything that I should take care of.
Can you connect two external monitors (1 in portrait and 1 in landscape mode) to new MacBook Pro 15 RD or perhaps a new iMac? Currently using two Dell monitors (27 and 24 in) in Landscape and portrait modes respectively. Looking to get rid of the PC and replace with new MBP RD.

I got an 1.33 Ghz G4 iBook logic board, given to me as a working part. However, nothing else that goes along. I do have all the basic cabling such as speaker and power button, flex cables and such. Also got myself a new external AC power adapter. Now, I do not intend to use this as a laptop, thus, I will not be looking for a battery, just AC use. However, there's a big problem, I've no screen. I know there's this software hack that allows to connect an external display, in order to have a "mirroring" desktop.
I suppose that'd be achievable if I had the original screen to actually do the hack, but I don't have it. So, is there a way that I can just directly connect an external display and completely forget about the internal one? One more thing, suppose I can't do what I have in mind, if I actually found and borrowed an internal display, would I be alright if after the hack I give the internal display back to it's owner and continue with the external?
I want to hook up my new monitor with my 21" Imac. I have bought this mini displayport to dvi adapter. [URL]. What dvi cable should I buy? The adapter is dvid single link, but according to wikipedia the conector is dual link?
I have been trying to set-up an external LCD tv to my 13in MacBook Pro (mid-2010). I am connecting it through a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter. But on the the 32" Dynex LCD the top menu bar and a lil bit on the bottom and sides are not showing and I cant figure out how to adjust the screen. The resolution is 720p.
So I just bought a SimpleTech Simple Drive 60gb to use on my MacBook with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I followed the instructions and plugged the Mini-B part of the USB cable in the hard drive and the other end of the USB plug in my MacBook. The instructions tell me I am supposed to see the drive pop up on my desktop but I see absolutely nothing.
Hi- I have an ibook G4 (mid 2005). I'd like to be able to connect it to my new 22" external display so that I can have dual monitors. However, the external display plug obviously does not fit into the slot in the ibook.
Does anybody know the name of the converter cable I would need to buy in order to connect the external display to my ibook? And roughly how much these cost?
I have just acquired a Dell 22' Monitor. I want to hook iy up to my MacBook Pro 15". I know I need a DisplayPort to DVI adapter But what kind of cable to I need? DVI-D Single? DVI-D Dual?
Since I am going to run an external monitor is there a way to make this work with the lid of the MacBook Pro closed?
I ordered a VGA cable and a minidisplayport to VGA adapter from ebay, and my lcd keeps saying no signal when I plug in all the cables. I am at a loss as to how to get this to work.
I moved to an iMac from PC 3 months ago, and installed my NAS server as an externally mounted drive, with password protected user logon, and a separate media folder for all itunes music, videos etc, and all photo storage.
This worked fine for a couple of months, and seemed to connect automatically at startup I don't recall any issues at all. That changed a few weeks ago, and each session I now need to re-connect by logging on to the NAS with password. The consquence is that the Home drive keeps being remapped to the internal HD, and the itunes media storage location to the same internal HD, not the NAS.

