Hardware :: Superdrive Not Recognized / Supported?
Mar 15, 2005
lets get this out of the way: I'm running Mac OS 10.3.8 on my Powermac G5, with a "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GWA-4082B" Superdrive in it.
Initially, Itunes would not recognize this drive as a burner, and when attempting to burn a disc it gives me the notice "disc burner or software not found" When going into itunes preferences I get the message "No supported Disc burners found" beside where it normally says which kind of burner I have.
So i figured I'd see if it was the burner, or itunes that was giving me the problem. I put in a blank CD-R disc, and when the window popped up asking what to do with the blank CD i inserted, i chose to open Finder. It then spit out the disc and gave me the error message The disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025)This is NOT the drive that originally came with the computer, but it WAS installed by an official apple dealer. I originally had issues with the system booting from CD, and one thing they tried was ordering a new superdrive for me and installing it. The drive also read's any normal cd's fine though.
I'm not too keen on sending it back again.

Macbookair Superdrive is only supported for system without a drive ex mac mini, MBA and MBP retina I am surprise that i tested on my Imac intel 3.1 bootcamp win7 - It supported both drive internal and external connected to USB.
Some window user friend tease me for MAc OS unable to handle 2 drive - It is true and embrarres that mac os can't even detect it at all and worst it is made from APPLE.

I've used iDVD on many occasions already, but today I got an error that's bizarre: iDVD 7.0.4 says my MBP 13 2010 does not have a supported SuperDrive.
Does Apple have Bugzilla or some other problem-tracking system set up anywhere on the Web so that I might check whether this is a known problem?

I just replaced my dead superdrive with a panasonic UJ845B in my 15 inch Powerbook (titanium) 1ghz
System preferences says there's no information found. Unfortunately, my rampant searches on the internet have found nothing useful regarding this, so I can only assume a couple things...
1. The connection cable is bad somehow, though it powers up.
2. The drive just isn't compatable, despite it being advertised as compatable.
3. The powerbook has a conflict with the UJ845B being set to master with no conventional method to change it to slave other than to run some firmware.
Before I go nuts replacing cables and dismantling this thing again, I'd like to know if anyone else has had issues with replacing their superdrives. Perhaps not necessarily the same drive, but any experience where the system preferences reports no information found. It might not be as hard as I am imagining to get this thing functional.

The old one crapped out on me, so I installed one from OWC on a iMac6,1, I have taken it apart many times to disconnect it and reconnect it. Could the ribbon be bad? If so, where can I get a part number? Or is it a generic ribbon for superdrives?

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

i was wondering if someone can clarify what this driver update means. Its been stated in many websites that it will have windows support. Does that mean i can just plug this monitor into my windows machine and everything will work. Like supported in Mac OS X?
Or does this really mean, running bootcamp is the only way.after that driver update was release I got my hope up high in regards to me buying this display.

My old printer died and when I tried to hook up a new printer, it would not work. I contacted Apple but my "legacy" machine was no longer supported and I needed to pick a machine that is (was) supported. Is there a list of printers I can find that will work with my legacy machine?

I paid for and downloaded the Lion my version is 10.7.4?My MS word is no longer supported. I am freaking out because of my college papers. I apparently didn't read directions too much to see it would no longer support. I am willing to buy new Microsoft word so it's supported if I can do so. Any suggestions or tips would help. I went to App Store to purchase but I have no clue on what to buy. Nothing on my computer that is MS is supported. I just need to be able to email some documents to other people that is MS word and write my papers on ms word.

after being FORCED to upgrade my 2007 2.66 Dual Core Xeon to Lion in order to migrate my iPhone/MobileMe stuff to iCloud, my dual-screen desktop is now mired in this inane implementation of 'full-screen' mode in Lion. I won't even start with that... Even worse, the full-screen mode button in the upper right corner of windows is the area I (previously) used to select a different window when multiple browser windows are up. It's driving me crazy, and I wish there was some sort of 'Spaces' implementation that is similar to what we had. But looking forward to hoping that perhaps Mountain Lion will fix the ills of Lion, I now see that only the 2008 Mac Pro towers will be supported, even though they are nearly identical in architecture (I think). Even our 2007 iMac is supported!
So, after having been forced away from Leopard (which was working for me just fine, thank you), I now find myself being left out on the doorstep by Apple with my high-end Mac Pro, for no apparent reason. Is anyone else out there in this situation? Does anyone else out there know a hack out of this full screen mode fiasco? It seems to me that Apple's decision to leave behind the first generation Intel Mac Pro is arbitrary at best, one of those indirect pokes to try and get us to upgrade hardware. It would be one thing if the computer wasn't fully functional in this 'day and age', but it *is* fully functional.

I recorded bunch of video with iPhone 3GS and then edited a 12min quicktime movie from the clips. Problem is that the file size became HUGE, 1,24GB! How can it become so large file? Even one of the raw clips was 15min and 399MB. I just wanted to export the movie (with quicktime) to my Mac with the same quality as the iPhone recording quality. Here's the quicktime export settings details that I exported the movie:
-Compression type: H.264
-Frame Rate: Current
-Key Frames: All
-Compressor quality: Best
-Encoding: Best quality
-Data rate: Automatic
Filter: None
Size
-Dimensions: Current 640 x 480
Sound
-Format: Linear PCM
-Channels: Stereo (L R)
-Rate: 48.000kHz
-Render settings: Best
-Sample size: 16-bit
-Little Endian

Just thought I'd let all you out there know I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my Mid-2007 MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz C2D[Santa Rosa]; 2 GB DDR2; 160 Gig HDD) - and I did it all for about 40 bucks. It was a bitch, but after two days of messin' around and countless Google searches later (gotta love the Touch), viola: full 64-bit Windows 7 on my "unsupported" Mac.
First thing I had to do was get rid of that old Tiger. Snow Leopard for 30 bucks is a great deal, and installing is easy. My original intention was to do a clean install, but I actually accidentally upgraded directly from Tiger to SL, which I didn't think was possible. I went with this at first, but ultimately opted toward the clean install for various reasons. Now, with the easy part behind me, it was time to install 7...

I just bought a "GE Ergonomic Dual Scroll Optical Mouse" (item number HO97769 rev. 7) for my shiny new laptop. However, the install cd that came with the mouse is only for windows and to make matters worse, it is a small cd and will only work with a tray loading cd drive.
I have looked around the internet a bit to find the mac software for this mouse with no luck. It is a really nice mouse and I'd hate to only use 3 of the 6 buttons on it. Do you know if this mouse is even supported in Mac OS X? If so, where can I download the driver for it.
