Just a quick question regarding external hard drives.
Does it matter what file system the hard drive is set to for me to be able to transfer data between the uMBP and the hard drive?
Currently, my 1TB external hard drive is in NTFS, but i understand Mac use FAT32? (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
I have a 2.13GHz 13" white Macbook (Mid-2009) with a 480MB SSD, 4GB RAM and a dying SuperDrive that frankly doesn't get used very often.
I would like to yank the SuperDrive out (I use my iMac for any physical disk work anyway), install a smaller SSD (64GB) for the OS (+ obligatory recovery) in the primary position, and place the current SSD (or a HDD) in a SuperDrive enclosure to hold all personal files (documents, videos, music, etc...)
Here is the scenario I'm contemplating.
-64GB SSD: primary position, holds OSX + recovery
-480GB SDD: mounted on /Users/[my user name]
As far OSX is concerned, there's only one 544GB filesystem, spread over two disks.
As an experienced Linux user, I would expect to have to modify /etc/fstab to do the trick. Mac OS X 10.9 actually has a /etc/fstab.hd that tells you that the file is useless. I am wondering whether it is possible to "mount" in the Unix sense partitions in the file system so that the system only appears to have one drive and also how.

I'm considering using dedicated internal drive for TimeMachine backups and an external drive for an additional backup of photos, videos. Wondering if there is an option for formatting an external drive with a file system that could be read by a PC so that I could transfer images or videos by simply plugging the external drive into the PC.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI backed up some movies for the kids onto an external drive (USB without power cord). Now when I plug it in, it does not even show up. If I try to look at it with the disk utility it sayd the file system is not recognised. Last time I accesed the disk was under leopard. Could it be that the change to lion has cut off access now?I do hear the disk start up when it plugs in and I have not seen any strange history with this disk before switching to Lion. (A drive of the same make but bigger and with power cord plus USB still works from before and after Lion). Small disk is Freecom 1TB (pocet size), Large disk is 2TB also Freecom but with powerfeed seperately.

I've had some trouble deleting a file off my external hard drive connected to my iMac. The file shows up on the mac side but doesn't appear when I switch over to windows. I've tried to uncheck the permissions of the locked file but it will not unlock it.
When I try to send it to the trash, a dialogue appears saying that it is a locked file but do you want to delete it anyway. Nothing happens when I hit continue to delete the file. Anyone have any suggestions to get rid of this file?
Try as I might, I cannot save a document, or anything to m y external hard drive that I plug into my MacBook Pro. Its my hard drvie, its NOT write protected, and I backed up all my PC files there so as to "Move to a mac" This mac will be useless if I cannot figure this out... what a pain.
It tells me that when I try to save it the hard drive is full or write protected, neither of which is true.... what could be the problem here?
I can't believe also there was no resident paint type program with the mac, and that you can't have tabs always open on Safari.
Also, I hate the way everything dissapears off my screen and I have to search through all the icons on the doc to find what I am looking for.... I really miss the start button with all my programs there for browsing... some things are definitly clunkier on the MAC..
I have an old external hard drive (5yrs) that I used on a G4. I tried to plug it into my 10.5.8 and it will not register. I tried it on 3 different computers. I am tiring to use it for work (school teacher). I have an older Mac at work that it did show up on so I can get the info off.

1- boot from my usb stick OSX 10.9 installer, select Disk Utlity and create 1x partition Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and got an error: File system formatter failed
2- boot from CMD + R and had exactly the same problem
3- tried another used but good internal HD and same problem
4- used my other macbook Retina and start the setup connecting the new seagate w/ Apricorn SATA-USB and reboot after setup. working fine after boot
5- installed that new seagate w/ 10.9 installed and working from my MB retina in the defective MB 13 and NEW ERROR:

Awhile back I bought a 500 GB Seagate FreeAgent Go external hard drive to backup my 218 GB PC. I used the automatic backup software that came with it and it works fine. After all this I purchased a MacBook Pro and now, instead of buying another drive and also considering there's plenty of space on the one I already have, I was wondering if I could possibly partition half the drive to be used as a backup with Time Machine without touching the other half. I plugged in the drive to my Mac and opened Disk Utility. It says it is a NTFS file system (I suppose that's normal).

I have a USB 2.0 hard drive that I have been using to back up movie files. It has let me transfer files from my Macbook Pro HD to it hundreds of times without any problems.
I have this .mkv file that keeps giving me an error when I try to transfer it to my external. I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0)".
I have transferred plenty of .mkv files to my external with no problems. All other files work fine when I transfer them. It will let me move my .mkv file around my Macbook Pro's internal hard drive but it won't let me transfer it to the external.
I have a folder which I deleted from my external hard drive. Whenever I empty Trash, I get the insufficient privileges error. The folder is empty.
I've tried emptying the trash, securely emptying the trash and used these Unix commands in Terminal too:
rm -rf .Trashes
rm -rf [directory]
sudo rm -rf [directory]
rmdir [directory]
I have OSX leopard as a disc image on my desktop. When I try to copy the .dmg file over to my external hard drive it copies for a while, then an error message says it can't copy it over and stops. I'm really confused as this sort of problem doesn't usually happen.
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 and I want to install Leopard. The Leopard disc image is 6.66GB.
I can't burn it to a DVD either because the discs I have are 4.7GB & the .dmg is 6.66GB. Do I need to buy a bigger DVD blank disc?
Another question is how I should burn the disc. Should I simply burn the .dmg file straight onto a DVD (if I can get one that is big enough!) using Disc Utility?
It's with sadness and deep regret that I must put my 9 year old Dual G4 out to pasture.
I picked up a mac mac mini and it will be performing nearly all the same functions as the G4, including file serving and being the Time Machine source.
Question. Today, I have my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a FW400 WD hard drive. Time Machine backs up that data to another WD FW 400 hard drive.
Moving to the mini, I'll have to make the external drives USB2. No big deal.
But purely from a set up perspective... Am I better off keeping things as is, keeping the files on an external drive and backup up to an external drive? Or should I put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on the mini hard drive? Just looking for perhaps the best setup, etc.

