Hardware :: EyeTV 250 Vs EyeTV Hybrid - Digitize VHS Tapes

Jan 1, 2010

I was thinking about picking up an EyeTV 250 (not plus) or EyeTV Hybrid on eBay. I wanted to use it not for TV on my computer, but to digitize VHS tapes. Would the EyeTV Hybrid be capable of this or would the EyeTV 250 be higher quality?

Hardware :: Eye Tv Hybrid Vs Eyetv 250 Plus - Hybrid Seemed To Lag Movement On Screen?

Dec 4, 2009

Just bought an eyetv hybrid. I ran it through my dual G5 and sent it back to my tv and wasn't impressed with the video quality. It ran a little better on my new mac mini (I love the mini!!!) but was wondering what kind of performance I would get from the 250 when viewing HD Channels. Can I expect better performance from the 250 on HD channels or are the two models comparable? I noticed that the Hybrid seemed to lag somewhat when there was movement onscreen. Also, will I be able to get Comcast HD channels? I plan on upgrading to HD service soon.[My apologies if this has been addressed: I've searched through some of the threads and I didn't see anything make mention of the HD capability that is now available to 250.]

Basically what I'm asking is is the computer encoding superior to the hardware encoding in some way?

Hardware :: The New EyeTV Hybrid In Windows Xp?

Oct 12, 2008

So I bought the newest EyeTV Hybrid under the assumption it would (with little tweaking) operate in windows as well.

Which it doesn't.

The device is recogniezd as EyeTV Hybrid in windows, VID=0FD9 PID=0018.

I'm trying to install the Hauppauge software (4.6b) to use it.

So, I edited on of the .inf's so that my gf's comp now thinks the device is a HVR-980. And am installing as I write this. The hardware search/driver install bounced befor I edited the infs, but now says it got the 980 installed, requiring reboot... -> So, off to reboot.

I will report back to you.

Hardware :: Comcast Ruined Elgato EyeTV Hybrid?

Jul 21, 2010

So I've owned Elgato's EyeTV Hybrid product for about 2 years (previously had the 250 model) and really enjoy recording sports games with it (plenty of Patriots, Celtics and Red Sox memories on my Mac now!).

But, all of a sudden, almost no channels are available. After a lengthy back and forth with Elgato's awful online email support, it turns out Comcast now requires a digital cable box for almost every basic cable channel except PBS and CSPAN. Who wants to record CSPAN? That essentially makes the EyeTV Hybrid a useless product for two reasons:1.) It forces you to get another digital cable box from Comcast for about $8/month2.) Prevents you from using the software or the EyeTV iPhone App to watch live TV, control recordings via guide, etc.

The only solution is to buy their new EyeTV HD product for $200 but you'll still need to pay Comcast for a dedicated box. I've asked Elgato's customer service repeatedly for a discount on the new product, since it's really my only option and because the product I purchased less than two years ago has been stripped to nothing. It's been 20 days and no response from them. I guess I'll just buy a Slingbox instead...recording ability or not.

Hardware :: How To Make Elgato Eyetv Hybrid Work On Windows XP/Vista/7 - 32bit Or 64bit

Jan 26, 2009

I know a lot of us have the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid and would love to use it on our Macs in conjunction with Bootcamp & Windows. Well I finally figured out how to do it! All I had to do is slightly modify some Windows drivers.

The hardware being used is very similar to the Hauppauge USB Sticks.

Elgato made 2 versions of the hybrid; the older version without QAM and the newer version with QAM. (It has been brought to my attention they also have a new version out with radio capabilities).

I have only been able to test this on the hybrid WITH QAM.

I was able to slightly modify the Hauppauge drivers which allowed the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid to work under windows using both the Windows Media Center and the standalone player by Hauppauge.

So here is what you need to do:

Go to Device Manager

Vista users: Right click on Computer > Click Properties > Click Device Manager

Now you should see some devices under "Other devices" with a yellow question mark next to them. Both should be called "EyeTV Hybrid" There are two because the USB stick has both a digital and analog tuner.

Right click on either device > Click Properties > Click Details tab > Where it says Property, scroll down to Hardware IDs

If the bold numbers match, these drivers will work for you. (If they don't match please provide me with your numbers so I can try and make drivers that will work for you.)
USBVID_0FD9&PID_0008&REV_0005&MI_03

Now we can close the EyeTV Hybrid Properties windows which brings us back to Device Manager.

Download both the modified drivers (an attachment below) and the manufacturer software here:

[URL]

Unzip and open the manufacturer software, navigate to the Drivers folder, and replace: HCWemBda.inf and HCWemBda64.inf with the modified drives you downloaded from me. (You also have to unzip and open the folder you downloaded from me).

Now go back to your Device Manager window, Right click on one of the EyeTV Hybrid devices with the yellow question mark next to it and click Update Driver Software...

Click Browse my computer for driver software > Click browse and navigate to the drivers folder from the manufacturer's software > Click Ok.

Do the same for the other device in Device Manager.

