MacBook Pro :: Is High Resolution Good For Gaming

Apr 19, 2010

I'm trying to decide whether to get the Hi-res screen or not.I was wondering if the Hi-res screen is is good if I plan on doing some casual gaming? Will the higher resolustion have any effect on the performance? Will have to turn down the settings, or will the Macbook play games just fine with higher settings and the high resolustion

MacBook Pro :: Gaming - High Resolution Vs. Standard Resolution

Who has actually played games on BOTH the 2010 high res and standard res macbook pros?Reading through that gaming benchmark thread isn't much of an indicator as most people don't post their resolution and if they have they have only played on one or the other.Im trying to get a better indicator on the performance difference with newer games. Are we talking 2-6 fps drop or 10-20 or more?

MacBook Pro :: Gaming In OSX Versus Gaming In Windows Boot?

Feb 3, 2010

when I get my new MBP (when they release them *sigh*), I intend on doing some moderate gaming on it. Things like MW2, Starcraft, Sims 3, Battlefield BC2, and some others I can't think of right now.

My question is, if a game is available for both OSX and Windows, would it be better to get it for OSX, or Windows? I was wondering if I should have like all my games in the windows partition, or have ones that I can get for OSX separate.

OS X :: How To Get Heavy Pixelation In AVI

Mar 7, 2009

Ever since the last QT update 7.6, my AVIs are so pixelated to the point where it's no use for me to edit them in FCP. They're more like thick white blocks that completely distort the image. I have both Perian and Flip4Mac up to date. I'm also using MPEG Streamclip to convert to a more friendly h.264 clip.

MacBook :: Is It Too Heavy Than Air

Jun 11, 2012

Comparing the updated MacBook air and pro 13 inch, for the high end version of both models, which laptop comes out better for performance? Add the 8GB of Memory instead of 4GB and potentially the 2.0GHz i7 upgrade to the air and does it bring it up to higher level than the pro? Primary use is for study needs (so portability is important) as well as music, videos, and games such as the GTA's, sports games and games like Civ V. Is the pro too heavy? Is the air to structurally flimsy?

MacBook Pro :: BT Dropouts Under Heavy Wifi Access?

Jul 24, 2009

Just bought a 23" dell monitor and BT keyboard (already have wireless Logitech mouse) to use with my late 2008 MBP.

Almost immediately I noticed I was getting frequent 'Connection to Keyboard lost' errors, almost 100% of the time this happens the Wifi is under heavy use moving large files to my NAS for example.

I searched Apple support and this appears to be quite common and 1 suggestion was to change my airport extreme base station to use 5GHz instead of 2.4GHz for the network. This tweak seems to have solve the issue 100%, the only downside is not all of my kit can use 5GHz .. for my work laptop I've invested in a new wifi adapter that'll cope but my Apple TV and iPhone can no longer connect to the WLAN.

Anyone else have an alternative solution for this? Or is it pure and simple down to BT interference and I should perhaps ditch the BT keyboard for a wired one?

MacBook Pro :: Heavy, Continuous System Lag, Kernel_task @ 100%+?

May 27, 2012

i was playing Diablo3 when i suddenly experienced heavy, unusual lag. I tried to reboot to see if that could even things out. No success. It took longer then usual to boot up, and when i finally reached the login-windows asking for password, it wouldent react to my typing and clicking for about 5 minutes. I could move around the mouse and the keyboard did get signal (it un-dimmed the scren when i pushed any key after letting it dim over time).

Then i tried to do a clean install of OS X Snow Leopard (formating the drive and then install). After longer then usual, reached the "choose your language" window. This window too had extreem long respond-time. I managed to start the installation but it stopped at 33minutes remaining, giving me the "Install Failed" window. this told me "Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer. The installer could not copy the necessary support fies. Click restart to restart your computer and try again.". I tried it again but it gave me the same result.

it made me believe the hardware was the problem. First i swapped the Optical Drive with an older vrsion MacBook (2008), this gave me the same install-problem (stopped at 33mins left) Then i swapped HDD with the older MacBook. It managed to boot and start "normally" with exactly the same problems as the original HDD. The first thing that gets to my mind is that something might be fried inside the computer.

I restored the original HDD with TimeMachine (needless to say i still got the problem). I'm in the middle of my exam-papers, so its reaelly annoying its happening now.I also tried installing OS X SL using an external HDD with an image of the installer disk made in disk utilities, but this only gives me "kernel error" during booting (the annoying dimmed screen with a black box in the middle telling you to restart).