I'm a professional composer. I've just re-done my studio set up and it looks like this,The two thunderbolt displays seem to work perfectly and I've had no complaints with them. I just can't get the TV to be that 4th monitor. I'd like to flick the video I'm working with up to the TV above to give my desktop ample room. I've tried two things so far: (1) a mini display port to HDMI cable, and (2) a mini display port to VGA to HDMI (crazy, I know). Is there any way I can get this to work? Any alternatives? Â
I have had some serious isues with my Macbook Pro (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM - Mac OS Version 10.5.7) and a Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme external hard drive. Twice in the last month I have cooked the logic board by plugging in the FW drive into the FW port on my laptop. The first time they replaced the logic board without testing my hard drive. The second time they asked me to bring in my new external hard drive.
They've checked out both the 2nd logic board and the new hard drive numerous times and say everything works fine... Should it make any difference if the external drive is plugged into a wall outlet before I connect the laptop to the external drive? Or would it make a difference if the laptop is powered up before plugging in the FW drive?
Could you please check if I have all the cables necessary to hook up my Macbook Pro 17" to this Vizio monitor? I got the mini display port to HDMI converter, and an HDMI cable. Is there anything else I need or do you have recommendations for a different brand? I am buying a Vizio 25.5" monitor: [URL]. Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter: [URL]. I'm wondering if the speed difference with Firewire 400 over USB 2.0 is worth the extra $30. I'll primarily be using this for Time Machine backup, but also to store other large files when necessary.
I already have an Airport Extreme Base Station which has a shared printer connected by USB. I have an external hardrive which I also wanted to access wirelessly. Since my Airport's USB is already taken by the Printer, can I buy an Airport Express and use that to access an External Hard Drive?
I have been using my MBP (2010, i7 17" model) with a 24" HP external HDMI LCD monitor. The connection is via the Apple's Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. It was working perfectly the first day I tried. However, when I connected the external monitor to the MBP yesterday, I found that the LCD screen of the external monitor was blinking. It lasted for about 5 minutes and then the problem was gone by itself. I have just reconnected my MBP to the monitor again. The problem reappears. Anybody knows what is going on and how to fix it?
I just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro as some of you saw in a recent post. My external hard drive is connected to a 400 firewire port but the new mbp's have 800 firewire ports. I have an adapter but for some reason the external doesn't show up. It works on my old macbook but not on this new one, doesn't even show up in the disk utilities. Do the fire wire ports have to match up in speed? Can my backup and the files be saved?
I am using IMac late 2011 model core i5 4gb ram. I recently bought seagate freeagent goflex desk 2tb version and I am using it as time machine. but when it is connected system is freezing frequently and some times I am getting kernel panic error but after disconnecting it IMac runs smoothly I used my system with out connecting for few days and there is no problem at all but when i am connecting and using it all this happens again. Another thing i am also using freeagent goflex portable drive for last one year and I did not experienced such problems at all.
I have used my ultimate 11" on usual mirrored display on battery power and in clamshell mode.
A few hours ago, I was running many apps in mirrored mood and my air just began to lag so badly after an hour. Expose is slow as well as surfing and clicking. I wondered what happened. Then I plug back power supply and close the lid of Air, hence running in clamshell mode. It then returned to full speed.
Please help explain to me if title is true. It is disturbing to learn that plugging into to ext monitor could lag.
I've had this very, very strange issue occurring over the past few days now where recently created files go missing or updated files revert back to earlier versions. It happens when I disconnect from my Time Machine external LaCie drive after backup. Even apps went missing and I had to reinstall them. It's like my machine is automatically reverted to two days earlier when I disconnect the external drive. When it started:
The first time I experienced the problem was *after* I added my Macintosh HD (internal) drive as an exclusion to the Spotlight list of excluded drives/folders. I did this because my Mail app would not allow me to select "Entire Message" when searching mail folders. A popular thread told me that if I added and then removed my (internal) hard drive to/from Spotlight, that it would re-index it, thereby finding the mail files again allowing me to search the message bodies. That's when the files and apps disappeared and/or reverted to previous versions. Again, the files reappear after I plug into the external Time Machine (LaCie) drive. But when I disconnect - they're gone! Other preferences have disappeared too - I've been prompted to re-enter serial #s I entered days prior for new software I added.

I have connected my Aluminium Macbook (2008) to my HDTV via a Mini Display to HD port. This works fine when I mirror the image from my macbook. When I turn off mirror image however (IE effectively having two seperate screens) my internet slows down drastically. In some cases it also disconnects. This issue is resolved by turning on the mirror screen button, or unplugging the cable from the laptop.
Bought the new iMac. I have one La Cie 1-TB external HD from previous Mac that I want to hook up to this new one, plus I want to daisy chain a La Cie 160g HD to that one. What driver do I need, and how do I hook them all up?
I have a MacBook pro. I want to store media on an external hard drive. Can I connect my G Drive external hard drive to my existing home network? I have AT&T internet provider, and their modem (residential gateway) only has ethernet ports.Â