Now go to the manufacturer's software you downloaded earlier and double click Setup.

Finish the install and you should be Done

Hardware :: How To Capture HD Video On EyeTV 250 Plus

Apr 18, 2008

I just bought an EyeTV 250 Plus, and I was wondering if there is any way I can capture HD 720p and HD 1080i video on my MacBook?

I ask because when you record a file and export it, it gives you the option to export the recording in HDV 720p or HDV 1080i .. doesn't this mean that you should be able to record in HD?

This unit doesn't come with Component outlets, it only lets you plug on the Red, White, and Yellow Composite cables and an S-Video cable, but you need either an HDMI port or an Component to capture 720p or 1080i, correct?

Am I missing something here or can you not record in HD? If not, then what's the point of those HD export settings?

I have to say that on old MBA everything works fine, same OSX version, same USB extension cable, etc.). Jul 19, 2010

Here are the problems being exhibited:1/ When EyeTV is running, it will sporadically, and unpredictably, crash without explanation.2/ Many times, the iMac will not even boot - it gets so far @ the grey screen, and then the "Please restart your computer" screen pops up:3/ Also, when using either VLC or EyeTV, sometimes there are patterns of green *horizontal* lines, spanning the area of the video playback window (NOT the entire iMac screen) - this happens a LOT.I have booted in safe mode, verified the volume in Disk Utility, repaired permissions, and it still exhibits these same issues. Also, EyeTV will freeze when displaying video, quite often.

Software :: EyeTV Not Opening Since Computer Crashed?

May 13, 2008

I asked a previous question (don't know whether you can see the last ticket as it is now closed) when my imac suddenly crashed and wouldn't boot. The problem seemed to be resolved by typing /sbin/fsck/ -fy after pressing Apple + S after powering up. All seemed to be working fine except EyeTV wouldn't load/

I assumed it was the usb stick that caused it as the light wouldn't even appear and have purchased a new version. Receiving it i still seem to be having the same problem. Most times it crashes with only the icon bouncing in the dock then disappearing. Although i did manage to load it once and get through the eyetv setup stages with a live picture in the background although it then crashed after i closed the setup window and now can't get anywhere again

The report window comes up and gives this information, don't know if it means anything to you:

Process: EyeTV [195]
Path: /Applications/EyeTV.app/Contents/MacOS/EyeTV
Identifier: com.elgato.eyetv

Build Info: EyeTV-3545~3545
Code Type: PPC (Native)
Parent Process: launchd [72]

Date/Time: 2008-05-09 03:08:38.027 +0100
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010)
Report Version: 6

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000020000
Crashed Thread: 0

and then a long line of coding

Another point is that i can't seem to reset permissions in disk utility. It starts and comes up saying estimated time less than a minute but then freezes

Just wondered what i should do as it seems to be a fault with the imac now and i really haven't got a clue how to get it going (if it's even possible).

Applications :: EyeTV - Lost Signal Under Snow Leopard?

Sep 7, 2009

I knows this sounds like an irrational connection, but after upgrading to Snow Leopard, eyeTV has a MUCH worse channel reception here. Nothing else in the setting changed and it's for many days now so that a temporary reception change because of weather etc. can't be the problem. It's that bad that most of the channels don't even get enough signal anymore to create a picture. (But, as described, it's not a total failout which would be much easier to hunt down, I guess.) I also tried the new eyeTV beta (and de- and reinstalled the program again), but nothing changed. It seems as if I am the only person in the whole wide world who experiences this DRAMATIC change in signal reception just because of Snow Leopard or is anybody else out there?

Applications :: EyeTV - Some Channels Say No Signal, But Other Devices Work Fine

I have Elgato EyeTV Digital TV Recorder Version 2.5.3 (3313) running under OSX version 10.4.11 and using a Miglia TVMini (TVM01) USB 2.0 DVB-T Digital Video Recorder device.

Recently, (after no software changes except maybe a osx/safari/itunes update, but I can't imagine why this would cause a problem), certain channels now display "No Signal", and when I check the preferences Signal info, these channels have a strength and quality of 0%. This seemed to happen all of a sudden, and I now cannot get the channels working again (despite trying a signal booster, re-scanning all channels) while other receivers (i.e. a TV) seem to work fine from the same input.

A full listing of the channel titles (and numbers) which are displayed as having 0% strength and quality are: Yesterday (12), 4music (18), Film4 (15), Viva (21), Ideal World (22), ITV4 (24), Dave ja vu (35), Big Deal (32), Virgin+1 (35), Create & Craft (36), Rocks & Co (40), Lottery Xtra (45) Russia Today (85), smileTV2 (94), Babestation (96), Babestation2 (99).

Hardware :: Eyetv 250 Versus TVMax Versus Blackmagic Video Recorder?

Apr 30, 2008

I'm trying to decide which product to buy and I was hoping for some advice.

First and foremost I want a device so that I may transfer my VHS tapes to DVD.

Live TV recording is secondary but for the price, I'd like to find the device that suits me best so I can continue to use it after i've transferred all my VHS.