Today i took a look in the Activity Monitor and it shows the CPU acting strange, spending 100-120% on kernel_task ALL the time (see added picture). Is something wrong with the CPU? Is it possible to fry only one core in a CPU leaving the others intact?I have different components available for change as long as they match each other (Macbook pro 2010 and MacBook 2008).

OS X :: Deleted Heavy Folder But Gained No Disk Space

Sep 13, 2010

I deleted a folder that nearly summed up to be 50 GB worth of files. I simply dragged the folder over the trash can. Now, the trash can shows empty (I never emptied it and it never even showed full) and the folder isn't where it used to be. I searched for the folder in Spotlight and it apparently doesn't exist. But my hard drive's memory sure thinks so. I didn't get the 50 GB back. What happened?

Hardware :: Logitech G5 Mouse Skips Under Heavy CPU Load?

Oct 17, 2008

My recently bought Logitech G5 'Gaming' mouse is no doubt a fantastic mouse. But everytime the CPU (Late 06 MBP) is doing something intensive, even if it's just one of the cores. When the mouse is moved, the pointer will skip to a random spot a few inches away on the screen. This happens over random intervals (from 2+ seconds).

Sure it's not so bad when I'm firing up VMWare and it skips around because response time isn't vital. But i'm playing games with it, and well, in WoW that means you run off cliffs and miss the potion, and becomes a major PITA.

I know the first version of the G5 (the rust coloured one) had similar problems. But apparently the new blue one (the one in question) is fine. The surface I'm using it on is a heavy sheet of cardboard (backside of a notebook).

Anyone else have this problem? And what does logitech do in these cases? I rang up tech support and got hung up on. Or do I need to go to the guy I bought it from?

EDIT: after running 'yes > /dev/null', it might not be totally CPU related, maybe the GPU has something to do with it. In any case, I'll be playing in another account to see if the problem arises there.

OS X :: Unable To Open Mailbox When Receive Heavy Mail

Aug 28, 2009

I have a problem with my mailbox. I have a Macbook and sometimes when I receive a large email, like more than 1 MB, I stop receiving emails. It seems as if my mailbox is blocked.

In the past, when this happened I would log on to my PC at home and it would download all the emails from my mailbox up to the last email I received on my macbook (the large one that caused the block) and then when I open my mail on my macbook again, I can receive emails again.

Unfortunately I don't have a PC at home anymore to use this method to unblock my mailbox. Does anyone have advice how I can unblock my mailbox on my macbook without having to open my mailbox on another computer?

Mac Pro :: 8 Core - Too Much For Heavy Hi-res Graphics - Light Audio Video?

Jul 2, 2010

Is the 8 core overkill for heavy hi-res graphic design, but low use audio and video editing?

I have no experience with the current Mac Pro's. I have a 1,1 original, but I understand that the Nehalem processor is far superior to the Woodcrest from the original.

Question is, with 3300 as the base of an 8 core, does a 2d designer really need that extra processor?

Earlier today, maybe around 3PM, I was using my laptop, and it was charging and it was maybe around 60% battety life when out of no where it just shut off and even the light on my charger went out. When I turned it back on, the fan was running and there was an X over the battery icon. I've tried turning it off and on, and leaving it alone for a few hours, to see if it would resolve the problem but it didn't.  It is currently 9:52PM, I'm still experiencing these problems and I'm using the exact laptop to type this, but I don't know how much battery life is left.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Image Editing Programs - Heavy Memory Usage?

Jun 15, 2012

I am wondering whether the memory use I see is common to the Mac OS X - touted as the graphics pros choice - it's seems anything but to me.  I have a mid 2010 iMac 27" 3.2 GHz Intel Core i312 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (just upgraded in the hope that it would improve the problem - it didn't)ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MBMac OS X Lion 10.7.4  That spec should be more than ample.  No.  Pixelmator uses up to 5GB yes - GB) just opening the app.  If I dare to open an actual image - let's say a 120mb jpg for editing - the memory usage is even higher - usually resulting in the image not opening at all.  GIMP is similar, but not as extreme - opening the file uses around 2GB.  Nevertheless, both of the above seem to me to be examples of excessive memory usage.  Certainly, my machine slows to a crawl when doing anything related to images?

MacBook Air :: Heavy Memory Loss Storage - When Saving PDF Document In Preview

Sep 1, 2014

I am currently editing lots of pdfs and other files for notes. There is one particular big file, ca. 300 MB (part of a book). When I edit this file in Preview (underlining etc.) and save my changes, I loose almost the whole size of the file in disk space.

