Hardware :: Superdrive UJ845B Isn't Recognized?
Dec 31, 2005
I just replaced my dead superdrive with a panasonic UJ845B in my 15 inch Powerbook (titanium) 1ghz
System preferences says there's no information found. Unfortunately, my rampant searches on the internet have found nothing useful regarding this, so I can only assume a couple things...
1. The connection cable is bad somehow, though it powers up.
2. The drive just isn't compatable, despite it being advertised as compatable.
3. The powerbook has a conflict with the UJ845B being set to master with no conventional method to change it to slave other than to run some firmware.
Before I go nuts replacing cables and dismantling this thing again, I'd like to know if anyone else has had issues with replacing their superdrives. Perhaps not necessarily the same drive, but any experience where the system preferences reports no information found. It might not be as hard as I am imagining to get this thing functional.

lets get this out of the way: I'm running Mac OS 10.3.8 on my Powermac G5, with a "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GWA-4082B" Superdrive in it.
Initially, Itunes would not recognize this drive as a burner, and when attempting to burn a disc it gives me the notice "disc burner or software not found" When going into itunes preferences I get the message "No supported Disc burners found" beside where it normally says which kind of burner I have.
So i figured I'd see if it was the burner, or itunes that was giving me the problem. I put in a blank CD-R disc, and when the window popped up asking what to do with the blank CD i inserted, i chose to open Finder. It then spit out the disc and gave me the error message The disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025)This is NOT the drive that originally came with the computer, but it WAS installed by an official apple dealer. I originally had issues with the system booting from CD, and one thing they tried was ordering a new superdrive for me and installing it. The drive also read's any normal cd's fine though.
I'm not too keen on sending it back again.

The old one crapped out on me, so I installed one from OWC on a iMac6,1, I have taken it apart many times to disconnect it and reconnect it. Could the ribbon be bad? If so, where can I get a part number? Or is it a generic ribbon for superdrives?

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

I want to add a second SuperDrive to my Mac Pro and am trying to decide if I should git the Pioneer DVR-115D or go with a different drive. Or maybe go with a SATA drive and utilize one of the two additional SATA ports that are unused. Any ideas?

Does anyone else have the same issue when you use the superdrive?
My goodness, it's crazy loud! Is it because it's missing a lot of it's housing so it can do the fun thing with the door?

I have a new Mac Pro coming tomorrow. My current PowerMac is dead, so I'm planning on doing the Migration Assistant by putting in my old Drive into the new Mac Pro. The question I have is: Is it worth putting in my old Superdrive into the 2nd slot? Even it is not the newer 16x speed?

I've done searches here on this topic, and it seems like everyone gave in and picked up the Superdrive.
I've made a partition using bootcamp assistant, and I have an .iso of the legal disk. I used to install a VMware image, but I plan to replace it with the bootcamp image once I get that done; haven't even activated windows.
I have installed rEFIt; have the .iso and the files copied from the iso into the BOOTCAMP partition; but when it tries to boot to there, it complains about not being a system disk, or some such. One poster noted having two entries in rEFIt, and the useful one had something about a boot/cdboot.efi option, but I don't see that option in rEFIt anywhere.
Has anyone else made progress on this?
Also, it'd be great if one of these things could be made sticky, given the hassle it seems to be, and the several threads that have cropped up with questions, and not much in the way of answers.

i know that the superdrive cannot be connected to the mini Via USB, which is a pain, but what if i were to buy the superdrive, take it apart and hook it up to my mini, replacing the Combo Drive already in there, Would that work i'm as assuming that it would all be compatible.

Not as impossible as everyone says, and no hardware modding needed. Note this is currently any PC, not any Mac - it works on my MacBook Pro in Boot camp, but I haven't tried doing this in OS X yet. I will do tonight if I have time. Here's instructions anyway: [URL]

So I've recently been trying to burn my ubuntu.iso to a CD, but every time I insert a blank CD the superdrive holds it for a few seconds then just spits it back out. I've tried to burn it with Disk Utility and Toast 9, but it just says it's waiting for the Superdrive.

Anyone using anything decent or just chucking it in your bag and hoping it doesn't get scratched/dropped?
Currently using a modded leather square CD storage thingie, but it's a bit thick, kind of defeats the purpose. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fixed USB cable which gets snagged.
Strange that the usual suspects (Tucano etc.) haven't made a custom case for this peripheral.

I am having trouble getting any DVDs to burn on my 2.2GHz SR MBP. I have tried using Toast as well as the Finder and I keep getting an error message. I have tried restarting the computer and trying a different brand of DVD. The drive can read DVDs just fine but I can't seem to burn anything successfully. This happened several months ago but went away when I retried burning the disk.

I have a G5 PowerMac and it has a SuperDrive. I can still watch DVDs but I cannot burn them. When I put in a blank it just spits them out. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but my iDVD is not compatable with the version of OSX I am running. I can't even burn music onto a DVD from itunes. CDs work fine though.

Sorry if this is a redundant question but how do you boot off a MBA superdrive.. does the disc show up on the desktop and you just choose to install it? I don't get what is happening internally on an Air.
I've never tried booting off USB before, in all my years on Mac, including the time I tried, but failed to boot off USB on a 1998 iMac G3 with no firewire.
MBA's have some superior USB power, right?
