Hardware :: Comcast Ruined Elgato EyeTV Hybrid?
Jul 21, 2010
So I've owned Elgato's EyeTV Hybrid product for about 2 years (previously had the 250 model) and really enjoy recording sports games with it (plenty of Patriots, Celtics and Red Sox memories on my Mac now!).
But, all of a sudden, almost no channels are available. After a lengthy back and forth with Elgato's awful online email support, it turns out Comcast now requires a digital cable box for almost every basic cable channel except PBS and CSPAN. Who wants to record CSPAN? That essentially makes the EyeTV Hybrid a useless product for two reasons:1.) It forces you to get another digital cable box from Comcast for about $8/month2.) Prevents you from using the software or the EyeTV iPhone App to watch live TV, control recordings via guide, etc.
The only solution is to buy their new EyeTV HD product for $200 but you'll still need to pay Comcast for a dedicated box. I've asked Elgato's customer service repeatedly for a discount on the new product, since it's really my only option and because the product I purchased less than two years ago has been stripped to nothing. It's been 20 days and no response from them. I guess I'll just buy a Slingbox instead...recording ability or not.

I know a lot of us have the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid and would love to use it on our Macs in conjunction with Bootcamp & Windows. Well I finally figured out how to do it! All I had to do is slightly modify some Windows drivers.
The hardware being used is very similar to the Hauppauge USB Sticks.
Elgato made 2 versions of the hybrid; the older version without QAM and the newer version with QAM. (It has been brought to my attention they also have a new version out with radio capabilities).
I have only been able to test this on the hybrid WITH QAM.
I was able to slightly modify the Hauppauge drivers which allowed the Elgato Eyetv Hybrid to work under windows using both the Windows Media Center and the standalone player by Hauppauge.
So here is what you need to do:
Go to Device Manager
Vista users: Right click on Computer > Click Properties > Click Device Manager
Now you should see some devices under "Other devices" with a yellow question mark next to them. Both should be called "EyeTV Hybrid" There are two because the USB stick has both a digital and analog tuner.
Right click on either device > Click Properties > Click Details tab > Where it says Property, scroll down to Hardware IDs
If the bold numbers match, these drivers will work for you. (If they don't match please provide me with your numbers so I can try and make drivers that will work for you.)
USBVID_0FD9&PID_0008&REV_0005&MI_03
Now we can close the EyeTV Hybrid Properties windows which brings us back to Device Manager.
Download both the modified drivers (an attachment below) and the manufacturer software here:
[URL]
Unzip and open the manufacturer software, navigate to the Drivers folder, and replace: HCWemBda.inf and HCWemBda64.inf with the modified drives you downloaded from me. (You also have to unzip and open the folder you downloaded from me).
Now go back to your Device Manager window, Right click on one of the EyeTV Hybrid devices with the yellow question mark next to it and click Update Driver Software...
Click Browse my computer for driver software > Click browse and navigate to the drivers folder from the manufacturer's software > Click Ok.
Do the same for the other device in Device Manager.
Now go to the manufacturer's software you downloaded earlier and double click Setup.
Finish the install and you should be Done

Which one is better...? I have latest generation Macbook Pro and Mac Mini so do I really need the hardware encoding boost? Other than that, is there any advantage to the 250 Plus? It seems that the Hybrid does everything other than the hardware encoding and the Hybrid even has a FM Radio Tuner (not that I need it...)

I was thinking about picking up an EyeTV 250 (not plus) or EyeTV Hybrid on eBay. I wanted to use it not for TV on my computer, but to digitize VHS tapes. Would the EyeTV Hybrid be capable of this or would the EyeTV 250 be higher quality?

Just bought an eyetv hybrid. I ran it through my dual G5 and sent it back to my tv and wasn't impressed with the video quality. It ran a little better on my new mac mini (I love the mini!!!) but was wondering what kind of performance I would get from the 250 when viewing HD Channels. Can I expect better performance from the 250 on HD channels or are the two models comparable? I noticed that the Hybrid seemed to lag somewhat when there was movement onscreen. Also, will I be able to get Comcast HD channels? I plan on upgrading to HD service soon.[My apologies if this has been addressed: I've searched through some of the threads and I didn't see anything make mention of the HD capability that is now available to 250.]

I'm looking to buy one of these, but I can't seem to figure out what the actual differences are?Is the 250+ basically just a 'Hybrid', but with more features?
And if so, what features?