Saving 10 times, that equals ca. 3 GB. Since I am a diligent "back-upper", I loose ca. 3 GB every 90 minutes. Over the last 3 days, this has consumed more or less 40 GB of my storage space. I have restarted several times and had to delete a lot of files; the sleepimage file is ca. 1 GB big only, so that is not the problem;so I have used "Disk Utility" to localize the massive space use.

Disk utility registers the storage loss in total numbers (35 GB free, next time only 32 GB free), but not within the folders (the single sizes of the folders -Application; Library; User etc-), their sizes stay the same!what happened to my disk space. I need to restore those 40 GB they are being used by something completely useless somewhere.

OS X Yosemite :: MacBook Pro Hangs Randomly When Opening A Graphics Heavy Website In Chrome

Dec 7, 2014

Product Name - MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)
Processor - 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory - 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Serial Number - C02J1192DKQ4
OS - OSX 10.10 .1(Yosemite)

Problem - It happened couple of time, earlier it happened when I was opening "Nordstorm.com" (I know, it was Black Friday time ) and it happened yesterday again, while opening VICE.com. When the problem occurs, machine hangs and after some time I can move cursor, but can't do anything. I have to hard restart the machine. after machine restarts, it shows a popup saying that a graphics problem detected and do you want to report it.

I suggested switching off "graphics switching" from energy menu in system preferences. even that crashed the machine first time when I tried that. So I have graphics switching off for now. Don't know for sure if it is OSX bug, Chrome/Browser bug or something else.

MacBook Air :: Production - Handle Heavy Music Editing With Logic Pro - Lack Of External Port?

I do not own any Mac at home, but looking into one for college. I have read up on all the pros/ cons of the MBA (non-removable battery and RAM, lack of ports and optical drive, etc). I am not a computer gamer, so I stick to the consoles. I was wondering if a MBA is ideal for any kind of music production. Can it handle heavy music editing with GB or Logic Pro? Is it ideal with the somewhat "lack" of external ports? share your opinions and/ or experiences with music production for fun or work on a MBA. (By the way, I am asking this to decide whether I should be looking into a MBA or MBP for college September of 2009, so I have LOTS of time to wait for newer models).

Mac Pro :: Building My Gaming Mac?

Nov 1, 2010

I just finished a project of mine, I decided to build a gaming PC but I wanted it to be a Mac, so I bought a cheap Mac Pro on ebay then added to it over a month or so, I wanted to spend about the same price as a basic Mac Pro from Apple, ?2,000 so here's what I bought

?750:

- Dual 2.66 Ghz Mac Pro 2006 1,1
- 2GB DDR2 FB-DIMM 667mhz RAM
- 250GB HDD
- Superdrive

This is what I've now ended up with after my upgrades:

- 2 x Quad Xeon X5355's @2.66 overclocked to @3.2ghz - 1.313v FSB@1600mhz
- 12GB DDR2 FB-DIMM Kingston RAM @800Mhz
- Sapphire 5870 1GB + XFX 5970 2GB Crossfirex 850/1200
- SATA III 6GB/s + USB 3.0 Asus U3S6
- Bluetooth 2.1 + Airport 802.11n
- 2 x 64GB OCZ Vertex 2E SSD's RAID 0 - Mac OS X 10.6.4
- 60GB Crucial C300 6GB/s - Windows 7 Pro x64
- 1.5TB WD Green - Mac
- 1.0TB WD Green - NTFS
- Liteon Blu-Ray R/W x12
- Apple 1000w PSU
- 5.25" 450 PSU

All together I spent ?2,300 so I went a tiny bit over budget but I did my best not to compromise.

The only other thing I'm thinking of buying is swapping my Asus U3S6 for a dedicated Nvidia Physx card.

Obviously some of my stuff only works in Windows but as I'm not really playing games in OSX that's fine for me.

I'm looking for suggestions to improve my setup so any are welcome. Except those that say "duhhhh haha buy a PC and sell your Mac" because those really are irritating.

So I plan on getting the higher end 21.5 model. However I'm wondering if it's worth it to get 8 gb of ram vs the 4gb standard? Now I don't play a lot of PC games but I would love to run Starcraft 2 close to high-ultra settings as possible. So will that extra 4gb of ram help SC2 run smoother or is that overkill? Also anyone with the new macs yet test out how well SC2 runs on them? Also is it worth it to upgrade to the 3.60GHz Intel Core i5 [Add $180.00]?
