Hardware :: Diamond BVU195 Versus The EVGA Plus UV16 Dual Monitor

Oct 30, 2009

Ok, here we go about dual monitors. First and foremost I know that the Matrox is available but I haven't found a source that stated for MBP unibody 17" will it work properly. Even if it does, the price for it is expensive!

Mac Pro :: 6GB Versus 8GB Triple Versus Dual Channels/PS4 Tests

Jun 30, 2009

I ran some tests on my 2009 Quad Nehalem to try and determine what was up with the triple Vs dual memory "brouhaha".

I posted the results as a new thread because I think it will be useful information for a lot of quad owners, but it was originally going to be a reply to this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=735845

Here we go. Tesselator suggested 3 tests that could show the differences in speed between triple and dual channel bandwidth.

Quote:

As one idea I would maybe try creating a few very large images (16-bit, blank white, blank black, gradient fill) and then duplicating and deleting that layer repeatedly a few hundred times.

So I did them, 10 times each. I could have gone on, but the results were very very stable after the first 2 attempts.

Set-up: a 40Mpx, 16bit image (8000*5000). First test it was simply filled white; second test: black; and third test a black to white gradient. I added a fourth test, using a real (photo) 12Mpx RAW image from my Nikon D300.

I created (took a while!) an action with 350 repetitions of "duplicate layer" and "delete layer", followed by a red fill to let me know the action was done. The same action was used in all four tests.

The computer was restarted before each of the four tests, which may explain the irregularities on the first 1-2 attempts. Nothing else but PS4 was launched.

The results are interesting:

We can clearly see that the simple white and black fills show a speed difference of around 10%.

We can also clearly see that this difference disappears when a more complex image is used. The use of more complex images represents a much more realistical use of PS.

To make things even more realistic, I also tested RetouchActions's speed test on my own 12Mpx image. I use nearly all of the operations of that action on a daily basis, so it's a lot more representative of the work I do on PS.

Here are the results:

The results are clear: 11% increase in performance using 8GB of ram (Vs 6GB) when working on a 12Mpx image.

Added info: number of page-outs after running the 10 test series (after about 45 minutes of intense PS work):
-17K when using 6GB (1.7K page-out avg).
-10K when using 8GB (1K page-out avg).

For me the results are definitive: unless I plan on working only with full black or full white images (not even black and white!), having 8GB is better, even when working on smallish 12Mpx files. I imagine the differences would have been even greater using bigger file sizes of actual complex images.

What would now be interesting: someone with a 2009MP Octo doing the same tests at 12GB and 16GB.

PowerPC :: Powermac G5 Dual-core 2.3 Versus Mac Pro 2.66 V. MBP 2.16

Dec 31, 2006

i'm sure someone has experience here, but how does powermac G5 dual core 2.3 compare to MBP CD 2.16... and how does Mac Pro 2.66 compare to them?

i'm especially interested in processing photographs... not necessarily in photoshop as the CS2 comparison is kinda biased, and CS3, well, if you have those data, it's very welcomed.

i'm sure MacPro 2.66 will out perform the former two by far, but by how far? and will PMG5DC out perform MBP CD 2.16 or the other way?

PowerPC :: Power Mac Dual G5 Versus Mac Mini Core 2 Duo

Feb 15, 2008

I am looking to get another mac to do some basic video editing and encoding. All the editing is going to be done in the mpeg4 format and once the video has been edited I am going to encode the video into H.264. My question is which will be better A Power Mac Dual 1.8Ghz G5 or a Mac Mini Core 2 Duo?

I am looking for stable set up that can handle encoding video for a few hours at a time. I am leaning towards the Power Mac Dual G5 because of how much more cooling it has however that said a Mac Mini with a Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 Ghz would also probabley work well.

Hardware :: AEBS Dual Band Versus 1 Signal?

Oct 26, 2009

After the announcement of the Simultaneous Dual-Band II, I've taken an interest in getting the most out of my version. However, I've been noticing signal issues especially when using the 5 ghz network. I have it set to "wide channels", multicast rate of "High", deselected "closed network" and "interference robustness", and the transmit power at 100%.

I've adjusted the position of the router to avoid potential sources of interference, and when I go to select a network with the airport icon at on the task bar, my 5.0 ghz network is never at full strength. In fact, it rarely shows more than 2 bars. As I type this post, I am literally six feet from the AEBS and I have only 3 bars showing.

When I view the statistics within the Advanced Tab in the Airport Utility I am only showing a rate of 65 mbps on the b/g/n (2.4ghz) network and 270 mbps over the 5.0 ghz n network.

Does anyone have any idea how to get this thing going at full performance? When I'm in the adjacent room, I am rarely able to get over 200 mbps. I know a wall is in the way, but my apartment is modestly sized and it is very disappointing that the signal is this weak on this lil thing - especially given the fact that I've had it for just about a month and its been updated to address the signal issues.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Versus Airport Extreme Dual Band Base/ext

Jul 4, 2009

I just bought a new Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme. Both are the newfangled dual-band type. At the moment the AEX is the main base station, connected to my DSL modem in the Living Room. The TC extends the AEX network and is in my office.

The instructions suggest the TC should not be a network client and rather be the main base station, and to make the AEX extend the network. How much difference will there be in Time Machine performance between the two topologies?