How do I transfer video files from one external hard drive to another external hard drive? OS X 10.9.5. I opened up each device in a finder window and tried to drag and drop from one device to the other. No luck. Next, I R-clicked on the file and requested to copy it, then R-clicked on the Finder of the destination drive, hoping to paste but that option did not present. I am able to paste a file onto the desktop from the original location but I cannot move it from there onto the destination drive. Full disclosure: I began this operation using a Windows laptop with no difficulties. Both drives are dual formatted. The destination drive is 2 Tb and has 1.5 Tb remaining space.

I've been using a LaCie Quadra 2TB Hard drive for a little over a month now.
I've been noticing in that time that whenever I have the HD mounted my system seems to run slower in that it has lots of sporadic hang ups. I get the spinning beachball in all sorts of programs from Safari to Microsoft Word.
I am of course assuming the Hard drive is to blame, so I was wondering:
Can running an external hard drive (for use with Time Machine and general storage) slow a system down (in particular applications)?
The hard drive is a 7200rpm drive and its connected via firewire 800 if that is of any importance.
I have an Iomega UltraMax 750Gb External Hard Drive set up to back up my MacBook Pro. Time Machine uses this hard drive perfectly with no problems. However whenever I want to use the drive to move files around with XP the drive does not show up in my computer. XP recognizes the connection of the hard drive and shows the name of the hard drive connected to the computer when you look at the USB BUSes but still it is not in My Computer. I have everything up to date. I have even partitioned the External Hard Drive so part of it wasn't even touched by Time Machine. Is this a problem with Time Machine formatting my external hard drive to work only for Mac
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba 160 GB USB external HDD (no power supply required) that I use simply as a backup for some Windows programs when I am using my virtual machine. It required a double USB cable and its icon showed on both the Windows and iMAC screen until a day or so ago. It is a functioning unit when I put it on a separate PC. I have not been able to correct the problem and in viewing some of the forum items I keep seeing suggestions to view the 'System Preferences --> general' - I do not see a 'general' nor any reference in the 'apple' that refers to hard drives (external or internal).

I am thinking about buying an enclosure for my spare 1 TB hard drive, and using it as the location of my iTunes library, but I wondered how it works with the Mac Mini's energy-savings mode. My Mini is set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, then wake when iTunes content is requested by my Apple TV or Airport Express. I like it, because it's very energy efficient that way! My question is, will the disks also sleep along with my computer, and will they wake properly when the computer wakes?

I want to buy a external HDD that is around 500gb in size and can transfer over files just like my normal HDD is. 100% of the time that the MBP is home it will be attached to this. I want to put almost everything there is on my laptop over onto the external hard drive except for stuff I need (which then I'd just pull it onto the desktop) when I leave the house. I'm assuming the western digital 500gb passport essential is the best buy, but I don't know much about it at all. It's only USB 2.0, which sounds like the slowest option when you throw firewire in the search.

I'm using an external hard drive for mac backup and also to store photo files. I copied some photo files to the drive about two weeks ago and their icon appears, but when I want to open them, I get an error message: "The alias “...” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." There is also a small arrow on the icon. My other files can be opened okay.
What's also strange is that I found the icon of the external drive in the folder with the picture files, even though I did not drag it there (the main icon is till on my computer's desktop, where it should be.) That icon also has a small arrow on it. When I click on it, it opens and I can see my folders, but the photo folders with the arrow on it will still not open.
I tried ejecting the drive and reconnecting it, but it didn't work. Is there anything I can do to recover the missing photo files, or are they most likely gone? I have deleted these pictures from my computer hard drive. What should I do about the mysterious second external drive icon? Delete it or keep it? Can I somehow use it to restore the photo files?

I am thinking of removing the 120gb std hdd in the mini and replacing this with a SSD, coupled with 4GB of RAM to speed things up (will be 2.26ghz). Im guessing the capacity of this will be aroung 60-80 gb and will only be used for the OS.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm selling my old Powerbook G4. Before I let it go, I want to wipe the hard drive and reinstall OS 10.4. I also would like to run disk first aid because I suspect there may be some corruption. The problem: I still have the original system install DVDs that came with the laptop, but the DVD drive no longer works. It just spins the disks for a bit then spits them back out. I do have an external USB hard drive with plenty of free space. Is there a way I can copy the install DVDs (there's a Disc 1 and Disc 2) to the external hard drive, then boot from that drive and treat it like I'm installing from the DVDs? I also have my new MacBook Pro with a working DVD drive. Can I make my Powerbook boot from a CD in the MacBook's drive? If not, how else can I wipe my system and reinstall the OS without a working DVD drive?
