Hardware :: Apple LED ACD'ticking Noise - How To Fix It
Aug 6, 2009
I open it up yesterday, hooked it up to my Mac Pro and started using it. It looked great, needs a calibration of course, but overall I was impressed.
Then I started to hear a ticking or almost a creaking noise. I thought it was my desk 'settling' as I had added some extra weight to the desk, and because I was leaning on it at the time to connect the cables up etc.
I closed my eyes and leaned next to the machine and waited - it wasn't coming from the ACD speakers, it was coming from the monitor itself. I checked it out on some Apple support threads, sounds like it's an issue of heat contraction and expansion as the monitor starts up. 10 minutes into having it on it was somewhat slowed, but my goodness it was annoying.

My MacBook Pro just started to making a clicking/ticking noise. I am assuming that it has something to do with the fan because when I shut my computer down, the noise stops, but once I start my computer back it, it starts once again.

My Macbook had a wierd nosie coming from the fan. Its sounded like a ticking noise and got more frequent as the fan speed increased.
Its only a week old, but never notice it before, properly because I use it infront of the TV.
However, I have use a can of compressed air and blasted the rear ven, which seems to solved the problem. I have loaded the machine upto 4500 rpm and still no ticking noise.

not sure if anyone else is experiencing the same problems but every 20-30 seconds or so I can hear the hard drive clicking and going away, is this normal ? Its not the mentioned "loud screeches" or other kind of annoying sound, its just like a little click, this is after the 10.5.3 update, just wanting to know if some of you experience the same thing ?

I dont know how long this has been going on for but ive just noticed it. ONLY when the display sleeps, the upper left hand side of my 24" imac makes light ticking noises once every few seconds (its very light ticks, theyre hard to hear unless you put your ear to the computer). It doesnt occur when the screen is on and when everything is on, and it doesnt occur when the computer sleeps, it only happens when I put the display to sleep, which seems weird. I don't think its the HDD, I've checked the SMART status and all is fine, I've also checked the console. Why is this ticking noise occurring when the display sleeps and no time else and what is making it?

In the past two days I installed both an external HD with TM and windows vista ultimate with boot camp (everything works perfectly).
I think the noise only started like, around two days ago, but I'm not sure. I got my mac around a month ago. I think my last pc did this all the time, so at first I thought it was just normal HD writing/reading noise (I think it's the HD), but as that pc wasn't exactly new or stable and I seem to remember that my mac didn't do this at first, I thought I'd ask.
It makes the noise for a couple of seconds when I, for example, start an app, close one, boot or shut down, and at random times when I'm just doing nothing. It doesn't make it during music playback. It's completely irregular so I doubt it's a fan hitting something. It doesn't sound like that either. It's really pretty soft, and fast paced, sort of like morse code. When in vista, it makes the noise almost all the time, like 80% or something.

This isn't strictly a Mac question, but I know there's a lot of knowledgeable users here and I'm sure some have the MyBooks too. I'm in the middle of the daunting process of reformatting my two 500GB MyBook hard drives (the standard black ones) to a Mac friendly format having been a Windows user for a while... having such a large HD on the iMac makes it not too painful, thankfully. However, I've got one of my drives hooked up at the moment, copying away. It's making a consistent ticking noise as it works.
It's been a while since I asked very much of my drives (generally I just read off them file by file as it were; playing video), so is this noise normal, or is this drive on its way out do you think? As I say, it is a consistent ticking, like the ticking of a clock really rather than scary whirring-clunk noises, and there's no trouble copying files onto my iMac at the moment. I just don't want to copy stuff back over if it's going to die on me. I've got a stack of DVDs here anyway and I think it's about time I updated my DVD copies of my files...

I called Apple tech support about the screeching noise I started hearing more than once out of my Air. This was posted by someone else and there is a youtube video floating around also. I am going to take it to the Apple store to have them look at it, but I also asked the rep about operating temp range.
He said that spikes up to 90 degrees are normal, but if it startes to climb or stay in the 90-100 range, then someone should take a look at it.
Not sure how reliable this is, but thought I would mention it.

I just bought an iMac G5 off ebay and today I tried to use the Tiger install dvd because the previous owner had deleted software like textedit, etc.
Anyway, I put the disc in and clicked on Install Mac OS X, then clicking restart. once the iMac shuts down and begins to restart, as it is on the grey screen you can hear the disc being read, then as the background goes a different shade of grey and the Apple logo appears, a minute or so passes and then the iMac begins making a lot of noise. I went away for 10 minutes, came back and it was still doing the same thing.
So I'm basically looking for help because I really want to erase and reinstall everything.

My Powerbook G4 recently started doing the HD clicking and squealling noise. So I changed the HD and everything worked great for about a day. Now there is a new Humming/Ticking noise coming from the area where you plug the power supply in.
If i tap in that area, it will go away for a couple minutes and then it comes back again. Sometimes it will just go away on it's own for a few minutes too. It doesn't change if I unplug the power or anything.

So my mac was acting up, no sound from iChat and Spaces wouldn't function properly.
So i restart, the Mac pro gets o the normal point of turning off the display before the spin up sound, but instead this ticking sound occurred. This had a repetition at about ever 3 seconds.
So i quickly held the power button and shut down the Mac pro. I powered up the system and all seemed fine.
Has anyone ever ran across this before?

I bought my iMac last month (Late-2013 model) and notice some low/small "tick-ing" sound came out from the bottom section of my iMac i guess. I often hear that when there's no other sounds in my room. It happened whenever i scrolling down web page on Safari or when doing some graphical process on Photoshop, scrolling Dashboard and other graphical-related task.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

I was reading a recipe the other night and my Macbook started ticking, the screen went black, then a white screen came up with a blinking envelope with a "?" in it. This happened once before when the computer was about a year old. I took it to the Apple store and they repaired it. The problem is that store is 2 hours from me. Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it? I have hit different keys and nothing takes me out of that screen. My biggest concern is my pictures and music are on it. I plan to buy another computer (anything but Apple) if I can't come up with a fix for this. Is there any way to get my music on my Iphone onto another computer?

I just got my 2.0ghz Alu Macbook a few days ago and everything works perfectly well, the thing is that after day one the magsafe started to emit a low pitched electrical whistling noise. It tends to be there a few minutes after booting into the OS and then it turns down to almost unhearable, but I experienced it returning after a few hours of use and then disappearing again. If I move close to the escape key I can hear a crackling noise emitting from the magsafe.I'm not trying to be overly nitpicky or anything but I read somewhere that if it's doing that it would be a faulty Mag-Safe board or something.
Does any one you guys know anything about this? I have the 14 days to return it as I bought it online from the Apple Store so if it's a faulty part that might die/break/ cause problems later I might have to.

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?

My first generation unibody Macbook hasn't had any problems to this date but now it's constantly making that mechanical loading-like noise which is usually heard when the Macbook is switched on (the noise before the start up sound) or when the lid is opened to wake up the computer. Is there a fix to this?

On my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back. The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.

Has anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.
I Did the PRAM and PMU reset.I can hear it over music or the tv. It grew lower in pitch today after squealing for a half hour. I'd normally not let it go on that long, but i was
in the other room.Is my PISMO dying?

I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.
istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.
I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?