I would really prefer having the TC in my office, so I can attach via gigabit ethernet to the TC when I'm working there with my MBP. I cannot move the DSL modem to my office since I don't have a phone line there (it's really an upstairs bedroom).

OS X :: Blue Screen With Dual Monitor / MBP Updated From 10.5.2 To 10.5.4

Jul 6, 2008

My MBP was updated from 10.5.2 to 10.5.4 (combined update) this morning and, after the installation finished, it rebooted into a blue screen. I restarted it several times and always went into blue screen.

Now, the interesting part is that this is not the "blue screen after install" problem others are experiencing. If I disconnect the external monitor during restart and wait for OS X to start everything works fine. After OS X starts properly I can even reconnect the external monitor and it works fine. In fact I am writing this post from my MBP using the external monitor right now.

Since some document on the Apple Support website was suggesting to remove the file ApplicationEnhancer.bundle in System/Library/SystemConfiguration when experiencing blue screens after the install of 10.5.4, I did look in that folder for that file but it's not there...

MacBook Pro :: How To Use A Dual Monitor Setup With An HPw22

Apr 13, 2010

Just ordered a 17" MBP and am looking to use a dual monitor setup with an HPw22. I've tried to do some research on my own but am still unsure about what adapter I should go with as this is my first time attempting to run a dual monitor setup. Below are the specs of the monitor for the interfaces with a link to the entire specs.

Interfaces 1 x VGA - 15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15) , 1 x DVI-D - 24 pin digital DVI

[URL]

I was just wondering what someone who is a bit more knowledgeable about this would recommend getting adapter wise. Can I go with either the Mini DisplayPort to VGA or Mini DisplayPort to DVI since my monitor has both? Is their an advantage to one over the other?

Mac Pro :: Dual Monitor Stopped Responding / Get It To Work?

Jun 14, 2010

I'm working with a Mac Pro (2x3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4 GB RAM) and a dual 23" monitor setup. Quite recently the second monitor stopped responding, after disconnecting everything, moving, and reconnecting. (Everything was boxed lovingly in its original packaging and moved by gentle movers.)

It isn't the monitors both work fine in the first monitor port. The computer recognizes there is a second monitor attached, allowing me to access Arrangement options under System Preferences > Displays.

The power light on the second monitor comes on, blinking in the following manner (if it were Morse Code): dot dash dot....(then it is dark for about four seconds before repeating the same blinking sequence). It appears to have some sort of meaning.

Any ideas? Is there a way to reset this?

Mac Pro :: Desktop Area Itself Squished In And Not Chopped Off On Dual Monitor

Jan 30, 2009

I have a client with a fairly basic Mac Pro setup. He has the standard ATI 2600 graphics card connected to two 26 inch Samsung LCDs. The main monitor is ok, but the secondary monitor has about one inch of the far right side that does not work. The desktop area itself is squished in, and not chopped off. So far we have replaced the monitor with another, he has about a dozen at his disposal, we have replaced the VGA cable, and we have switched ports on the video card and re arranged the screen locations in system preferences. No matter what configuration we use, the screen on the right has it's image squished and makes many things look distorted.

Just curious if anyone else has had this issue, and what they've done to resolve it. We've contacted Apple care and they originally blamed the monitor, which is why we replaced the screen completely. At some point in the next couple weeks we may have a chance to bring the system to the Apple store, but then we'd need two monitors to demonstrate the problem.

OS X :: Remembering App Positions For Single/dual Monitor Setups?

Feb 27, 2009

I'm running Mac OS 10.5.6. When I plug in the external monitor to my MacBook Pro, I setup Firefox and Entourage on my notebook monitor and Photoshop on the external. I also move the Apple menu bar to the external (since PS is my main app I like having the menu bar close by). Photoshop doesn't present a problem because I'm able to switch the layout for different workspaces (laptop alone or laptop and external), but I find that Firefox and Entourage don't remember their positions.

For example, my current setup is dual monitors as mentioned above. When I get home and power up the notebook, I'll launch all the same apps. Firefox is just barely within view hanging off the left side of the screen so I'll grab the window and drag it over so I can access the green button (not sure what this is called). Entourage displays just fine. When I get back to work the next day and plug in the external, Firefox displays on the external with the window sized to fit the notebook monitor) and I'll just drag it over. Entourage loads into the external as maximized and I'll drag it over and click the green button.

Mac Mini :: Using Dual Display Turning Off Main Monitor?

Jul 8, 2009

i have 2 LCD's hooked to the new Mini as such:

1 going mini display port to DVI adapter to DVI on 19" Monitor (standard monitor)

1 going mini DVI to DVI adapter to a DVI to HDMI on 52" LCD (Samsung TV)

i just sold me iMac and switched to the Mini not only to be able to hide the Mini which i couldn't do with the iMac but also when i watch a movie full screen on the 52 i was never able to turn off the iMac monitor and would have to cover it with a towel so that it was dark in the room except for the 52 showing the movie.

my thought was that with 2 monitors separately hooked up to the Mini that i could solve the turning off the second monitor problem as they would now both have power buttons. besides making it dark in the room i also like to have the monitor off and so that i can have Plex on the 52 always in full screen mode so my wife can just hit "Watch Plex" on the logitech remote and the TV and Stereo switch to the proper inputs and away she goes to watch whatever without having to touch the computer which when both monitors are on works perfectly.