Here are my concerns:

1) I'm going to be moving from the US to Ireland in a couple of months (not sure for how long, could be years+) Obviously there's the whole NTSC vs. PAL, ATSC vs. DVB.

I know with EyeTV 250 it's either or, any ideas if buying some sort of converter is an option (prices, quality)? If I bought just a PAL one, would I still be able to convert VHS or would it be completely unusable in the US?

2) I'd like some sort of HD/Digital abilities. From what I can tell TVMax is analog only and Blackmagic may also be but I can't find more specs on that.

Does this mean they'll be useless once the US undergoes the conversion?

So as of now I'm leaning towards EyeTV 250 but the question are there any forseeable problems with using a PAL to NTSC converter or using a PAL EyeTV in the US just to convert VHS.

OS X :: EyeTV And Internet Not Working / Updated Leopard To Snow Leopard

Mar 23, 2010

Firstly I am sorry if this has been posted before, but I did have a look at the Snow Leopard FAQ & a browse through the current topics. And secondly, I am also sorry if I am not using appropriate computer language to describe certain things. I have a 17 inch Macbook Pro I bought in the middle of last year. Before Snow Leopard. So when Snow Leopard came along I went for the upgrade without looking around at compatibility issues with certain software.

So after the upgrade, my EyeTV didn't work, and neither did my internet (I use the ones with the USB stick). So I couldn't even go online to get my EyeTV update. So in my (brief) panick I re-installed Leopard, which wasn't a great idea I guess, because all of a sudden my HD space went down to 50GB from my 500GB of storage. Now I know I didn't have the full 500GB since I did have some photos, music & videos on board. But surely 50GB remaining is quite ridiculous. I think it probably performed a Time Machine backup for me.

Anyway... that was awhile ago. And I was happy to carry on with what I had. But now I think I would like to try what Snow Leopard has to offer. But with only 18GB of space remaining, I think the best option might be to reformat and start over. What do you guys think? My other option is to try to delete as much as I can spare to make room for Snow Leopard. Sorry if this question is a silly one, but I have done a lot of things with my iPhone & with this Mac without thinking & asking first & I have always regretted it. Thanks for any help or suggestions you all can offer.

Software :: Converting Eyetv Files To Divx Avi Using Divx Pro?

Oct 25, 2008

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this query - moderately new user - well had my imac for 2 years but havent spent a lot of time getting up to speed with it - needs basis only.

query - i have eyetv elgato about 2 years old running vers 2.5.3 of the related software - I have a hard disc full of recorded material and want to convert it to divx - bought Divx Pro - mind you only $30 Australian- in the understanding that it would easily and quickly!! (toast takes about 3 days!) convert .eyetv files to divx avi - that function is available on the pull down menu in eyetv and it did it once when i used a trial version of Divx Pro.

Now it refuses to do it saying that the version i have is not supported and to go back to divx - i have the latest version of divx though.

I do notice that eyetv are selling their own divx converter for $100 and suspect this may be the issue

Does anyone else have this problem or know a workaround to it - do i have to go back to older versions??

Divx have told me that they dont have any agreements with or information about eyetv and to go and ask eyetv. Eyetv have not so far responded to my requests for an answer.

Applications :: How Do You Digitize Your CD Collection?

Nov 1, 2010

I've been researching the issue of how to digitize my CD collection (about 150 -200 CDs) for a few weeks now. Here are my requirements:

- I want to preserve the original CD quality music (master copy). This will most likely be stored on an external disk and/or a bunch of high-capacity SD cards.

- I want to be able to convert to "itunes store quality" for playing on an iPod.

The sticky part of course is the first requirement. I want it to be able to play easily on any player. In other words, even though I'm will Apple today, I might not be tomorrow.

So the choices for the lossless copy are:

- WAV: The problem with wav is they don't support tagging. Ordinarily I would not have thought this to be a big deal, but everyone seems to think it is. As I understand it, when ripping to something like Apple Lossless, iTunes will automatically tag the music for me which it can't do if I decide to rip to wav. The thing I like about wav is there aren't versions of it so there will likely be players that will handle it 10, 20 or whatever years down the line.

- Apple lossless: No support in other players. Probably not the option that I want to go with for the master copy. The reason I'm hesitant to use Apple Lossless for the master is because I don't want to end up with some unsupported version sitting on my offline disks 10 years from now. For instance, I have old Word files that cannot be read by Pages...I want to avoid something like that happening with my music.

- FLAC: No support in iTunes.

So here's what I'm thinking of doing. I will rip using iTunes to Apple Lossless, and then convert to wav using Max and also convert to "iTunes store quality". The undesirable part is that I end up with an Apple Lossless file that I don't care for.

A question that I have is: If I were to rip to wav and then convert to "iTunes store quality" audio, then would iTunes/Max still automatically do tagging for me for those files?

I'm sure many of you folks have had to deal with similar requirements so I'd be grateful if you can share your stories of how you addressed them.
