Hardware :: How To Increase Wifi Reception

Dec 19, 2005

My powerbook gets awful wifi reception. It's driving me insane. I know they sell antennas online that you can wire into the airport card. I really do not want to open up any of my hardware and do that.

Is there any other way to boost reception?

MacBook Pro :: Wifi Reception Is Terrible / Constant Wifi Dropouts?

Apr 27, 2010

My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.

PowerPC :: Wifi Reception On 8 Year Old G4 PWNS

Mar 27, 2009

So i resurrected my old DP G4/450/768/10.4 and strangely, it shows 30% more wireless networks than my Mac Pro/Dual Xeon/4gb/10.5 and both HP Laptops running Vista. The G4 has an internal Airport card(i forgot about them there days!). Of course the Airport card knows nothing of WPA encryption and have to disable security to connect. It amazes me that the reception is so much better in this legacy machine.

Mac Mini :: Use An External Wifi Antenna To Boost Reception For Core Solo Mini

Apr 15, 2012

My old Mini is in the next room to the wireless DSL modem. It gets one to three max bars, usually two, and it's just through one interior wall. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.

Hardware :: The New 13" MBP Have Better Wifi Reception Then Current 12" Powerbook?

Jun 16, 2009

I hope this is not a stupid question, but I trust many of you more then a salesperson.I currently own a 12" G4 Powerbook which I really like, but it is getting a bit long in the tooth, so I am considering buying a new 13" Macbook Pro.

My one question is this. Will the new 13" MBP have better wifi reception then my current 12" powerbook? I ask because my 12"powerbook's weakness seems to be poor wifi reception. I'm told this is no secret.

I recently have been put in a situation where better wifi reception is a must. It is the main reason I'd be upgrading. Will I notice better reception? Do I need to consider a 15" to get better wifi?

Hardware :: Improving AirPort Reception?

Dec 15, 2008

I just moved into a new apartment today. Of course, I checked to see if there were any open wireless networks before signing up for high speed internet access.

There is one open linksys available, but I am having trouble with it. I get varying signal strengths between all and no bars. They vary as I sit at the table motionless with nothing moving around me. I get high speed streaming audio for a few minutes, then no internet at all for the next 5 minutes.

OS X :: Medicore Wireless Reception In Lid Closed Mode?

2.4GHz mid-2007 Macbook Pro on Leopard. Ever since getting my new monitor and running my laptop in lid closed mode, I've been getting frequent (3-8 times per day) disconnections from my wireless network. One moment the Airport menu bar icon shows full strength, next moment it's disconnected. I never had any trouble in lid open mode. Is this a known issue when running a MBP in with the lid closed?

Software :: PCR M30 And Garageband - Bulk Reception And Midi I / F Off

Feb 8, 2009

I'm a complete novice to Garageband, but have been having fun with it so far. One thing I would really like to be able to do, but can't figure out (and not for lack of hours spent trying) is assign tracks in GB to the sliders and twist knobs on my Edirol PCR-M30. I've read the manual for the PCR-M30, but for a casual user like me, I just don't understand what it means by "bulk reception" and "midi i/f off" and the like. Can anyone help me to understand in simple terms how I can assign volume control to the sliders and panning to the twist knobs on a per track basis in GB for my PCR-M30?

PowerPC :: Boost Of Speed / Reception From Wireless Card?

Aug 17, 2008

I got myself a PowerBook G4, trying to weigh my options as far as upgrades go. The airport inside this laptop gives me horrible reception, always has, always will. Would a wireless card give me a significant boost of speed/reception? If you have experience with it, please add your input as I'm trying to justify this purchase if it will have benefits. Example, I'm in my bedroom, 2 floors down is the wireless router (not that far away), and sometimes reception drops to 0...I'd like to have a solid connection.

PowerPC :: Using Airport Reception Between MacBook Versus Powerbook?

Jun 22, 2009

I am currently at the beach and I have my Powerbook G4 12'' and my father's MacBook operating. Both have OSX 10.4.11 running. My father's MacBook, which is approximately 3 years old versus my older Powerbook, is picking up several internet connections from the surrounding houses in the area but for whatever reason, my older Powerbook only picks up about 1/3 the amount of internet connections. Does anyone know why this is the case? Do the newer MacBook's have improved components in terms of their airports that allow them to pick up more signals? Is there a setting I can change on my older Powerbook that could improve my signal reception.

MacBook Pro :: Poor Wireless Reception - Connection Dropping

Jan 1, 2010

Two days ago I got a 'new' refurbished 13" MBP from Apple to replace my aging 2006 MB. It's ok, but not quite as nice as I expected. One major thing I've noticed is that the wireless reception is much worse than my old MacBook. They're both connected to a Netgear WGR614 v9, but the MB is getting about 2/4 bars, while the MBP is constantly dropping the connection. In fact, right now I have the MB booted in Win7 and it's running Connectify, in order to share the connection with the MBP. I'm downloading the latest software updates right now, and then I'll see if any firmware is available, but I doubt that will make much of a difference. Is this because the new MBP is made from aluminum?

Hardware :: Is There An Antenna To Extend Range Of Airport Reception?

We use our MacBook Pro in our RV, usually in campgrounds with wifi. Often we're not near the transmitter, and the signal is unusable.

MacBook :: Wireless Reception Better With MacBook Open Rather Than Closed?

May 22, 2009

I don't know if anybody else is seeing this with their laptop, but when I use my Apple LED display and close my laptop to use only the display, my wireless reception drops 2-3 bars. However, within seconds of opening my laptop back on (regardless of detecting the laptop's display or not) my wireless reception goes back to full. Does removing that extra layer from any kind of wireless receiver really make that much of a difference?

MacBook :: Will Old Titanium Running 10.3 Be Able To Connect To Wifi With A Usb Wifi Antenna?

I have a pretty old Titanium Mac Book that runs OS 10.3.9.  It's a moderately slow machine, but still works-  and although I realize that it won't be able to stream video or anything, I figure it would work for email, and basic web browsing-  But I'm wondering if it's going to be compatible with any new products such as a USB wifi antenna - because the room where I want to use it won't alow for an ethernet connection-   Also, will the old 10.3.9 OS allow me to connect wifi to the newer airport extreme base stations?

MacBook :: Won't Work With Wifi Network / Drops Wifi

Jan 10, 2011

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.

Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.

So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.

Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

AIRPORT says the following in System Profiler.

Software Versions:
Menu Extra:6.2.1 (621.1)
configd plug-in:6.2.3 (623.2)
System Profiler:6.0 (600.9)
Network Preference:6.2.1 (621.1)
AirPort Utility:5.5.2 (552.11)

Translated from Swedish:"If you install DIMM-modules of 512 MB they must have 256 Mb-units". What does that mean exactly and how do I check that they in fact have "256 Mb-units"?
