I am giving my wife my MacBook Pro to replace her MacBook. I have been able to transfer documents, iTunes and photo's (thanks Terence Devlin) to my former MacBook Pro. I am now trying to make her the administrator. I have gone into system preferences and have not been able to proceed from there.

We had a HDD fail on one of our office Mac laptops (a power pc G4). Apple repaired it and I restored all files etc from a backup. I was the administrator during the restore. Before I could get back, the user changed that account to a standard account and changed the name. Now there is no way to change the account back, because there is no admin to authenticate the change. Anything I can do? I am not an advanced computer/Mac person.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just restored my 13" Macbook Pro from a Time Machine Backup that was created on a 15" Macbook Pro via Migration Assistant, and I have been experiencing some weird problems. The weirdest thing is that I cannot change my account from Standard to Administrator, even if I am logged into the root account. When I authenticate and click on the check box that says "Allow User to Administer This Computer", the box goes blank again and a box shows up telling me a restart is needed.

I am giving my old G4 iMac 20 (OS X 10.4.11) to a relative and have transferred my files; cleared caches, passwords, etc. and setup selected apps, iTunes songs, and iPhoto pictures for the new user. In order to conclude this iMac transfer, I have several questions:
When I change the Mac account to the new user and make her the administrator, what impact on the settings, iTunes songs, iPhoto phones, etc. whenever I delete my account/administrator?
My partner purchased an older second hand Macbook (running Leopard - from what he tells me). But he can't get round the admin password which wasn't supplied to him. there any way to change/reset this password without knowing the current password? I've got a copy of the Leopard install disk

I am sitting with a friends recently purchased iBook G4, 1 Ghz, 40 GB, 512 MB RAM. Wanted to update it for him. put an 80 GB HD in it that used to run on a mini G4 ppc chip. Also I transferred a 512 block of RAM from the same machine.
Now the machine doesn't start though. The HD starts the spinning process, but thats it. Also tried to boot from different system cd's/DVD's but to no avail.
I got a cheap 1.42ghz 512mb RAM, 14" screen G4 ibook because it had a broken hinge. I tore apart the laptop and replaced the hinge (screen frame) and put it back together. The screen wouldn't work. I opened it back up and found that the video connector was lose, so I connected it and put it back together. BAM!! Everything worked... everything except the sleep feature when the lid is closed. So I opened it back up, took the magnet from the old frame and put it on the new frame (which was missing its magnet).
When I turned it back on the screen was blank/dark. It showed all the signs of classic inverter board burnout (dark screen, can be seen with flashlight from behind, can be seen on external monitor), so I ordered an inverter board and when it arrived, I swapped it out. Still nothing. The next idea would be the backlight, but that doesn't make sense... I'm trying to figure out what might have happened to make the inverter/backlight go from working fine to not working when all I did was removed the screen back case, screw on the magnet and close it up. I have done a bunch of digging around under the hood and am wondering if anyone knows of a possible ground wire, other connection, easily broken wire, or other issue that might have happened. I'm thinking that it might be one of the power wires that goes into the inverter. It might have broken inside the shield, or maybe I was sold another bad inverter board.
So:
Assumption 1: one or both inverter boards are good.
Are there any connections other than the inverter data/power cable from the mobo and the cable from the inverter to the backlight?
Does anything else (backlight, etc) have to be grounded? Where are these groundings?
Would anything else give the same symptoms except the inverter?
How can I test the backlight? I heard that there are two lights in these machines, so if it was one of the florescent lights, only 1/2 the screen would be dark.
Assumption 2: Neither board is good and that is the problem.
How can I test the inverter board (short of an osilascope) to see if it's working?
Is this a good assumption?
I'm about stumped right now and haven't found any direct help on forums. I'm hoping someone in the Mac community has run into this or has an idea about what could be going on. I'm really hoping that I missed something like replacing a screw that is also a ground or something along those lines.
Is it possible to disconnect the optical superdrive from my iBook G4 (which is dead but the superdrive still works) and install it in my iMac G5? (Superdrive here is dead)

I have an old iBook G4 laptop and a newer iMac (OS 10.5.8). Since getting the iMac, I've neglected the laptop and so the info on it is old. I would like to synchronize these two computers and bring the laptop up to date with the iMac. Basically, I'd like to erase the laptop and then have it be a copy of the iMac. Given that I'm not very techie, how do I do this please?! And how long would it take? Thanks for any help.

I am no longer able to open Mail. I get the message: "Mail can't open because you don't have the necessary permissions to change the folder where it saves information" It then goes on to tell me where mail stores information and to go to that folder and use the Get Info window to change the privileges to Read and Write (which they already were). I authenticate, change them to Read and then back to Read and Write, click the lock and try again. Same result. I tried to take a screen shot of that window and got this message: "Your screen shot can't be saved. You don't have permission to save files in the location wherescreen shots are stored." Last night I tried to take a screen shot and got the same message. I repaired permissions in Disk Utility and there were thousands of permissions repaired.

For removing the front panel, there is screw hidden under a magnet. Somehow I can not remove that magnet. I have tried using L end keys, screw drivers, nose pliers and even a powerful magnet. This disk would not come out!
