Recently, the external harddrive I use as general data collector started developing a very interesting problem. At first, it would start ejecting itself for no good reason, and now, it cannot be ejected anymore once plugged in. I have tried disc utility without much success as even verifying the disc crashes disc utility, repair does not work either. here the console file copy

As far as i can see i have quite all apps except installer so i cant find a way to get out of this cycle.

Just received my crucial m225 256 GB and installed it today. Let me tell you, it's amazingly fast. Came with updated firmware so I didn't have to do anything. The firmware has Garbage Collection which will do its own garbage collection when the system is idle so there is no need for manually trimming it yourself. This is great for MACs since it doesn't support trim ANYWAYS. I used super duper! to make a carbon copy of my old hard drive and I was set. I just installed windows and I've never seen windows install so quick. It took the normal time to expand the files due to the CD rom speed but once that was done, the install was basically done. I was doing HW and I looked up and the system was already restarting.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a G5, 1.8Ghz computer with OS 10.5.8 installed. Some problems developed and I tried to run Disk Warrior. The disk shows up on the desktop. but won't start when I select either the "C" key or use the option key. The same thing happens when I use an external drive that has the startup drive cloned several months ago. When I use the Option key only the original startup volume appears. When I use the "C" for Disk Warrior the the system folder appears and switches with a Question mark. Again when I try to boot from the OS 10.5 install disk, I have the flashing folder when I hold the "C" down. The same problem I had with Disk Warrior.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a new Hitachi 1tb bare drive and have been trying to format it through Disk Utility. I have it connected to my iMac system using a Newertech USB 2.0 drive connector.The new drive appears in Disk Utility, and when I go through the "Erase" tab and set if up as Journaled - the system seems to go into formatting mode for about ten minutes and then I get an error and I have to Force Quit the Disk Utility.

Actually, still moving into it from the old one, haven't spent allot of time on it, hard to get out of the old one with my photoshop work. Anyhow, whats a good external speaker system for it? I find myself with the volume maxed out on the internal iMac speakers now, don't think it's too good to keep doing that. Is the amp in the iMac my only control over volume? Can I buy a speaker system of very good quality that may have amps within them so I can get more volume to them? I have a real top end stand alone stereo system, but doubt the iMac iTunes can be run through that.
I started using my macbook pro with an external monitor in mirror mode but I can't seem to unplug the power when I'm in this state, it automatically goes to sleep. I want to be able to unplug my laptop when its fully charged since its recommended to do so to preserve the battery life...but it doesn't seem like I can when using it this way. Or is it really not that big of a deal to unplug your battery every time it's fully charged. Are Apply batteries doomed to poop out eventually no matter what? I suppose turning it off at the end of work day could recoup damage?

View 19 Replies View RelatedI have a 1TB external HD being used for media. I have it connected to a Mac Mini which until recently was running Snow Leopard Client quite happily. This is my living room media centre. Last week I moved the Mini to SL Server for unrelated reasons. The external drive is now stuck as a "Read-only filesystem". I have tried every method known to Google and man to open the drive to no avail.
Some things you should know:
-The drive is called 'Monkey'
-*any* commands entered with sudo or as root that target Monkey are returned negatively as a result of 'read-only filesystem'. This includes chmod, chown, chflags, etc.
-diskutil cannot modify the volume: 'read-only filesystem'
-vsdbutil cannot modify the volume: something about the automount routine
-running 'ls -alO' produces the following (baffling) echo:
drwxrwxrwx 18 mediacentre staff - 680 27Nov 00:37 Monkey
This means that the volume apparently is fully read-write by all users and does belong to my admin user ("mediacentre") and should be accessible by other users of the machine and there are no flags? No Access? The drive has not been physically jumped to read-only (I even checked in case a housemate way playing a prank) and nothing has changed other than the computer which initially formatted the disk out of the box (i.e. the original owner was 'that' root) has been replaced. I've backed up the disk and am prepared to reformat the dang thing, but I can't even do that, since nothing can target my mystical read-only volume!

I've been noticing in that time that whenever I have the HD mounted my system seems to run slower in that it has lots of sporadic hang ups. I get the spinning beachball in all sorts of programs from Safari to Microsoft Word.

However whenever I want to use the drive to move files around with XP the drive does not show up in my computer. XP recognizes the connection of the hard drive and shows the name of the hard drive connected to the computer when you look at the USB BUSes but still it is not in My Computer. I have everything up to date. I have even partitioned the External Hard Drive so part of it wasn't even touched by Time Machine. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba 160 GB USB external HDD (no power supply required) that I use simply as a backup for some Windows programs when I am using my virtual machine. It required a double USB cable and its icon showed on both the Windows and iMAC screen until a day or so ago. It is a functioning unit when I put it on a separate PC. I have not been able to correct the problem and in viewing some of the forum items I keep seeing suggestions to view the 'System Preferences --> general' - I do not see a 'general' nor any reference in the 'apple' that refers to hard drives (external or internal).

The worst of the bunch is the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition (1TB) that I have connected via FW800. The 2nd worst offender is the Seagate 750GB Free Agent connected via FW400. The most dependable appears to be a Western Digital USB drive, but it's the slowest performer. The issue is this: I either have a freeze up that requires an unplug from the Mac as well as power, then re-mount to get working again, OR, when I start up the Mac, it just hangs at the 'apple' and never fully boots. I have to unplug the drives and boot, then plug them back in after the boot. It's getting very frustrating. Do you all have a successful setup with external drives?

When I first got it, I wasn't able to move any files to my Western Digital External (that works with my previous blackbook) and my other external. It says The item '(item name)' could not be moved because 'System' (or other folder name) cannot be modified. iWork 09 and Virtual Dj don't work either. I want to reformat the hdd, but I can't do that until I backup everything, which I can't do. I tried the second solution "Type this, followed by Return: sh /etc/rc" and my Mac said could not find this directory.

I am thinking about buying an enclosure for my spare 1 TB hard drive, and using it as the location of my iTunes library, but I wondered how it works with the Mac Mini's energy-savings mode. My Mini is set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, then wake when iTunes content is requested by my Apple TV or Airport Express. I like it, because it's very energy efficient that way! In any event, I was re-installing windows on my Laptop (which is a PC) and put the old copy of windows on the external drive. I have 8gb of ram (the max for my machine) and my main internal drive is a 250 gb HD. I'm wondering if I can backup & delete files from my main drive to free up space and hopefully improve performance, and if it will cause any problems.
I plan to backup the Soundtrack Pro Loops to an external drive, which will free up about 21gb of space. Is there anything else that's safe to do this with (if this process is safe, that is.)? Can I also backup the "Previous systems" folder & delete it from my main drive?

I am thinking of removing the 120gb std hdd in the mini and replacing this with a SSD, coupled with 4GB of RAM to speed things up (will be 2.26ghz). Im guessing the capacity of this will be aroung 60-80 gb and will only be used for the OS.