Does anyone know if the picture quality would be higher on the EyeTV Hybrid vs. the Hardware Encoding limitations of the EyeTV 250? Like... I have a really fast computer, can I encode at top notch quality on the Hybrid, that way I get the maximum picture clarity? Basically what I'm asking is is the computer encoding superior to the hardware encoding in some way?

So I bought the newest EyeTV Hybrid under the assumption it would (with little tweaking) operate in windows as well.
Which it doesn't.
The device is recogniezd as EyeTV Hybrid in windows, VID=0FD9 PID=0018.
I'm trying to install the Hauppauge software (4.6b) to use it.
So, I edited on of the .inf's so that my gf's comp now thinks the device is a HVR-980. And am installing as I write this. The hardware search/driver install bounced befor I edited the infs, but now says it got the 980 installed, requiring reboot... -> So, off to reboot.
I will report back to you.

I am excited waiting for my new Canon 7D and plan to be shooting a lot of 720P 60FPS videos. I can see the need to be converting them in different formats to publish on Youtube and Vimeo.
I got a Mac Pro 1,1 9GB Mem, Snow Leopard with ATI 4890 and was wondering if the ATI 4890 would be doing the re-encoding job better then the ElGato Turbo.264 HD - H.264 Encoder.

I was trying to install Windows 7 onto my machine and now it appears that the hard disk is ruined. Instead of the Apple logo during startup there is a question mark that flashes. I was told by the Apple people that it was a hard disk problem and that it now needs replacing.
The DVD drive in the iMac has not been working for a while now. I'm currently contemplating how to go about fixing this. I do have an external blu ray player from which I should be able to boot but I don't know how. Can someone please tell me how I can fix this problem? I currently have a non functional iMac.
If I open up the Imac and replace the HDD will the problem fix itself? Will the iMac want to re-install OS X?

I'm interested in hooking my AT&T uVerse to my mac so that I can watch tv on my Mac and occasionally archive some things onto my Mac. I know that the Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus will do this, but it's more than I need since the uVerse box is already a DVR.

So my brother spilled a cup of milk on his Macbook. Its the white older gen from 06' ish. Now I took it apart, how can I tell if the macbooks actually water damaged. Where are the markers that change color? Also, from what I can gather I think the keyboard has ruined but not the motherboard. The charger lights up green when there is no battery, but doesn't if the battery is attached. I tried the original battery and one from my working macbook, does the same thing on both batteries. So it's not that. Im thinking it will start up if i replace the keyboard because it probably got ruined so the power button won't send a signal to the motherboard, therefore wont turn on.
I don't want to take apart my working macbook and risk ruining it with static discharge or something, unless theres a good possibility that the keyboard is the problem on the broken one. I see milk residue on the battery prong and around the front left corner. So im assuming the battery ribbon on the macbook and the keyboard itself got ruined. I do not see anything wrong or milk residue on the motherboard or its surrounding components. Also worst comes to worst and it is ruined. What is the best thing to do with it? eBay?

I just need to know something about the harddrive formats. I understand that if you want to use a format that works on both windows and mac then you cant have files bigger than 4gb. I have all my music, videos, pictures and such from my old computer stored on an external harddrive and I have files bigger than 4gb so I guess the mac mini wont be able to read this harddrive. Is there anything I can do? I wanna get all my files from my current computer transfered to the mac mini. Secondly, whats the best TV software & hardware for the Mac Mini? Ive looked at Elgatos EyeTV Hybrid and EyeTV Plus 250 or whatever. I have a satellite dish, and 90% of the channels are analogue, so I need the best for analogue (and digital as well) TV.

Okay, so I installed Snow Leopard on my parent's Mac mini and it has a Hanns.g display connected to it. In 10.5 Leopard, the colors looked normal (still not as good as an Apple monitor, but colors were close enough). Anyway, like I said, I upgraded to Snow Leopard and now the monitor's color is all out of whack. I tried re-calibrating it and everything. The weird thing is, I got the Finder to look okay, but all of the blue icons in the Dock (iTunes, iChat, Safari, QuickTime etc) look PURPLE! Also, the menu bar selections are the same purple color instead of that light blue. The other weird thing is... looking at the Finder icon in the Dock looks half purple and half light blue, but when I hit cmd-tab, it looks half blue and half light blue. The cmd-tab icon of the Finder looks like I'd expect it to look, but all the colors are completely destroyed in the Dock. Another thing is... scroll bars seem to look like normal blue too. One more thing... when I tried doing the manual calibration, it shows you how bright to make the monitor with the little graphic. The graphic looked so washed out that I couldn't make the monitor dark enough (on the darkest setting) to get even close to the picture that the calibration tool wants me to see. Is Snow Leopard only compatible with Apple monitors? I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro (Apple Cinema Display) and all the colors are consistent. The colors look the same regardless of 2.2 gamma or 1.8 gamma, so please don't bring that up. I want BLUE icons... not purple!

