I have an airport network that shares my internet and HDD wirelessly with a mini and MBP. The MBP works fine until the mini joins the network. As soon as the mini is on, the MBP can no longer access the internet or HDD but remains connected to the network.
I have tried reseting and restarting in various ways. Have even reserved MAC address for both. Am using 'share a single IP address'.
I have a Mac Mini with 10.6.x Onec in a while, especially when restart Airport Extreme for upgrade or something else (both are connected with ethernet cable cat5e) ALL PC's on the network having problem accessing Mac Mini Server while All MACs are fine and can access all folders no problem. Usually takes about 3-4 min for PC to connect to server. Then once it is connected (it loads all folder and files in that current window on the PC) i can go from folder to folder with no delays. However if i close the window with all folders then again i have to wait for around 3 min. to load everything all over again. AFP and SMB are ON. Today i made an experiment and turned SMB off and the problem still excist with the difference that after 3-4 min delay no folders were shown.
It seems that the PCs have hard time establishing connection with the server which is weird that Macs don't have that problem. It must be something with the setting of Mac MIni. Other wise i have no problem accessing Internet so the routher is working fine. DHCP is ON on the AP Extreme.

I'm trying to prevent my Mac from connecting to any other Network than my own. However, it always grabs the neighbors. How can I specify that I do not want to be on any other one than my own. It does not seem that there is this option in the Network Settings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI work in a cross platform environment (windows/mac) where we typically save common files to a shared network drive. I've found when I save a file directly from excel (as opposed to saving it locally, then copying it over) it created an invisible ._filename file in the same directory. I know it's a property/resource file for the file that I just created, but it's a little confusing for some windows users and just clutters up the share directory. Is there any way to prevent the creation of the ._filename file while still saving directly from excel?
(I'd prefer not to save locally, then move to network drive - it's cleaner for me if I can just save directly) So far, I've found that this only happens with MS Office. I've opened a sql file in textwrangler and komodo, edited it, and saved it to the network and no invisible files are created.
NOTE: this is different the the fix that apple had published regarding not creating DS_Store files - that refers to copying files from the finder to a network drive and I don't have any problems with that.
Im setting up my new 27" iMac, coming from a G5 PowerMac and am having an extremely difficult time setting up the network to see another Mac computer in the same room.
I am able to setup the File Sharing and I can see the hard disk drives that Ive allowed but on my old setup, I was able to view EVERYTHING on the networked Mac and I didn't even add them all to the File Sharing. I don't know how I did it but I can't seem to replicate it.
What is it that I'm not doing right?
I recently noticed a "device" in Finder called "imac 4". If I click on details, it says PC Server. If I go to the Sidebar preferences, and uncheck Bon Jour, then it disappears, so that tells me it has something to do with this. I have read a little on what this is,and it has to do with file sharing on networks, or shared printers and such. I haven't done anything new that I can think of, so I'm wondering why it just started showing up. Could someone be accessing my network? It is a secured network with an AirPort base station.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been struggling all week trying to share a drive out from a mac and mount it remotely onto a windows 7 machine. Also I haven't been able to see any of my macs in the network in windows explorer on the windows 7 machine.
I found this somewhere else on the web so can't take the credit, but it works for me and I can see my whole network, macs, windows and shared folders from either, all on windows 7 now.
I'm working on a friend's MPB and when ever I try to connect to it from mine (I created the network from my MPB which is almost identical to his), His MPB shows up in finder, but it always says "Connecting..." and then "Connection Failed". Sharing is enabled on his MPB and the firewall is disabled. I have been through everything that I can think of to try and fix this, short of re-installing Leopard. His MBP came with Leopard pre-installed, so there is no need to worry about the upgrade messing things up. I have checked from a MacBook and that one cannot connect either, but both connect to mine with no problems.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently got a MacBook to replace my Toshiba WinXP machine. I use a Mini with 3 external drives as a server, to which the laptop is backed up. The drives are accessed using Sharepoints. With XP I had no problems backing up and accessing the files as needed. With the MacBook I bumped into a variety of permission errors when I tried to access the files from the server. I finally checked "Ignore Ownership" and that seems to have made the files available, but I still get the do not enter icon on the directories. Clicking on the directory allows it to open, but it is annoying. My wife has the same problem, first with her ibook and now with her new MacBook. It causes problems with certain applications, as well.

I have no idea how to figure out why they are blocked or how to unblock them without access to my aiport. Anyone have any suggestions?

I can run the windows (and/or apple) Airport Utility and see and configure the TC within the utility but I cannot access it like a network drive on the XP box. I thought I saw somewhere to enter a workgroup name for PC networks but can't find it now.

I am having trouble accessing files with my brothers MBP (running latest v of leopard) from an external HD (FAT32 format) plugged into my iMac (also running latest leopard.) I have tried logging in as myself on the MBP, but all that appears is my main hard disk and my home folder.

I have a USB External HD attached to my AEBS. I am able to see this drive within my own network, but I would like to be able to access this drive from the internet. Unfortunately I still use Windows computers, but they are the last to go everything else I have is Apple. My Drive is formatted in Fat32 and I read a post on here from March or May of this year that said I just had to open my computer and type the static IP address into the address bar, but I cannot get this to work.

Has anyone successfully done this? I would like to type in an address and have it go directly to the drive. I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?
Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.
My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.
Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?
Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.
I have the current generation $599 Mac Mini, with Nvidia graphics (just to clarify the model).
My wireless network is setup from an Airport Express.
My iMac, Powerbook, iPhones, Apple TV, Wii, etc. can all stay connected without problem.
However, my Mac Mini loses the connection constantly. It shows full signal, but then it drops out 100 percent for a few minutes, nonstop all day. It makes it completely useless effectively.
What kind of settings and things could I try to change?
Or, is this likely a hardware issue?
I'm considering upgrading to a new mini, mostly so I can play Diablo III which needs more graphics than my current one.But I need iWeb to support my website.I read someplace that the new mini can use a cd/dvd drive from a networked computer.so can I use the drive on the old (over my home wireless network) which is running 10.5.8 to play Diablo III on the new which will run Lion?Also, can I access iweb on the old mini from the new, or will I have to use it separately?

I am wondering if I am getting a good transfer rate on my time capsule. (Using leopard). If I alt (option) click on the airport icon on the top of the screen, I can get details to my network. One of the details is transfer. I am assuming this is the speed of my network. Do you know what this is measured in? When I have the time capsule as a G router I get a transfer of 130. When I have the TC as an N router, I get a transfer of 200 - 264. Can anyone tell me if these numbers are good, or do I need to do something to get the numbers closer to where they should be.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently upgraded my wireless network to N+ using a Belkin Modem Router. Security is WPA2-PSK, and MAC access is disabled. All MacBooks (Leopard & Tiger), PCs (XP) and iphones connect without any problem, however my daughter's PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11, and with the most recent Airport software, can't connect to the network. The password prompt when selecting the network only allows for entering a WEP password.

Is this possible? Will I have to downgrade my network to G? Also, how do I go about doing this? My plan is to plug them into Ethernet spots throughout the house, but I don't want to have 3 different networks, so how do I make them wireless extenders as opposed to standalone routers?
Would it be worth it just to spring for a new Airport Express (that supports N)? If I do that, do I need to plug it into Ethernet to extend my signal, or will it be able to pick up the signal wirelessly and then extend it?
