Mac Pro :: Best Graphics Card For Gaming?
Nov 22, 2008What is the best graphics card right now out there for gaming, movie editing, 3d graphics, and will be able to use the next generation HD monitors? preferably under $300. And if there is a better one coming out soon then what?
I have a late 2008 Mac Pro. 3.0 ghz. 4gb memory. and am looking to upgrade my graphics card.
MacBook Pro :: Gaming In OSX Versus Gaming In Windows Boot?
Feb 3, 2010when I get my new MBP (when they release them *sigh*), I intend on doing some moderate gaming on it. Things like MW2, Starcraft, Sims 3, Battlefield BC2, and some others I can't think of right now.
My question is, if a game is available for both OSX and Windows, would it be better to get it for OSX, or Windows? I was wondering if I should have like all my games in the windows partition, or have ones that I can get for OSX separate.

Nov 1, 2010I just finished a project of mine, I decided to build a gaming PC but I wanted it to be a Mac, so I bought a cheap Mac Pro on ebay then added to it over a month or so, I wanted to spend about the same price as a basic Mac Pro from Apple, ?2,000 so here's what I bought

All together I spent ?2,300 so I went a tiny bit over budget but I did my best not to compromise.
The only other thing I'm thinking of buying is swapping my Asus U3S6 for a dedicated Nvidia Physx card.
Obviously some of my stuff only works in Windows but as I'm not really playing games in OSX that's fine for me.
I'm looking for suggestions to improve my setup so any are welcome. Except those that say "duhhhh haha buy a PC and sell your Mac" because those really are irritating.
IMac :: 4GB Of RAM Enough For Gaming?
Jul 28, 2010I'm a long time lurker first time poster and have anxiously been awaiting the new IMac refresh and now that it's here, I just want to make sure I get the proper system for my needs. So I plan on getting the higher end 21.5 model. However I'm wondering if it's worth it to get 8 gb of ram vs the 4gb standard? Now I don't play a lot of PC games but I would love to run Starcraft 2 close to high-ultra settings as possible. So will that extra 4gb of ram help SC2 run smoother or is that overkill? Also anyone with the new macs yet test out how well SC2 runs on them? Also is it worth it to upgrade to the 3.60GHz Intel Core i5 [Add $180.00]?

I have Parallel Desktop 5 but I noticed while playing the Orangebox I was getting some framerate issues.I heard a lot of good things about Crossover games and I was wondering if that would be better? or would bootcamp be just fine? I've been dreaming for ages of the 27" apple display since I went into the apple store (never go innocently to an apple store!).
However, this is a substantial investment, especially when I know that I will have to buy a 2560 adaptor as I use a PC with no displayport (GTX480).
I was wondering if a 24" wouldn't be better for my use.
I am mostly playing RTS or some FPS like L4D, screen on a desk and chair just in front (so I would say 50cm from the screen). I don't need to use the 27" as TV as the 50" plasma does nicely the job.So, for such startegy games where every bit of the screen counts, wouldn't that make it too big?Plus:
Did the 24" already dropped in price or a drop is expected at the release of the 27"?
And finally:
Do you think I am nuts to want to replace my 24" PVA FP241W BenQ (screen so gorgeous BUT not glossy and cheap grey plastic all around) with an apple display?

Oct 4, 2010 I use it for my university study and I play games occasionally (usually World of Warcraft). I'am wondering the difference of WoW performance between 15" i5 2.4GHz and i7.
I play WoW via Parallel Desktop on Windows 7. I know there's Mac version WoW, but I just want to know the performance of running WoW via parallels desktop. A big drop of FPS? or 4GB RAM insufficient?

Dec 9, 2010So i have been using macbooks and macbook pros for a long time but i am looking at getting a 27" imac for the desk so i can use my macbook pro for mobile tasks. At the moment macbook pro stays plugged in and i take my macbook everywhere...... Another side task being i wouldn't mind getting back into a bit of gaming CSS and Guildwars (run though crossover) as i have heard good reviews about it working well, i do miss GW..... anyway i have been looking at the refurb store and i am rather tempted but i can't seem to work out what would be a better trade off, only 512 of gfx ram with a i7 or 1Gb with a i5 now obviously for the gaming side the i5 is the better option but i kinda want the i7 can anyone advise what they picked for playing games ?

For owners who game, is the ACD's 14-second response time a problem? Is there a lot of noticeable ghosting? I play mostly fps's (CS:S, Day of Defeat, CoD, etc...) so this is a big issue for me. I'm dead set on the LED ACD so this is the only potential issue that's might hold me back

Reading this forum and googling, I knocked VISTA out of the equation,, but since 7 is almost as nippy as XP, I am not sure.

when i play dragon age in boot camp with windows 7 it gets insanely hot (200 f sometimes) and the game eventually quits. this is really annoying cause it is such a great game. i even tried it on the lowest possible visuals and this still happens. also when the machine is just sitting and i am not running anything at all it still heats up and stays hot. this does not happen in os x just in windows 7.
when i had vista on boot camp i used to play some very graphic intense games on much higher visuals such as mass effect and fallout 3 and had no problems. it got hot but never unbearable to the point that the game quit.

May 16, 2010Has anybody compared gaming under Win7 32 vs 64. Im not that thrilled with the performance on Battlefield 2, but am currently running win 32. I wonder if 64 and its ability to use more RAM will help with gaming experience. Also, I've seen many threads on trying to update the Nvidia drivers, but not many responses on whether it helped much, considering what had to be done just to get the drivers updated....is it worth it.
I wish Apple would address the outdated drivers.

Mar 2, 2012I simply can't take any of my pictures off of my SD card. I've tried using the USB cable that came with the camera itself, as well as a USB card reader. iPhoto, and the laptop itself does not recognize the card, or that there is any device mounted at all. I've also tried checking "External Disks" in Finder Preferences, didn't seem to work.

Sep 9, 2010With some advice from this forum I've now setup vista on a bootcamp partition and have pointed parallels at this installation which all works well. When I boot into vista I have the proper Radeon driver installed and can play games fine on max settings at the highest resolution, however if I try to run a windows game from Parallels in OSX it defaults to the Parallels video driver and 640x480 resolution. Is there any way of running games at full screen/full settings from osx or will I have to reboot into windows each time?

Is it worth converting my 2 x Dual Xeon 5150 Woodcrest 2.66Ghz Mac Pro into a windows only gaming PC? Which is the best graphics card I can get for it that will work off the shelf? I don't need to go back into mac so it doesn't have to work in mac mode. Or would I be better off selling it and getting a windows PC purely for gaming? I'd rather not go through that hassle to be honest as I'm sure the Mac Pro should be able to work well with a decent graphics card?

Nov 23, 2010My wife has a MBP 2.4ghz core i5. She has Sims 3 and all the expansion packs. She uses the architectural features to build towns and houses,etc. Well it makes a steady fan noise after a while(she plays for a few hours straight). I checked the istat widget and its at 5998 rpm and 164 F with a noticeable fan noise. Not as loud as windows laptops that I can remember but loud enough to notice. Is this normal? The machine is only 2 months old. It works great and only does this when she plays Sims3(the only gaming we do on it).