Prior to Snow Leopard, you could use swipe up to see the desktop and then swipe down to come back to your previous window. Now you must swipe up again to go back to your original window. The up/down movement is ruined in Snow Leopard...

I dropped a glass of milk on my MacBook Pro yesterday, I was so sad. The milk landed all around, keyboard, trackpad, screen. I dried it all with a towel and it works perfectly. But, the screen is completely ruined. It is smudgy and sticky, and blurry with milk. I think using a towel is the worst thing I could have done. What can I use to cleanse my screen of this uncomfortable smudge?

My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again. Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

I just bought an EyeTV 250 Plus, and I was wondering if there is any way I can capture HD 720p and HD 1080i video on my MacBook?
I ask because when you record a file and export it, it gives you the option to export the recording in HDV 720p or HDV 1080i .. doesn't this mean that you should be able to record in HD?
This unit doesn't come with Component outlets, it only lets you plug on the Red, White, and Yellow Composite cables and an S-Video cable, but you need either an HDMI port or an Component to capture 720p or 1080i, correct?
Am I missing something here or can you not record in HD? If not, then what's the point of those HD export settings?

I have had an EyeTV 250 for a few years now and have upgraded to digital TV for obvious purposes. I got a set top box because it was much cheaper than a new EyeTV. However, there is no option to make the set top box an option? Any type of plugin. I am using version 2 of Eyetv software. Do I have to update to version 3?

I just change a old MBA 1.6 GHz (OSX 10.6.1) for MBA 2.13 GHz (also OSX 10.6.1) and haven problem with EyeTV (3.2.1 version) via Pinacle Hibrid Stick 330e. Soft start excellent - I can see video for few minutes (3,4-5) and than video stops - audio is going (but only for next 2-3 minutes). To see something I have to restart soft or unplug an plug stick to USB port (I do not use HUB, I only use extension of USB cable - MBA have not so much space to plug directly Pinacle Stick). I have to say that on old MBA everything works fine, same OSX version, same USB extension cable, etc.). I try to see if soft and stick works on another computer - I use MacBook Black version (last black configuration) and results: no problems. Video do not stops! I try to find solution on macs forums but I did not find anybody who have this problem.

My friend has the 24" white, 2.16Ghz iMac - spec http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...nch-specs.htmlHe is currently running a fully updated install of Tiger, and running EyeTV v2.5.3 and VLC (unknown version). Here are the problems being exhibited:1/ When EyeTV is running, it will sporadically, and unpredictably, crash without explanation.2/ Many times, the iMac will not even boot - it gets so far @ the grey screen, and then the "Please restart your computer" screen pops up:3/ Also, when using either VLC or EyeTV, sometimes there are patterns of green *horizontal* lines, spanning the area of the video playback window (NOT the entire iMac screen) - this happens a LOT.I have booted in safe mode, verified the volume in Disk Utility, repaired permissions, and it still exhibits these same issues. Also, EyeTV will freeze when displaying video, quite often.

first of all I would like to say that I am new to macrumors but not new to macs. I'm currently using a 15" MacBook Pro i7 with HR-AG. I have owned a 15" uMBP 2.8ghz (mid-2009), a 13" uMB 2.0ghz (late-2008) and a 13" Blackbook (late 2006).
i know it's alot of macs in a small timeframe but i love macs and always want to upgrade...which brings me to my next question..
Has anyone tried the Seagate Hybrid XT SSD, 7200RPM?
I want the performance of an ssd but not the high price tag. If someone is running this drive, I would like to hear about your experience with it.
I don't use my computer for editing, just browsing, notes and e-mail. However i am very curious about boot times. I love how fast an ssd boots up, and since i don't run any data intensive apps at all, i think a hybrid drive may be all that I need.
